It makes sense people are using paypal to buy their characters on world of warcraft. They are usually computer savvy people. My kids call that game, "the world of war crack" hmmmm i think it fits.
One thing about letters you get from "PayPal" ... if you are not sure, where the link is highlighted that they want you to click on, use your mouse to hold the arrow over the highlighted area, if the link that is typed in the letter is different than the address that shows up at the bottom of your browser, you know for sure it's a fake.
I know, also, that a few of the websites I buy from that use PayPal as an option, you can enter your CC info etc without actually having a PayPal account. The screen that pops up is a PayPal screen and you have the option to fill in the left side of the page without having an account with PayPal OR you can log in to your PayPal account on the right side of the page as normal.
Not sure if all internet stores come up that way, but the ones I deal with do.
sorry to read all these postings. i was also scammed to the tune of $1000.00.
it has been settled, so says PayPal, but i have yet to see my money.. that 5 to 7 business day thing. funny how they can take it out in a millesecond, but can't put it back.. i will cancel as sooooooon as they give it back to me. This is the second time..should have learned from the first..
awful stories here. i've had a paypal account for many years and have never had a problem. i'm VERY careful about my password however, and NEVER click links in messages that appear to have come from ebay or paypal. you gotta be careful these days.
Unfortunately many ebay sellers only take Paypal and many online stores only take Paypal. I signed up for Paypal security, 5.00 isn't too much to protect my account.
What really frustrates me, though, is they already charge us so many fees (via ebay and Paypal), why should we have to pay any amount for an extra security code? If they are easily compromised, it is their responsibility to make the site more secure. Provide the extra security code at no cost and keep the customers they have now, instead of losing so many due to their negligence.
Just my $.02 worth (wish that was all Paypal charged  ).
After reading all the discussion so far, I want to tell you what my husband told me a long time ago. Any time you make a transaction on line (check your bank account, purchase something with your charge card, access Paypal, etc.) be sure to log and out and then totally close your browser. Just logging out is not enough. Jim said there is a back door left open when your browser is not closed, so that may be how some people are accessing your information. If they watch Paypal activity and can find a way in, they will do so.
This happened to me over three weeks ago, and I still don't have access to any of my funds. The scammers attempted to withdrawl over $3500 from two different accounts. Paypal caught one $900 withdrawl and it was credited the same day that it actually debited, but two other Echecks hit my account 5 days later totaling over $1700. Paypal told me to call my bank and have them take care of it. I did that and it's made a huge mess that still isn't fixed. My bank finally put the money back, and adjusted the overdraft fees, but Paypal still shows a large balance available, which isn't actually mine. I've never been so frustrated in my life. I know that Paypal caught the fraud as soon as it happened, but fixing it is a slow and tedious process that I'm not coping with well.
Is it a bit safer if you only keep a credit card on file with Paypal
instead of your bank account?
I think so. I was scammed last month out of $6000 between my bank account and credit card. The credit card company took care of it, and while I wasn't able to use that card anymore, they sent me a new card with a new account number within two weeks. My bank account was frozen for over a month. That means the money I had in there before this mess was inaccessible. Luckily it wasn't much! If I had a lot of money in my account it would have made paying bills a nightmare. I just opened a new bank account.
A few months ago I got several emails that were supposed to be from ebay saying that someone was trying to access my account and some different ones too. I looked close at the address and it had paypal spelled with 2 ll's or something to look like paypal. I just checked my account and nothing different had happened. I think sometimes hackers send paypal customers these fake emails just to try and get important info. You need to really watch out when you do receive an email that it is from the real paypal.
I got an email like that a few years ago and clicked on the link. A box popped up asking to verify my checking account and routing number. HUGE red flag...
awful stories here. i've had a paypal account for many years and have never had a problem. i'm VERY careful about my password however, and NEVER click links in messages that appear to have come from ebay or paypal. you gotta be careful these days.
My experience is the same, I've had my account for years and no problems (yet). I've been very careful and so far it's worked. I get TONs of emails from fake paypal & ebay senders but forward them to the real paypal & ebay to track. I NEVER ever click anything that comes from "paypal" or "ebay" except when I've made a purchase or sent money and am expecting to hear from them. Hmmmm it's probably time to change my password again. I use a combination of numbers and letters in a random sequence which is harder to break. Using symbols is even more difficult but I don't know if those sites allow symbols - time to find out tho
I also was a victim of fraud via PP but they heard my mouth as hey took more then 800 from me and it was A NIGHTMARE. I did get all my money back but I did get that security button they sell you. Its only 5 bucks and I feel a bit better about using PP.
Be sure to put in disputes in the resolution center of paypal so the investigations can begin. Don't depend on calling them in - you will be on hold forever and I don't think they have a toll free number (that I could find anyway) Go into your account and do it right away - And change your password and security questions immediately! Make the Paypal password something that isn't used on any other account or site access you may have.
I have a 'minor' dispute on my credit/debit/ATM card for my PayPal account. I went in to do a resolution and I filled out an on-line form with all my info and then it stated that I needed to print it out and MAIL it in... WTH??? All of my info is printed out... name, number, addy, email, AND credit card number... and they want me to send it through the mail??? Do they think I am crazy??? I can't get ahold of a real live person... and I have emailed my concerns... guess I'll wait... and wait some more!
I am not against Paypal... I monitor my account VERY carefully and I use it for business purposes... I'm not scared away... just disgruntled with the service!

