I just wanted to warn people who bid/buy/sell on ebay. I'm not sure who exactly this includes or how this happened but here's what happened. I bid on an auction yesterday. I was outbid and lost the auction. There were 3 other people who bid higher than me. Here's the email I received.....
Hi (name deleted),I am the seller of the Stampin Up 22 Rubber Stamp Sets Cat Herbs Bug Flower - item # 170193929630, and I've just been contacted by the eBay staff who informed me that the winner of this item got rejected due to security reasons (either failed to follow through on the purchase commitment or outright refused to do so). Your last auctioned bid of US $101.00 prior to being outbided is taken into consideration as eBay policy automatically proclaims you to be the winner by default. Nevertheless,I need your agreement on this so I may contact eBay to confirm your winning position otherwise I'll relist the item. If you're interested please confirm by forwarding this message to e-mail and include your name, address and ebay ID. Thank you
This is the interesting part.....the email addy it was sent to is NOT registered with ebay. I've already forwarded it to the spoof section of ebay. I just wanted to let everyone know about this. If you get one please contact live help on ebay and they'll tell you what to do. I don't want to post the spoof addy here. Just watch your accounts!!!! The best way to find out if it's real is to check your ebay messages. If there is nothing there about a second chance offer or something to that extent, report it!
It's a shame that there are people that sit around and send out emails like that to others.. they should get a life, rather then trying to wreck others.

You also need to be careful opening emails that say they are from Ebay in your regular email. It is best to delete these and go to My Ebay and view the messages there.
There are bad emails that try to get you to open them by saying ebay in the header but once you open it, nasties can get into your computer for the scammers to try to get your personal info.
I've gotten similar e-mails on Ebay even when I wasn't bidding. I guess they hope you will click the link just to find out what is going on. I get the spammer e-mails from "Paypal" all the time. I've just stopped clicking links for anything. I always just go to the website for everything!!

The thing I found out yesterday is that if it is a legitimate EBay message, it will also be in your My EBay message folder.
Earlier this week, I received 2 "second chance" type emails on a plasma tv that I never bid on, so I deleted them. Yesterday, I received an email that was my invoice for the tv. It looked like a real EBay message as it had all the logos and graphics. But, it was not addressed to my EBay ID (as legitmate messages will be), and when I clicked the link to the "auction," it showed the winning bidder as the first part of my email address which is not my EBay ID.
I contacted EBay security & sent them a copy of the email. They told me not to do anything as it was not legitimate.
You have to be very careful; these scammers have a lot of tricks up their sleeves.
Robin is RIGHT! I had this happpen to me a while back with EBay and my Pay Pal account. These emails are sent by phishing sites who are basically trying to get your information. Both recommended that you forward the emails to them so that they can disable them and protect all users. YOU ARE NOT TO CLICK ON ANY OF THESE LINKS & ENTER YOUR USER ID OR PASSWORD!!! They also indicated that the best thing to do is open up the browser and go to their page and log in there. Legitimate EBay and Pay Pal messages/notices will appear there. Also, they will always email you with your name in the email.
BUT TO BE THE SAFEST.....JUST OPEN YOUR BROWSER AND YOU TYPE IN THE WEB ADDRESS AND LOG IN.
You just can't be to careful these days! It's a shame!

