It is quite normal I think,in a lot of cases for 12 x 12 not to really be 12 x 12. I think the reasoning is so that you can get the page with lots of embellishments and photos into a 12 x 12 page holder. So I think they make them 1/4" smaller all around so it fits in the page holder.
Well the 8 1/2 X 11 card stock is actually that size. It is frustrating to me. If it says 12 X12 then it should be that size, otherwise label it as the size that it really is.
Am I alone on this?
I like it a tad smaller. I scrap 12 x 12, and it drives me nuts when I finish a page and try to slip it into a protector and it's too fat from embellishments and won't go in. Then you are trying to trim it down without smashing or cutting anything off!
A lot of scrapbook papers are this way!

It's not just SU, it's typical with a lot of scrapbook paper. I think overall scrappers choose to have it slightly smaller, and it's labeled 12x12 because it's made to go in a 12x12 page protector. But there are some papers that are exactly 12 x12 so you just have to watch each piece. It's the same way with rugs, you buy a 5x7 rug thinking it's 5x7, but in that industry they also are usually smaller than what they advertise. Go figure. It makes sense to someone somewhere!

I believe you can cut your pieces into 5 15/16 and get your 4-6's by 6's. It has been awhile since I did it, so sorry I can't exactly remember. I do understand the frusturation since not all of us scrap. There are a few other companies that also do them a little smaller in order to get them in page protectors.
I trim my 12 x 12 SU paper to make 6 x 6 pages I trim it at 5 and a hair more than 15/16 inches. Not really a big difference in my opinion, and that way they actually fit in the page protectors without needing a shoe horn.
Obviously not with SU but some brands will actually state "true 12X12" on them. I agree that if it's 11 7/8 x 11 7/8 it should state so rather than misleading you.
I've never had a prob. w/ it. I like that it's slightly smaller since when it's loaded up w/ pics and embellishments it's WAY easier to slip into the page protectors (that's why it's an 8th of an inch off).
I don't think it's that big of a deal. When cutting it down I just measure right before the 6 inch line on my cutter and I'm good to go (when I used to use EXACT 6" measurements I found my pages wouldn't fit in the pg protectors and I had to shave edges off to get them to fit - NOT fun :()
I'm not scraping my 6 X 6 pieces, I'm using them for boxes so I want 6 X 6.
Plus I was frustrated cuz I just assumed the pages were 12 X 12 and I cut 3 pages before realizing that I was not getting 6 X 6 pieces.
What did I learn? Don't assume! Now I have a bunch of red cardstock pieces that are not very usable for what I intended. I'll have to think of lots of cards with red CS accents!

that's too bad. Your demo should have told you about thesizing (they explain it in our product manual). Too late now though!! At least w/ V-day coming up you can use up a lot of those red pieces!!
The same thing happened to me!! I wanted to make a couple of accordian type books, and thought I could just cut each piece into 4 x 12, and score every 3 inches. Uhm, NO, I could not!!! Actually I did, and then when I scored them, they were totally wonky!
So lessoned learned for me, I guess. Makes total sense though, that they aren't completely 12 x 12, so that they can fit into a page protector. Just disappointing to us box-book-tag makers who want an exact measure for scoring.
Enjoy your Red cardstock, I have a bunch of Certainly Celery (12 x 12) to use up too!!
I run into this with all different kinds of paper. When I cut something in 1/2 and then fold each piece in 1/2, I want the edges/corners to meet up exactly but they rarely do.
I have had this trouble with the SU 8 1/2 X 11 cardstock as well, I have cut their paper in 1/2 with several different cutters and still can't get it right. A friend and I measured them and we were right they were off!
It's the same in the lumberyard a 2 X 4 is really 1 3/4 X 3 3/4. I never could figure that out.

The difference is that every lumber yard you go to sells 2 X 4's that are really 1 3/4 X 3 3/4. No surprises. SU! is the only cardstock I have used that is not the correct size.

Well I guess I understand that problem about getting in in the page protector. That makes complete sense.
I'm just saying don't say something is a certian size if it really is not. If it is really 11 3/4 X 11 3/4's then that is way way it should be sold.
I bought 12 X 12 becasue I thought I would get 4, 6 x 6 pieces of cardstock and that did not happen.
I totally agree with you. It took me a while buying scrapbooking supplies to figure this out. I have noticed that some products are advertised as "true 12x12", so I guess you have to look for that. I had kind of assumed that SU's was true, and was considering buying some for my DD who likes to make 6x6 albums. You have shown me the light! Live and learn.