Wow dh kept telling me to cancel and finally did. Thanks ladies this is important information. I also think that everyone puts so much personal information out there on blogs that it 'helps' the criminals
Quick update on my situation... I ended up calling (only took about 20 minutes) and they were VERY nice and helped out quickly and efficiently. My card is cancelled and I have a fax number to send the info to...
For anyone else with issues... call the toll free number...they were great!

This happened to us also...a few years ago. Paypal called us and asked if we had been using our account, the day before. We were told that $500.00 had been deducted from our bank account the night before. We were able to go to the Credit union and work with them and paypal to stop the $500.00 from being withdrawn. It was a bad scare for us and we closed the account and will not have paypal any longer. It doesn't matter how smart the business is, there is always scammer's out there who are more clever. Ugg!

happened to me too....right after july 4th. I was on vacation and did not even know....until I came home a week later and had e mails thankong me or payment and then asking why I with drew payment. 6000$. PP caught it with in a few hours and started to rectify it before I even called. They sent me that $5.00 security thingy for free....probably because I was not a happy stamper I did get all the money back but I really an afraid of paypal.
OMG!!!!!! This just happened to me last night!!!! SAME THING ~ involving World of Warcraft. I got several nasty emails from someone last night after I disputed the charges (she said my "son" had ripped off her son for the game), and then she woke up our whole family at 6:45 am this morning screaming and threatening me over this. I'm SOOOO glad I saw this thread.
I just got, and started using, my security key. With cyber crime being *the next big thing* it makes sense to protect yourself, which to me means making sure I am accessing funds (or paying for transactions) from as few sources as possible, and making sure that source has a huge and active security team that will work to resolve any issues that occur, which in my mind is PayPal. It's like anything else in life, there's risk involved. But I feel far more confident with PayPal than my credit union when it comes to online security. But boy does it stink that thieves are growing more clever and finding new ways to rip us off without ever leaving home!
Some might laugh at me, but when I read about all this scamming with paypal last week on here, I ordered the security code and it came in the mail shortly thereafter, but what I decided to do before any of my acct/s got scammed I just closed my checking acct and then opened a new one and have decided to NOT use paypal again. I don't have the greatest luck anyways and this would just be asking for it in my book. lol
My husband and I were victims last year of the ebay/paypal hacking scam. Now we've been members of ebay and paypal for many years and never had a problem.
I have to say that everyone saying you have to be careful what you click on, never click on suspicious links, etc is kind of frustrating to hear. Neither one of us EVER clicked on any links from paypal or ebay. We ALWAYS typed in the full address and was extremely careful with our passwords, etc. We both felt like we were fairly savvy computer/internet users. I too used to tell folks how careful they must be and when I heard of others getting scammed I secretly thought to myself...well they HAD to have clicked on something or did something stupid to allow themselves to be hacked. It could never happen to me...Well....
Let me tell you. It happened to us. The one "stupid" thing we did was have our ebay & paypal use the same password...convienent for us AND the unscrupulous hackers. Apparently a fictitious auction was created on ebay and our account was used to bid on this outrageously over priced item. So "our account" won the "buy it now" auction. Because we had naively used the same password and userid they were able to hack both the ebay account AND the paypal account.
We kept very little money in our paypal account (a precaution we thought made sense) but that was of no matter because our paypal account was connected to our bank account for verification purposes. So they were able to put any amount they wanted and when our bank account was depleted the overdraft protection kicked in so they had free reign pretty much...needless to say we were devastated.
I immediately got on the phone to paypal, ebay and our bank. I must say PayPal and Ebay both were on the ball and had already pulled the fictitious auction because a couple of other accounts had been used in the same matter during the last 24 hour period. They were already investigating by the time I found out about it. Our bank (Chase) was less than helpful and basically said we'd have to take up the matter with Paypal & Ebay, nothing they could do, etc. Ugh!
I was fairly hysterical during all this because all I could think of was how we were going to make the house payment, the car payment, utilities, food, etc....we were penniless!
As I said Ebay and Paypal were extremely helpful. I believe it took about a week and half maybe two weeks to get everything restored and we were made whole again. We were able to get every penny back thankfully! And though reluctantly Chase reimbursed the overdraft fees.
It was a tough time! I think my nerves were shot by the time it was over.
Of course then we changed all of our passwords and unlinked our bank account from paypal, etc.
It was a horrible experience but I don't blame paypal or ebay. I blame the idiots out there that ruin a good thing for others. I think of it like burglars who break into homes and steal. Same thing really. You can do everything right...have a security system in place, keep the doors locked, and place outdoor lighting in dark areas, etc. You do all the right things and yet still if someone wants to bad enough they will break in. I guess it is like my daddy always said...locks only keep out honest folks.
Dont know if this mini novel helps anyone but I thought I'd share my story just in case.

