I am still at 609 cards, waiting for more to arrive in the mail. I have an e-mail out to A Card for Home to find out if I can ship through their Military Family Resource Centre. If not, we have some trucker friends and I'll put the word out to see if anybody would be going to Manitoba (Shilo area) to drop them off. I shudder to think of the postage of these heavy boxes if I have to go through CP. And NO!!! that's not a plea for help with postage or anything. I'm grateful for the cards I'm receiving from all of you, that's all the contribution I'm requesting. So, please keep them coming!
Thanks to all who have PMed me for more info. I'm looking forward to receiving more cards. So you don't have to go to the beginning of the thread, here is the info again:
I got connected with two military wives in Manitoba who are aiming to collect 50,000 cards (blank on the inside) for our soldiers to write in and send home to their loved ones. They have sent their first box of 500last update from them said 4,500, so they have a ways to go. They need graduation, new baby, birthday (especially for kids), love you, miss you, anniversary, hello; basically whatever cards we make, they need. Their website is www.acardforhome.com if you want to see what they're doing.
Are you interested in making 1, 2, 5 or 10 (or more) to help them reach their goal? Or do you have a stack (like me!) that you can go through already? I am collecting cards on an ongoing basis. When the box is full, I'll send it to them and start another.
Carolyn - come July 1, you will have a whole stack of cards coming your way!!! I have a whole whack of retiring cards/fronts that I will try and get out before the end of July.

Sounds great - let me know when they are on their way. Anyone else trying to get rid of cards and fronts of retired stamp sets? I'll be glad to take them. They will be put to good use.
BTW: new card count 657! They keep trickling in...I think the 1,000 card goal for me is not that far out of reach.
I'm a military army brat and was very proud of my father [he recently passed away] he was in the forced for 27 years, did alot of UN Peace Keeping Duties all over the world and received a lot of medals. One before he passed away for service in Egypt [50 years later but the military always catchs up soon or later] Please send my your address and I may be slow but I'll send some cards your way and God Bless for you hard work, really there is no other privilage then to service your country. They allow us to live our lives to the fullest
Debra: I will PM you my address. Thanks for helping out with this and for the sacrifices you and your family made being involved in the military. We all appreciate it!
I was wondering how to involve the Post Office in the mailing of the cards free for our military, the goverment should do something like this for the families/soldiers. Maybe contacting the local press or your local MP/P Just a thought but a good one
When the military send personalized cards home to their family, it's free (I believe - someone correct me if I'm wrong). I don't think Canada Post will let me send 4 (soon to be five) HEAVY boxes of blank cards and envelopes free to A Card For Home in Manitoba. I just don't see them being that generous. I should talk to a local MP though - I never thought of that (they may at least have some connections for me). Thanks for the suggestion.
A Card For Home has also been encouraging me to contact a local tv station to get exposure that way. I was shaking in my boots (well, sandals now that the sun is shining) when they said that. I'm still getting up the nerve to phone them (I even have the phone number in my possession).
Carolyn,
MP's get free use of the mail from Canada Post. You should contact your local MP & ask if she/he will help you. Also, you may try approaching a local courier or trucking company who would like the free publicity & good karma.

Thanks Stephanie for bumping this up. You're right - it's been a tough week for our military and those south of our border. We need to keep showing all of them our support.
I have a new card total: 762.
tnewhook - your beautiful cards arrived today. Also, a friend of mine gave me some cards yesterday.
The cards keep rolling in! My LSS helped me collect more cards by sponsoring a contest. We are now at 850!! I just started filling my 5th box. It's amazing how generous everyone is with their time and talents. Thank you!!
I have a bunch more cards to send you early next week. Could you please resend me your address as I have stored it somewhere very safe in my craft corner...... likely with my crop o dile or my glitter glue........off to check my DD craft box for the glittter hard to resist when you are 6, well and 31.
My awesome SU demonstrator gave me some card fronts (on Monday)! Now, finally tonight I managed to get them made into cards. How neurotic am I? I'm only allowed to put a new card total when the card fronts are actually made into cards! So... we are now at 893. YEAH!! That 1,000 card goal is not far now.:p
Glad you started this thread, Carolyn! That WAS a good suggestion. It's also warming to see how many other SCS are participating in this. As a military spouse, I thank all of you!
Sincerely,
Sheila Catchpole

Did my envelope not get to you yet? It really ought to be there by now. I'll check on the tracking in a moment or two.
Have a great evening.
Sorry for the delay in replying. When I got home from work there was a parcel notice in the mailbox, but they don't allow me to pick it up before 5:00 p.m. We stopped on our way to a lacrosse game to get the package and when we got home, our company from California arrived! So...yes, your package arrived with beautiful cards! When I count them up, I will give the new total.
With the package I received yesterday from Lily_Louise we surpassed the 1,000 card mark! We are now at 1,022!! Thanks to all who have contributed. I don't think you realize how much I appreciate all you've done.
How many more can we collect? I'm up for the challenge!

No problem, Carolyn, life takes precedence over cards and things! Just glad they arrived.
Hi Carolyn just an update have over 30 cards [father-in-law's has cancer and has been in an out out hostipal lately] going to see my MP about postage here's hoping for next week I'll let you know for sure when I send it out thanks
So sorry to hear about your father-in-law. We dealt with the trips back and forth to the hospital 12 years ago. Thanks for still thinking of our military through all this. I'm not sure if your MP will send the cards to me. Apparently they get free shipping to the military (which isn't me) so they may do it to the Shilo base. When you find out, let me know. Look forward to seeing your cards.
Hi Carolyn, I just wanted to let you know that I'm just getting going on collecting for the Thompson area. I have 25 that I've made so far & just sent out an email to my customers. A lot of them are teachers & are going to put this letter that I sent out in all the other teacher's mailboxes at their schools. Hopefully, with school winding down, the students can make cards for the military. A lot of them made cards for Shane's wish which a friend of mine was collecting for.
I was recently interviewed for our local paper about A Card For Home so hopefully that stirs up some interest. I might contact the local radio station too.
Great job on hitting your 1,000 card goal! That is so awesome!!

AngelinYTH: That is awesome! I sent an e-mail to my kids' teachers as well with the hint to do them to keep students busy at the end of the year. Part of the problem was in February we had a teacher's strike for a month so they are using every class to catch up on what was missed.
I need to be less chicken and contact our local tv station (A Card For Home asked me to do that awhile ago) and see if they'll do a story. Somebody give me a kick in the pants?
I assume you're going to continue sending your cards directly to Shilo? It only makes sense since you're so close to them.
Yep, I'll send them directly to Shilo. My DH works for a trucking company so should be able to ship them for free! If not, contacting the local MP is a great idea.
Don't be shy...contact the tv station! You've collected a lot of cards & should be proud & it can only help the cause to get the word out more!!

Lindy73: thanks to you and your mom for supporting this project! I don't have a problem with you sending directly to Manitoba. My intention from the beginning was to help A Card For Home get the word out. SCS has been awesome for that! I've enjoyed seeing everyone's talent when they've sent to me, too. Have fun creating more cards.
A big thank you goes out to Maria Teresa for the beautiful cards that arrived today in the mail. The card total for our Canadian military now sits at 1,055! Everybody stand up and take a bow and give yourself a pat on the back. STRETCH! Now sit back down and stamp, or surf or scrapbook...
Hi Carolyn I finally just walk over to the local MP office [just across the street from where I work] and they took the cards and will sent them to CFB Shilo attention to Robin and her friend there. Ending up with 38 cards and now will start on some more. I know you like to see them all and you have been just great getting the word out. Keep up the good work!! Hugs and Kisses from a military brat
