So I went to place an order at CHF for two backgrounders I've wanted for forever (and somehow a few other things jumped in my cart, sigh). I was determined to buy the bgs unmounted--cheaper, easier to store, yadda, yadda.
At the last second, I switched them to mounted. All I could think about was the UM Wordsworth alphas sitting in my craft room for the last five years...totally unused. I just don't like UM rubber and have no idea why since I adore my photopolymer stamps from Hero Arts and PTI. What's wrong with me? :(
I ponied up the extra $$ and got them on wood. This hobby would be so much cheaper if only I could bring myself to like UM.
Anyone else a chicken on this? Or at least conflicted? 'Cause I need a hug....
I'm not a huge fan of unmounted rubber. However, I make an exception for a few things and one of them is background stamps from CHF. They come in a folder with a picture of the design and there is simply no need for a wood mount. I place them upside down on my table, ink and place the paper over it. I think I get a better image using them unmounted.
I hope this helps the NEXT time you decide to buy some backgrounds!

Don't feel bad- I understand!! I love the feel of wood mounted stamps. That's why I am getting the Unity handles for my un-mounted stamps. Then I can still have that "wood" feeling. I haven't tried them yet, but I am hoping it helps me use my unmounted stamps more. I am also putting my rubber unmounted stamps on EZ Mount so I can have the foam. I know I don't "need" the foam to stamp but I really like it. I also bought an extra sheet so if I buy more unmounted stamps (and also for my clear stamps) I can put it under the cardstock to get some cushion.
'Nother hug here. I'll buy the unmounted but still love my wood most!

I guess I'm the odd girl out but I prefer unmounted. They are so much easier to store and since I'm a scrapper/stamper I already have a ton of acrylic blocks.
I love CHF stamps bc they come with the EZ mount already on them and ready to go onto my blocks.
I like using the Fiskars stamp press for my CHF backgrounders and Scrapblocks.

i also MUCH prefer wood mounted stamps...
but this is how i use my BG stamps anyway, so it wouldn't make a difference to me if the BG were mounted or not. and i do love love some of the CHF BGers! i have just chickened out of 'buying on line' most anything!

That's a good idea! I have bought a lot of unmounted stamps lately, but I rarely use them. I think it's the issue of the feel for me. I guess I'm just not confident using UM yet.

I use my B plate from my Cuttlebug for my CHF backgrounders! Works like a charm - I find large wood stamps to difficult to manipulate and I haven't had much luck with putting the stamp on the table and the paper to the stamp and rubbing...
Susan, no need to feel bad....I like the feel of wood too when using a BG stamp...now that you have a few wood blocks, you can cling future unmounted BG to the label side of the wood block you have. That is what I do....

I use all my unmounted and mounted stamps alike. I only have a few that are still mounted, mainly my CHF Thomas Kincade ones. Since I have a good collection of CTMH acrylic blocks, I have all the ones that I need @ one sitting mounted for the project I'm doing. Then I just clean them off and re-store them. I like the perfect placement I get being able to see the outline of the stamp, even though I'm pretty dang good with a wood mounted as well....I've seen a LOT of projects that people make where the sentiment is crooked, and that would drive me NUTS! And it's because they can't see if their sentiment is straight..or they didn't mount it well on the wood in the first place. Crooked sentiments/images drive me crazy!
Don't feel bad but seriously the UM backgrounders from CHF are awesome and so affordable, you can buy more that way!
As Joan said they have the nice sturdy package with the picture on the front and you just place it on your table, ink it up, place the paper on top and press!
I actually find it easier to do this way since I don't have to pick up a large stamp with my hands, it's more comfortable.
Another AWESOME company for background stamps is Unity Stamp Co. They are $7 and come mounted on a thin cassette of wood. It's not thick wood with rounded corners but you could still pick it up and stamp that way if you prefer, but I still place it upside down on the table.
Sorry to hijack, just thought I'd share another great source and maybe a solution to the wood preferance but inexpensive choice.
....I've seen a LOT of projects that people make where the sentiment is crooked, and that would drive me NUTS!....
Yep. That's why I have a stamp positioner and am not afraid to use it, LOL!
I know it's just personal preference and in the grand scheme of life, the universe and everything, it hardly matters. If you like something, what's the harm in sticking with it? But dang, a girl should be able to save a few bucks on 2 stinkin' stamps without being all adither about it!

"Big wood is good!!!"
ROTFLMAO! Every time I remember her first saying that, I just crack up!

Could you buy them unmounted and then double-mount them to the back of SU backgrounds that you have? That way you have a wood block to use them with?
I personally use my backgrounders unmounted. I bought the clear block when I first started and that was a huge waste- it's so heavy and ackward to hold I never mount them.

Me too. Since i've mounted my stamps on EZ Mount and use acrylic blocks, I rarely have this problem and I don't have to use my StampAMaJig either.
You really need to buy the stamps the way you like them though. I prefer EZMount. Although I have not yet converted my background stamps. My main reason for converting was for space and the BG stamps really don't take up that much more space than if I unmounted them. Have fun with your new stamps when they arrive. I haven't ordered from them yet, but do like their stamps. Too many stamps, not enough money.
Well, I like unmounted backgrounds, but I never use my unmounted rubber alphabet sets either. I always use my clear alpha sets instead. It is sooo much easier for me to see the actual letters, and not just the outline of the unmounted rubber letter. Now I will only buy sentiments and alphabet sets if they are clear stamps, not even unmounted rubber.
I prefer wood mounted stamps, but I use UM rubber a lot, because I get them with a club that I belong to. I've got more UM than WM, because of this club. Three sheets each month and 5 or 6 WM. I've had to get used to it. I'll admit, UM stores really flat!
I have both and use both mounted and unmounted. I am trying to save space, but I have some old favorites that are wood mounted and I always say "if it already works, don't fix it"
I love unmounted for all of the obvious reasons, and have a ton of acrylic stamps and plain rubber, too - but... I see no reason to unmount my SU background stamps and when I order the CHF ones on my wishlist I will order them on wood too. I have large acrylic blocks but I think for such a large stamp I just prefer the wood.
I don't see anything wrong with having a mix of unmounted and mounted for whatever reason, rational or irrational LOL!! It's whatever floats your boat ... maybe I'm fickle, but with all of the SU I unmounted and all of the acrylic stamps I love, I still will not unmount my Penny Black, Thomas Kinkade, House Mouse etc. that came on wood blocks.

Thanks, Nancy. I'm feeling much more normal now. ;)
