THis is how the question came about, I have a 6 month old that is formula fed and go through a can of formula a week (or faster) and hated throwing away the empty cans. Then I remembered the paint cans. I have never made a paint can and haven't seen one up close, so I don't know any dimensions. My questions is, do you think I could do the same thing with an empty formula can? I have to make a gift this weekend for a friend's shower and thought that I could decorate the formula can and put all kinds of little things that normally aren't bought (nail clippers, aspirators, etc) for people. Do you think this would work? Is the 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock big enough to make it around the can with only one seam?
Any suggestions for this AND how to decorate it, would be most appreciated! Thank you ladies!
I don't know about the paper size for sure but otherwise it should work. I took a bunch when my son was a baby and painted them and stamped them and gave Christmas cookies away in them. It worked well!
I am using formula cans for Christmas gifts (I put a memo cube, pen, checkbook cover and an ornamentand inside). I have to use 2 pieces of paper (with 2 seams) but I have the large cans from BJ's.

I think it's a great idea!! I'm sure people will be impressed with your creativity! I am! It's about the same size as one of the small paint cans, actually it's easier to get into because it doesn't have the lip that the paint cans have. Let us know how it turns out!
I was trying the same thing!!! I also have the small and large formula cans. I was having trouble with the paper - the SU paper is so thick and I need more than one piece - any suggestions on that?
I am doing a "baby's first" can with a memo pad so a new Mom can just jot down the date and event and throw it in the can, then whenever she gets time, she can open up the can and update her baby book / scrapbook.
I just am not sure about the paper thing? Even a 12x12 is too short to get all the way around.
I think you can either put some baking soda in it with the lid on for a day or 2, or crumple up newspaper and stick that in with the lid on for a day or 2. HTH
Just a tip. I've never done the formula can (my first baby is looking at colleges...ahhh) but I did do a generic can and I needed a way to do a handle. I just used an awl to punch holes in the sides of the can, then flattened the inside down with a little hammer (so there were no rough edges). I then used a wide piece of gingham ribbon to poke through the holes and knotted the ribbon to keep it in place. I figured it wasn't really a high utility item anyway and it looked quite cute.