I have had weird things happening lately from bay and Paypal. I received one email in my AOL account that asked whenthe laptop computer this person bid on and won will be shipped...AOL said it was from a phishing website and disabled the email...the second was from Paypal that they deducted $700.00 for an item I never even bid on...AOL disabled that one also...Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
One other thing you need to watch for on Ebay are the "Bidding Wars". A person will put something out for auction and hope there is someone who wants it really bad. They have someone else (there friend or partner) who has no intention or even wants it keep bidding so you will too, this is the way they get the item up to a high dollar amount. If you quit bidding, and their friend is stuck with it, they just don't pay for it and re-list it under a different name. If you do win it, then they both split the high dollar amount. So have a price in mind that you know you won't go over and stick to it - don't play a high dollar war.
I'm a regular seller on eBay and I get those spam emails all the time. They go in cycles. I send every spam email to spoof at ebay dot com or spoof at paypal dot com and eventually they stop for awhile, then they start back up. Sometimes the messages are obvious spoofs because the address will be from paypal and the message is about eBay or there are misspellings. Some however, are very clever and I almost got caught once. The message was an ask seller a question email, I typed in my password but I think my firewall program saved me. After that with my heart pounding in my chest, I changed my ebay password twice, just to be sure. Everything turned out okay. Moral of that story is if it's not in My Messages then don't answer it.
Bidding wars can be real between two bidders who really want an item. I had two guys bid up a pair of amber cuff links to $97.00 from $50.00 but Cindygrammy2 is right about what is called "shill bidding", it's illegal on eBay but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Like she said, stick to your maximum bid.

It makes me sad that people can't even participate in ebay anymore without the worry of being taken advantage of. The fee increases (which were touted as decreases) have sealed the deal.

I agree....I'm finished with Ebay also. I especially liked how ebay is announcing that they are lowering insertion fees and 'adjusting' final value fees. Ebay certainly didn't go out of it's way to make sure that everyone understood that the 'adjustment' was an increase, which they will still make a larger profit on.
I LOVED it when I read how ebay does that with the messages actually on their site if they send you an email. I wish paypal would get the same thing b/c I get so much phishing stuff from paypal...at least I was smart enough to try and click some nonfunctioning tabs and realize it was a hoax!
Sorry to say those spoof emails go out all the time and it is not ebays fault. So in concern it is not an ebay warning but more like a SPAM warning. When you sign up for ebay they cleary state to only respond to official ebay mail that is in your message box on ebay.
Needless to say I love ebay I have NEVER had a bad transaction... I sell many of my stamp sets on there for well over $20 when people on SCS wont even pay $5... soooooooooooo gotta make the money!
I had ebayers email me and ask me if I want to buy a similar item I was outbid for. The biggest problem is the email is usually from overseas and the grammar and spelling is really bad. The items are always expensive items. I don't know if its a scam or not, but it's too scary for me to try it. I just stay away!
Yes everyone-be very careful with ebay! Not that I'm saying don't use it, just be careful! I hadn't logged into ebay for months last year, and I got an email saying that my ebay email and password had been changed. Turns out a scammer had hacked into my account and listed a bunch of high priced items for sale-GPS systems, guitars, furniture, etc. So he had it to where the money would go to him when the auction ended, then I would be stuck with the thousands of dollars in refunds that would need to be issued. Luckily I got it all straightened out in time before anything bad happened!
Also a few weeks ago, my husband listed a vehicle on ebay. The auction was getting ready to end within the next day, and the price was getting up there where we wanted it to be, when someone used the Buy It Now. Our auction had stated US bidders only, no bidders allowed with 0 feedback, and the deposit had to be made immediately after winning. Of course the bidder was 0 for 3! We had another hacker situation. Turns out he created his account 2 days before and had used Buy It Now to purchase 14 other cars and about 20 pieces of really high end, expensive furniture! What is the point of that I wonder? Just to ruin a bunch of sellers' days?
Anyways, just be careful. And there are always other places to sell things if you don't like ebay. For example, my area has a freecycle board where you can give and get things for free. And from this website I found quite a few area boards where you can sell/trade things as well! I've sold lots of things and gotten just as much money as I would on ebay-plus I didn't have to pay listing fees, paypal fees, or deal with shipping! Well, if you read all of that, pat yourself on the back. Sorry for writing so much!
Another scam to be careful of not only on eBay but with even those local "penny saver" sites is the one where the buyer sends you a "cashiers check" or "money order" for several hundred dollars over the amount that you want for the item you are selling. They want you to "keep X amount of money for yourself and send the rest to Nigeria, Romania" or where ever.
I know you've all heard of that scam but what surprised me was that it was a local Penny Saver newspaper that my sister-in-law in Los Angeles put a set of 4 tires up for sale and someone from Canada wanted to buy them and sent her a cashiers check for more than the price of the tires. She cashed the cashier's check at the bank but before she sent the money she asked me about it and decided not to send the money. Eventually the bank would have realized that the cashier's check was a fake and gone to my sister-in-law for the money. I think she went to the bank and got it all straightened out but at least she wasn't out the money or the tires because she hadn't sent either.
It's scary all of the scams and fraud going on not only on the internet but in regular life. Just remember the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".

