Another Tile Question

Has anyone else had this happen? I used a tumbled tile stamped with Stazon and colored with pastels and sharpies. I then sprayed with a couple of light coats of Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic coating. It looked great but when I used as a coaster and it got wet the coating and color started flaking off. I can scrape it with my fingernail and it continues to flake where it got wet. Any ideas? Did I use the wrong coating? The can says "provides a permanent, protective gloss coating". Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes!! In my opinion you used the wrong product to seal your tiles. I've used Patricia Nimocks Acrylic sealer on all my tiles and never had a problem. I can hold them underwater and they don't run. I'm not a fan of Krylon, I feel you are paying for the name and getting an inferior product. Try the Patricia Nimocks, you can find it in the craft section at WalMart, and you will have better luck.

Uh-oh, I used the Patricia Nimocks Acrylic Sealer, glossy, and it ran. Even after I baked it, and it scraped off too. Now what?

When I made tiles at my demos house we used clear spray paint to seal them. It works great, my tile gets wet all the time and I never had a problem. Hope this helps!

I can tell you why it ran and you can correct the problem next time. You held it too close. With PN you have to spray lightly and at least 10" away for the first couple of coats. If you held it too close, it would cause your design to run. Second, you need to go thank whoever you believe in because you are lucky you didn't start a fire by baking the tile after you had sealed it with the PN. You, PN is heat resistant and you can use it for a trivette, but it can't tollerate being baked.

I baked it first and and then sealed it. Not the other way around. I wanted to try that after the sealing by itself didn't work. I did hold it 10" away to spray the first coat of sealer.

Wow! I wonder if you got a bad can. I've never baked mine, only sealed them with PN and they are all in great condition. The only time I had trouble was when I held the spray too close and used too much. Now I do several light coats and usually spray a matte coat first no matter what I'm doing.

I have had that happen with the smaller shiney tiles - I stamped with Staz-on - colored in with sharpies - heat set with my embossing gun and sprayed with Krylon...

It looked great and then my daughter got a hold of it and it became her buddy for the day and got beat up - i noticed that the sealent started to chip and when it did it took the image off to...like the image got transfered to the sealent layer.

I have used tumbled tiles and staz-on to make coaster tiles and I just baked them for about 15 minutes at 300 when I was done (If I was going to color in a staz-on outline I heat set the image first with my embossing gun and then used sharpies) - no sealent- my daughter decided to scribble on a few with pen so I have been using those as tests for various cleaning agents so far nothing has budged and the image is still as good as when I first did them. I use those myself - whats a little pen in a house with 3.5 year old twins - I am just glad it was on my coaster and not my wall...