Hi everyone...I was shocked to have come across this post just by accident...I am in the middle of this as we speak...I have been on the phone and at the bank every morning this week...I was scammed for almost $2,000.00 and that doesn't include the bank fees...I won't go into the entire story now...I have some of it on my
blog...isastampingoodtime.blogspot.com.
It's a mess...The bank had to close my account this morning when they attempted to jack into it again last night...the bank has now bought in the fraud department because this person was able to get the cash...all my cheques bounced...and my scheduled payments were all declined...the bank has reopened a new account for me which I will be able to use within 24hours...but the trouble I will have to go through changing...repaying and explaining to everyone will be a pain...when I got home from the bank after 2 hours this morning I cancelled the cards that are associated with the paypal account...after this is over I will be closing the account with paypal also...I can't do it now because they won't let me since it's an active investigation...it has been an awful week for me.
I didn't know that others were involved in this scam also...good luck to all of you...I hope we all get our money back and this "A...Hole" is caught quickly.
I've been hacked big time - and threatened TWICE! by a person who claimed he was 'coming to get me' if I didn't reverse it.
Here are some steps which I took which might help someone:
FIRST: When you first realize you have been hacked, IMMEDIATELY go on to your PP account and flag the transactions as unauthorized!! Once you have done that CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD!!! I don't use my now-disbanded PP account often, so it was obvious when it happened.
Second: Go to one of the three main credit rating agencies and report to ONE of them that FRAUD has been committed. If you don't know which one to report to, you only need to report to one. The BIG three are TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. You only need to report a fraud claim to one of them, and they will relay your information to the other two, so you don't have to repeat the info three times. You can Google any one of them to make your claim.
Third: Report your FRAUD to your local police department. Bring names, email addresses.. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING with you. The person who takes down your information knows NOTHING about what's going on, so the more ammo you can give her/him the better. The Officer that took my initial report marked it as fraud and when I called to find out the Detective who was assigned to my case said it was unsolvable. Granted, it was, and I wasn't so much worried about the $$$, but when that person called AGAIN I was LIVID to say the least!
Fourth: Go to your bank where your account that PP has and notify them - IN PERSON - about the transactions that have been going on. Your personal account HAS NOT BEEN HACKED! HOWEVER, if I didn't go to my bank the next day and explained what was going on, they probably wouldn't have stopped the transaction. You MUST notify your bank(s) what's going on. Be diligent in your life! That is KEY to making sure you get all of your $$ back and everything settled down.
So after everything has been said and done, PP did reimburse me and retracted all exchanges. But with the numerous phone calls I made to the PP people, and when I told them I had been threatened with physical harm the only response was, "I'm sorry". I've closed my PP account (yes, it was verified and yes it was to it's own little verified account). And just like the majority of you have done, I've gone back into beginner mode and changed EVERYTHING!
Remember this: If you don't report it to the police, they don't know that it happened. If you don't let everyone know what happened, no one can claim that it DID happen. Do you really want to be a victim of someone who doesn't even know you, know how wonderful you are? ;)
'Nuff said but I hopes this helps!
P.S. - Fraud is a crime, and unless we keep reporting it nothing will change. And if State/International boundries are crossed, then the FBI get involved. Don't be intimidated!
Ugg...I just opened a pp account again after not having one for several years. I have made a few evilbay purchases, some etsy purchases, and I was hopeful to sell a few things on both ebay and etsy which basically means I HAVE to have paypal. However, I have refused to link my debit to it. I am thinking of doing the prepaid cc thing too and trying to get this cc off of anything linked online.
Hmm...I am going to have to really seriously rethink how I pay for things. Seems like everything needs its own account these days. I did at least put a really crazy password in for my account that is not remotely similar to my screen name and I do know not to click on links and THEN give info.
So, after reading this thread I tried to go and cancel my account and it indicates that I can't do it since there is a pending bank transaction. I know for certain there isn't one, so I have emailed paypal to see what is going on. I don't see any pending transactions in 'activity' so hopefully it is just a glitch. This is way too scary - I feel so bad for those who have been affected! Thanks for sharing your stories.
I've had a PP account for several years with no problems. I got it only to purchase on Ebay. I've been thinking of selling on EB, but what would be the best way to collect funds if I don't use PP? If I accept only check or MO, will that deter people from buying from me?
Every( EVERY) single one of my ebay trannies is P/P- and we just got an update letter from e-bay on new procedures: they will not be allowing mo's or checks any more-only cc and p/p I guess so merchants don't have to wait forever to get paid. But I plan on getting a second checking acct for p/p only-we should not have to do this as big as pay-pal/ebay are they should be frontrunners in advances security systems-and not charge extra-since they charge large fees to the merchants already. We would be devistated financially if we lost even $200 for the length of time it takes p/p to "investigate" etc. Ummmmm, let's see a csvc rep plays these same games- sounds fishy(not phishy) to me-and she gets your info all day. Kinda like the waiter with your cc. I have had a pp acct for many, many years(I, too got $5 for opening it ;) ) Never had a problem personally-everything they send you has in block letters never give out info over the computer. Always sppedy with questions. I report any phishing I get from them and e-bay-tho none in quite a while-guess they figure there is bigger fish to fry. I would love to know how the phishers know when an account has been used after a long time not using it-that sounds like something internal. If you have auctions on e-bay there really isn't much option but to use p/p-as it is what most people use. I remember the days when you had to wait a week to get a check, then wait a week + for it to clear(constantly checking on it) and I sooooooo prefer p/p.

