Let me know what you want to know PM if you want and I'll be happy to give you the inside scoop! For the most part it feels like any other place with a few BEAUTIFUL beaches and areas, but the residental areas etc is the same (maybe even a little more run down) then CA where I lived before. The weather is GREAT and overall I like it so far I just wish it were bigger and had more national chains (like a victorias secret, bath and body works, micheals, Target etc!) If I am here in Oct (maybe vacationing myself!) we can meet up and do lunch or something!!
Yes, Aubrey, we are SOOOO lacking in the major chains! I went to a Target for the first time in my life last year on a trip to Denver. I've never set foot in a Michaels, Victoria Secret, Ikea, or any of those other stores I long for. It gets worse! Many places won't even DELIVER to Hawaii (they specify CONTINENTAL U.S.) only. It's quite insulting, actually. I hope the beaches make up for poor shopping experiences you will now have. Maybe you'll develop a fondness for poi and it will all be worth it LOL! ;)

YUCKY-lala I hated poi- but I have grown fond of Spam (they actully sell it at mcdonalds here!!)! I already learned the challenges about having people ship here but I'll survive it's 5.5 years max and I fly free space A home for shopping trips... oh wait I mean visits to my family! :p
AUBREY...DO NOT I repeat DO NOT be making plans with anyone in October..... YOU WILL BE IN TEXAS THE 1ST WEEKEND IN OCTOBER!!!! After that, plan your little heart out!!! Remember....89 days!!! Luv ya girly...Shanon

Is Spam really that popular there?? I had heard that but sometimes you wonder how exaggerated things are.
I did know there wasn't a Target, but ya know, I can live without a Target considering I'll be IN HAWAII!! Lol. Plus I'll save a lot of money not having one. As long as I have a Walmart I'm fine. I've heard the Military Exchanges are pretty good (?)
It was the same way in Cuba, online companies would not deliver to APO/FPO addresses, so we sent it to my parents and they sent it to us. A pain but if we really want/need something we can do that.
Do you feel like you're in the States or do you feel a bit removed?
I had A LOT of questions at first, but now I've calmed down about the move (lol), but as we get closer I'm sure I'll have more questions for you.

Spam is very popular there and other Islands. My friends from Tonga and Samoa when they vist home their families want them to bring Spam because its expenses there.

The Navy has the largest NEX here in the US it is AWSOME I felt like I walked into a really cheap shopping mall!! I've had a hard time with people not shipping to me and that's the only reason I feel removed. I had to visit my hubby in Alabama and I thought it was way worse there then it is here. There weren't many stores there either and there was NOTHING to do there.... at least here we have the beach and all the tourist things to do, plus the bases have a lot of stuff that's really cheap to do and they do special events all the time. All in all I am adjusing well, and yeah SPAM is huge here- they sell it at McDonalds, along with rice in a little value meal. Can't wait to have another friend down here!
we were up on kbay for 3 1/2years and there are alot of stampers up there!
*someone asked about the lifestyle*
it's great! you can get island fever, but just make sure you don't do all the sightseeing the first year. spread it out ;)
i never thought i'd say this, but we miss hawaii soooo much!!! never would've survived if it wasn't for the military and commissaries/exchanges though!
I wished I lived in Hawaii. I keep telling Ross to let Mr. Jobs know that they can build an apple company there. OH well. I hated poi as well, ugh. My face winces just thinking about it.
Why wouldn't you think you'd miss Hawaii?!? When people ask how long we're going my husband tells them "at least" 3 yrs, I think he's planning on liking it - lol. I can't imagine anywhere measuring up after living in a place people spend $$$$$ to honeymoon and vacation. I go to the beach 3 times a week here in NC, I can't imagine how picky I'll be after going to some of the world's best rated beaches - lol.
Spam and rice at McDonald's - too cool!
Another (possibly) dumb question - I'm getting really weird conflicting info on clothes there. People there now say stores sell clothes with the same seasons as the US. So when we go in October it'll be warm but all we'll find is fall/winter clothes. People I've run into who used to live there and have grown up there say no, it's spring/summer year-round in stores, but you need zip up jackets or cardigans in mornings and evenings (breezy and chilly). So which is it?

It really depends on the store you shop at. It used to be spring/summer year-round in stores BUT a lot of stores are now carrying the fall/winter clothes--especially the chains like Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic etc. Sometimes I wonder "what's the point" since we can't use them here, but we do have the college kids who need that stuff available as well as other frequent travelers. It just makes it hard to shop amongst all that long-sleeve stuff and it's close to 90 degrees outside.
Let me know if you need more info on living here. I have to say that some people who move here really love it and then others have "sticker shock" or "culture shock" and totally hate it.
I'm here in Ewa Gentry and would love to meet up. I have been here for a little over 9 years and just love it. Fortunatley, and unfortunately, we are about to relocate soon (new job offer which is actually HOME for us). We miss the family but feel we will miss our Hawaiian Ohana once we move. Let me know if you wish to get together I'd love to. I have a 10 year old and a ten month old.
Hi
my name is Carla and I live on Hickam AFB, I have been here for 3 years and have one more to go.
I am a Stampin'Up demonstrator, have been since January, love it.
would love to meet you.
Carla.
Yes it is true that stores here sale winter clothes.
Even in the summer time you see same Hawaiians wearing sweaters.
Spam, rice and macaroni salad are very popular here, every meal comes with rice and macaroni salad. Also if you like sushi this is the place to be.
Hawaii is beautifull and the weather is always nice, Christmas doesn't seem like Christmas because it doesn't get cold.
I am a military wife so we wil be moving next year but it was nice to have the opportunitty to live here.
mahalo,
Carla.
Well my Do the Hula set and Island wheel came last night, so I'm really in the Hawaiian mood now - lol. I want to get started on my Christmas cards (using the palm tree).
I know October will be here faster than I know it, but I can't wait to get all the moving over with and be there!
