I was at Hallmark and they had the remainder of their Christmas ornaments on sale for $1. They had a really cute "my fifth christmas" ornament that I bought because my daughter will be 5 this month and I thought I could give it to her this Christmas (2007). Well, turns out it is dated 2006. What I'm wondering, and have wondered before is this: Technically, since her bday is in Feb., 2006 WAS her fifth Christmas but she will be 5 for 2007. What are your thoughts on this? The ornament is a roller skating kitten with a 5 on her sweater and 2006 on her scarf. I know this is a pretty trivial thing but I am **** about this kind of stuff. It's a sickness ;) . TIA!

I altered one of the hallmark ornaments I had to make it fit my occasion..can you get a paint marker and color over the scarf (I used a gold paint marker) and then write on it with a different marker, or not even put a year on it at all?

Even though you'll be giving it to her in a different year from the one printed on the ornament, I think 2006 is correctly her 5th Christmas, and you should be fine that way.
Let's see... If I am thinking correctly, she was born in 2002, right. Then the ornament for Christmas 2002 would read My First Christmas and she was 0 years old at that time. (Hopefully, you know what I mean by that)
2002 she was 0 and it was her first
2003 she was 1 and it was her second
2004 she was 2 and it was her third
2005 she was 3 and it was her fourth
2006 she was 4 and it WAS her fifth
Therefore, 2006 was indeed her fifth Christmas and the ornament doesn't need altering.
By the way, I love the idea of giving her all these ornaments to give to her when she grown. Just don't forget to get double every year so you'll have some too!!

Duh..I guess I didn't read this right. I thought the ornament read Fifth Christmas - 2006. Since the sweater has her age, I think I would alter the scarf to read 2007. Could you paint over it?

Clarification: The box that the ornament came in says "child's fifth Christmas," but the ornament itself just has the 5 on the sweater. I couldn't tell from the picture on the box that the scarf had 2006 on it. I'm afraid if I paint over it will look lame. I guess for $1, I should give it a try but it is so cute I don't want to mess it up. Thanks for your input!

You would change the date because the sweater has her age (5). She was not 5 for Christmas in 2006. Yet it was her fifth Christmas in 2006. Very confusing. Maybe the 5 on the sweater is not supposed to be her age even. Maybe it DOES mean her 5th Christmas!
You are fine as long as you (and her grandmothers etc.) keep buying them in this same mode in the future. Your are correct that this year was her 5th christmas and if she had recieved any similar ornaments before, the series would be right as of this purchase.

I collected these for both of my kids (currently 14 and 9). They change the series so that if you were to get "My First Christmas" in 2000, the "My Second Christmas" in 2001 would be of the same series, but the "My First Christmas" 2001 would be a bit different because it is starting a new series.
Your orniment is correct for the way Hallmark issued them. 2006 WAS her fifth Christmas.

My two children's birthdays are in January and February so I had this same issue. I agree with the poster, the Christmas before they turn 5 is their fifth Christmas. Also, I;ve been collecting ornaments each year for my 2 boys. At first they were like the ones you describe, my 1rst, 2nd, etc and now I just purchase Hallmark's son ornaments each year (and every year hubby asks why I have 2 of the same ornament, well dudh, because we have 2 sons!) When each moves out and sets up their own homes, I plan to package up the ornaments and give them as a gift their first Christmas.