I've had similar experiences...always send to the spoof department if you are unsure, and always go into ebay to see if the emails are "real."
OHHHH!! I wish these scammers would put their skills to good use and intercept real computer scams like porn rings or terrorist plots!!! :mad: Why can't they leave innocent people alone to do their happy bidding and shopping? DH got a message a while ago saying he won on a second chance bid, send $1000 to blah blah blah. These people make me so mad!!
That is just crazy. My mom almost fell for something like that not too long ago but I had to tell her to go to ebay and look at her MY EBAY. I wish I had forwarded it on to Ebay.
Never mind I won anitem just 2 weeks ago on ebay. I paid the person thru paypal. It was supposed to be delived in 3 days since it was a priority shipping. Well a week later I never got the item so I contacted the person. she said that yes I should of gotten the item she sent it out the following day.
So I emailed her back and asked her for the shippping numbers. Well she never replied with them so I emailed her again. still never got them. she just claimed she mailed it out.
So I left a negative remark saying I never got the item. she was t'd off and left me a negative mark. She said I should of waited 2 weeks. Well I complained to ebay.and they told meshe should of refinded my money. So I emailed her bacl and told her what they said and she said no way because I already damaged her ratings by leaving a negative remark.
I told her I did what anyone would do if they paid for an item and didn't recieve it. She said noone would of left a negative remark. they would of waiting 2 weeks.
The thing is why couldn't she have just given me a answer to my question about the shipping numbers.she never responded to my question.

I got burned really bad over a beanie baby years ago, and learned the hard way, so I try to warn people.

I heard a DJ on a local radio station admit last week that he got kicked off eBay a few years ago because he had a "bunch" of accounts and he would bid on his own stuff just to drive the price up! Well, he was "found out" and has been banned from eBay!
And Lisa62, I think you were absolutely in the right! The "feedback" portion of eBay leaves something to be desired...it can be useful but can also become a source of "payback". I bought an outfit for one of my niece's dolls last year and was charged for Priority shipping ($4.60). The outfit came in a padded envelope that had been mailed for less than a dollar...I posted a neutral (not even negative!) comment and said that I didn't feel the shipping was reasonable and the seller turned around and left a snotty negative feedback for me. I could have fought it but it was the only negative feedback I'd ever received so I just let it slide.
Well come May 1st eBay is going to take the ability to leave neutral or negative feedback from sellers for just that reason. I don't think it's fair but I agree that the retaliatory feedback issue is a problem. I think that this will open sellers up to all kinds of feedback extortion and other problems.
In your example above, if you had paid for Priority shipping and I had accidentally sent your item First Class, I would hope that you would have given me the chance to correct the error before leaving a negative. That is why a lot of sellers leave retaliatory negatives, because the buyer doesn't communicate their dissatisfaction. In this case I would have apologized and refunded the difference or maybe the whole amount.
My one and only negative was from a woman who neg'd me because the US postal service lost her package. Did she email me and tell me about it? Noooo, she just left a negative feedback. That first one hurts the most. If she had emailed me I would have replaced her item right away. But for the failure to communicate with me she earned herself a matching negative feedback.
My solution would be for the buyer or seller to go through an eBay communication program much like the unpaid item/item not received process where they would have to communicate with the other party before leaving a neutral or negative. If the issue isn't solved to their liking then they can leave the bad feedback. It's sad that bad sellers on eBay have forced eBay to implement a policy where sellers cannot leave negative feedback and to make it necessary to have a forced good customer service policy. Everyone is afraid that the other person is ripping them off.
eBay has made alot of other changes that might hopefully get rid of some of the bad sellers. We will see.
