did you ever get to know someone, or at least decide that you had similar views and card style as someone, so you sort of noticed them when you saw their avatar, be it a flower or an actual picture? then they change their avatar and you hadnt really paid attention to their name and now you dont know if they have left the SU! demo side forever, or if you still see them and dont know it? am i making sense? ive changed mine a few times too. i wish for a day we could all change back to old pictures so i can write some names down. lesson learned for me, if you have a person that you agree with alot, or even disagree with, or who has a style you like, make a note of them.

I had this happen a couple of times, then I learned.
You can add them to your buddy list, then no matter which avatar they have you will know you added them for a reason and will be able to search by name.
interesting perspective! i just changed mine because ... even though I LOVE MY DOGGIE!! ... i wanted my actual face in my picture. the day i originally set it up, i didn't have that many photos handy so i went with what i had. since then, i realized i really like it when i can see people's faces because since we are sooooooooooooooooooooo virtual, it brings an additional element of human-ness. this is my opinion only i am on my PC *a ton* for work, so i like to see humans
i never thought it would be confusing! i love the idea to add them to the buddy list. i have never used that.
I've wanted to change my avatar from my (now deceased) guinea pig to my new granddaughter, but I thought I should leave it as is til after Convention - people will say "So YOU'RE the one with the guinea pig picture!!" <g>

I do this all the time...be it avatars or packaging on products in the store. I'll find a type of something I love, then they change the packaging, and I have no idea which one it is that I like.
I live in an area of Texas that has a lot of tiny towns amidst a few larger ones, and a ton of folks have lived there their whole lives or at least for 20 years or so. We have a bad habit when giving directions of saying things like, "turn left where the old fire house used to be" And most folks know right where that is. So Soozie.....even if you change your avatar after convention, you'll always be the one that "used to have the guinea pig pic" lol At least to me and maybe a few other Texans. hehehe

ya, it might be confusing at convention, with all these strangers walking around instead of the dogs, guinea pigs, cartoons, rock stars or toddlers we've come to know & love!
My son just said to me last nite...."When are you going to put MY picture up as your avatar instead of the dog!?" LOL
My son said to me last night "would you please take my picture off your computer" LOL. I do get to know people by their picture. Interesting subject....

I totally know what you mean. I especially like it when people put a picture of themselves up. At first, I felt weird about it or nervous, but I agree with Sharon - it's nice to see the actual *person*. Although, that guinea pig is kinda cute too! ;) . . . and all the hot men aren't so bad either . . .
My avatar is of me and my hubby.. but I can't imagine that anyone would notice if I changed mine.. I do notice avatars of others.. Chris being one of them.. I actually asked my hubby to shave his had like Chris's during AI.. he politely said "no!" he knew I was just kidding.. what a fun thread ~ Pam

Personally, I totally agree with the OP. I don't really look at people's names (although I should). I associate them more with their pictures. When the picture changes, any association I have with that person is lost.
In regards to what the picture is, I feel like the avatar should be a reflection of who that person wants to be identified as. I think their own picture is best, but if they aren't comfortable with that (and I wasn't for a while, I've only had my "real" picture up for a couple of months), I like it when folks put up non-human "alter egos" (such as their guinea pig, cat, dog, flower, etc.) because that is easy for me to also identify.
However, I do tend to get confused when posters put up pictures of other people (spouse, child, celebrity, etc. - especially when I see the photo is of a man and the poster is a female).
Personally I'd much rather look at Nathan Fillion than my own picture, so I think I'll keep him as my avatar. If anyone wants to see the real me all they have to do is go to my story on my DBWS. I'm not trying to hide -- just don't like looking at myself much. And be honest, you'd miss Captain Tightpants if I ever changed that avatar out!
I have to say, though, that it was pretty funny at Leadership when Jan (Inkerzaway) and I spend a lot of time over 3 days together before, on the final night, she was cruising SCS with me in the room and came across one of my posts and said "Oh, so that's who you are!" LOL! That's when I knew for sure that no one pays any attention to my name on SCS - it's all about the avatar!
Yours was the first avatar that caught my eye!! I just had a baby and if it was a boy I was going to name him Nathan...after Mr. Fillion himself. Alas, I had a girl and she's in MY avatar. Oh yeah, my husband wanted to name our baby Miranda (after the planet in "Firefly") but I just couldn't say that name without whispering it. Her name is Amanda Grace Elizabeth
I miss Serenity!!!

but it was her first beniget (spelling?) and I love the powder sugar lips!
Ok... you have convinced me to put my photo as my avatar... mind you I don't think I have much chance of meeting most of you... Brisbane Australia is a loooooonnnnnnggggg way from most of you! Ha Ha
I guess I'm the oddball! My eyes always scan the name first, so I tend to remember that. I do recognize avatars, too, but usually don't have a problem when they switch because I generally have made note of the name. I like seeing the different avatars and how they can reflect a persons interests or personality. I used to have my 12 y/o ds, but he complained so I switched to our kitty Jackie.

Oh I would notice! Most of the time, I can't remember the person's screen name until I see their picture. I never really thought about it till I saw this thread. So maybe I should change my avatar and take on a new identity?

That's a sweater?!? Omigosh! I've always thought that was a "joke" photo with you in a orange prison jumpsuit! Whoops! I guess it's all in how the photos are perceived...so maybe we shouldn't have avatars at ALL!!
For sure you really do associate the avatar with the poster.
One April 1st on a forum over here some of the girls switched their avatars around, and it was SO confusing - took me several posts before I realised the style of what I was reading didn't match the person I thought it was from their pic. Then I looked at the user-names...
And I thought I was far more a verbal person than a visual one.
On a similar note, I did notice on one of my gallery cards once, I had a certain number of comments, then a few hours later there was one less.... I wondered about that! Maybe someone was trying to avoid me, didn't recognize my avatar and left a comment, then deleted it after realizing who they left a comment for! Ha-ha! If that's the case, I'd just have to laugh!
I tend to identify posters as their usernames - it's bolded in black and above the avatar, so that's what I look at.
Sometimes I have to scroll back in a thread because someone will have typed out the poster's name (not username) so I think "who is that??"
I do associate the posters with their avatar picture, but only after having seen their avatars repeatedly. I really do notice mostly only the username.
I look at names, not at the avatars to remember people, so it's not a big deal to me. I enjoy seeing everyone's avatar changing frequently, inspires me to change mine!

I totally looked at your name, then your picture, and thought, "that's not Gina" and thought you were pulling a prank. Then I realized you are Gina P and not Gina K

click on "Welcome, your user name" at the top right, then you'll have a list of options/control panel stuff. Right under the option for the avatar is the profile pic option...

Mine is a Purple Cat card handdrawn by my granddaughter when she was 6. I will probably never change it! If you look close, you can see my screen name "Bugga" which is also my "grandma" name.

I go by the names too, don't know why, although I do recognize pics as well. I saw one the other day and said to myself "oh she has the same avatar as so-and-so" lol