When I order anything online, I use my Discover card. Discover has a feature where you can generate a random one-time use card number that is linked to your account. You use the random generated number and the seller never sees your real account number. I use it when I pay with Paypal too. It's a little extra work, because Paypal remembers the last CC number I used, so I have to remove that number and generate the new one. But at least I know that if someone does get to my Paypal account, it won't go against my credit card.

sheeeesh!
I found this thread and while I have never had any problems with my account, I did remove our primary banking account from pp and ordered the security key. I so use pp enough that the preventative $5 is worth it!!!
One thing you should know about paypal is that if they send you an email, it will be addressed to Dear (your name) not Dear Paypal member. so if you get an email, not addressed to your name, it is someone pfishing and as soon as you click on the link to verify your info, they got ya!!! so do not open the link and forward it to the paypal phishing email.
Can someone help me understand the Paypal scamming. When I purchase an item, I use my own Visa credit card. A few weeks ago, I get a message that said I had to verify my account and I had to give paypal my checking account information. Which I did and the 2 deposits that paypal said that they would deposit into my account went in. Now when I purchase something I have the choice of my checking account or my own Visa credit card. Is the scamming coming from our personal accounts? Doesn't paypal have their own personal credit that you can apply for? It that where the scamming is comming from? Please help me understand. Thanks!

Add me to the list of PayPal victims. My account got hacked into and $1130 was stolen. I'm making a very long story short here but PayPal took out the money, then tried a second time to take out the money, for which my bank denied it because I had reported it like I should. Now PayPal claims they never got the money. I am so totally frustrated and exhausted from fighting with the stupidity I can't even type the whole story for you here...but part of the story is on my blog if you care to hear my story, though with what's on this thread do you really need another story...though I got some rogue PayPal lovin comments on my blog that made for some fun dialog. I can't wait til this is over so I can cancel my account.
Good luck and {{{HUGS}}} to all those going through the same thing, all those who will go through the same thing (cause PayPal doesn't seem to be learning from their mistakes) and high five to those who have RUN to cancel their accounts before they get ripped off.
