Cool African American Stampers

Hello fellow scrappers!!! Just wondering if there are any African American Scrapbookers or Stampers here on SCS. It is very rare that I run into any... I am the only one in my cropping group...:p

:( Sorry, I don't qualify, but that's an interesting question. I have one friend who is "crafty" but with 4 young kids she's too busy to be on SCS. ;) There's no one around you that comes to stamp camps or anything?
Good luck!

Not sure if Brownee is still around here or not. She was a moderator, but I haven't seen any posts from her for a while. Stampinlibrarygirl is an SU demo. Here's the link to her blog: http://stampinlibrarygirl.blogspot.com/
A lot of times it's hard to tell because not everyone uses their picture for their avatar.

I know that there are several, but don't know their user names. If we can keep this post on the first page I'm sure many will respond.

Why not have a stamping party? SU or some other in your area and invite them all to give it a try. You know they will be hooked, and you will get free stuff too!! Then you will have an instant scrapbooking and stamping friendship group and best of all, you can all get together and share stamps (and eat great food too of course). The best kind of fellowship. I find the reason many people do not get into a craft of any kind is because they think it is too complex for them to do. Once they see they can make a beautiful card at an hour long stamp party, well, the rest is out of your hands

Hi there! I'm a stamper and I love making cards. I've been stamping for about a year and I'm hooked. I do scrapbook when I feel motivated but it's hard sometimes because I get so critical of my work. But, as someone once mentioned, there is no right or wrong way to do it. But, it's just so much easier to make a card, less area to cover, lol.

Thanks for the link. She does great work! I'm still chuckling over the card that says, "Congratulations on your new hooters!" LOL!

As to the original post, I find that in general on this site, most people make cards. Scrapbooking is here. I love scrapbooking. But the gallery is mostly cards.... so I wouldn't judge thinking there may not be many African American scrappers by this site. Did that make any sense at all? LOL!

i'm not african american,
but i am a half trini, half white, Canadian girl raised by Jamaican parents. do i qualify for your survey?

i do know what you mean, i dont know many black women that stamp or scrap. i see more in the US then here.

the first time i walked into the rubberstamp store 6 years ago, the LOOKS i got.srsly. i still get them from the owner, if she is there i walk out, but the other employee is a sweetheart. i only go there once a year even though its a 5 minute drive. they are too expensive there.

the scrap store on the other hand, i never got funny looks. they get lots of my money.

I always wondered about this too. I could never get any of my African American friends interested.

Sharlene, I'm so glad you posted . I noticed that you are from Montreal. I'll be visiting in a month, and was wondering where I would be able to find a good stamp store. Do you get French stamps too?
Trini, too.

I've had the same issues with my friends....I'm of west indian descent..born in Canada but family's from Trinidad...all of my west indian friends give me this "that seems so neat" type of attitude like "you really don't have anything better to do with your time do you"...lol..but I don't care I love scrapbooking and cardmaking has now become another one of my addictions.

Getting them interested had been a chore and I gave up...I think most accociate it with childishness...my mother always mocks me...Trini accent comes out strong too when she says to me "child...! you just have nuttin' betta to do"...LOL..But she wasn't saying that when I gave her mother's day card this year...I pretty much shut her up after that...lol...

Nice to see other WI on the board chatting about this...all my jamaican friends look and love what I do but to actually get them togther and get a group going even if it's once a month...no way...too difficult.

michelle u said it exactly!

my mother for years would mock me, i stopped giviing her cards, one year i decided to make her one again, then she complemented me, then criticized it.
she's accepting my hobby more, but its still foolishness and a waste of money to her. she thinks its much better to socialize & go to spend money on clothes to go to dinner & dances at the west indian social club they are a part of and all that stuff as well as go to the casino.

luckily i dont talk to much of the WI friends i grew up with, because they also think my hobbies are childish. i made friends with people that have the same hobby and share with my online friends too.

Yes, we are here too! I'm a new stamper and I am not brave enough to post my cards yet, but I've learned so much on this site. I've met maybe 10 AA stampers on SCS doing beautiful work. I especially love stampincuziluvi2 who is a designer on kitchen sink stamps. There is also a nurse in NY who does fabulous work. I email any AA stamper who posts. Welcome!

Another African-American Stamper/Scrapbooker/Cardmaker here..., but definitely a Newbie At my Scrapbooking 101 class (LSS) all eight ladies and the instructor were women of color; but the instructor said that had never happened before... The infrequent crop I attend there may have one other AA there, but it's a lot of fun!

Hi,
I am African American and I live in Virginia. I have been Stamping for 10 years now and I still "Love It". I am addicted to "Splitcoast" like all of the others. I have a old computer and still have dial-up internet so I don't post my creations, it takes forever. However, with the stimulus check I am going to try to get me a new computer and high speed internet. I too am one of the few that make cards in my area. I go to scap retreats where I am the only African American in 20-30 ladies. I don't care, because I "Love" what I do.

Hmm I wonder if it is location or occupation? I live in North Carolina and in my Stamp Club, there are almost equal numbers of African American and caucasian ladies. Most of us also work in the school system and that's how we met the demo, so maybe that's part of it?

Interesting thread!

Another one here! I've been "addicted" to stamping (& scrapbooking) for a few years now, but I still consider myself a newbie. I started out scrapbooking, then started dabbling a little in cardmaking, now I'm pathetically hooked! I still enjoy scrapbooking, but I find making cards faster and easier, and I seem to be more creative with cards.

I'm still pretty new here, but I plan to start posting my "creations" soon -- I'm still somewhat challenged when it comes to technology! Plus I feel a little intimidated, being surrounded by such great talents!

None of my black friends are stampers (none of my friends period, for that matter!) I'm pretty much the only Black person in the small town in which I live, and I haven't been successful in finding anyone who shares my hobby! So I have only my SCS community here to resort to for inspiration and ideas!
And I feel welcome here! Nice getting to know all of you here through your kind words of encouragement and lovely creations!

You know what it's probaly a bit of both if you ask me.
Most of the WI people I know are more domesticated than anything else. They sew but don't really craft with paper or anything like that.

I was really glad to find SCS where I can come and learn and share my interests...So I'm happy...

I am not Afro-American. Just thought I would post a link to a company that sells Afro-American stamps. .... and a HUGE amount of other papercraft supplies.

Dandee Images has quite a few categories of stamps such as Afro,Culture, african American, Black History, Kwanza and more.

Their selection of books and templates for various other crafts is quite remarkable.

Now, please go back to the original question. No need to hijack this thread with any comments about this little "aside."

I am so glad everyone found this this thread that I posted interesting. I saw where someone said have a party. I cant make my friends do this... I was just looking for other AA women who do this and have a love for it. You will be amazed how many WI people I know that are down right shocked that I love to scrapbook and rubberstamp. They see my work and then look in disbelief it is hilarious!!!!

Interesting thread... I am Jewish and have found lots of Jews who do stamp and scrap (and have hooked a few), as well as lots of Hispanic women friends, but I have not met more than a couple Black women who do. Of course, I know hundreds of White women who DON'T! They all just don't know what they are missing - Black, White, Brown, Yellow, Purple - it doesn't matter - we just like to have FUN!!!

Madama Butterfly thanks for starting this thread,i to had the same thoughts,if I had not been a member of the Red Hat Society I would have never known about this craft (card Making)I don't know any AA that are Card Makers, and i love it i find it is so relaxing,i have posted some of my cards here but i didn't get any comments on them,i know they are not as good as some of the ladies here but i think the more i do the better they are getting.I was told that I should have told how and what i did to make my cards so that is why no one was leaving a comment, sorry ladies I did not know that.
