I stamp off as much of the ink as possible on scrap paper (I do this all the time so I clean the cleaning pad less often)
I spray the stamp directly with the cleaner
scrub and dry

Some people may gasp, but to get them really clean I use a toothbrush under running water in my sink. I make sure they are dried (air dry) before I store them again.

I spritz mine with clear water, dab off the excess with a paper towel and then spritz it with the stamp cleaner and scrub it clean. The water releases the ink from teh stamp and makes it easier to get off.
I don't have any trouble cleaning mine on the Stampin Scrub. I usually clean it and then turn it around and clean it in the other direction (hope that makes sense!). I've found that I tend to press unevenly on the stamp when I scrub it, pressing more toward the top, so this takes care of that. If I'm using craft ink, I clean with a baby wipe first and then the Stampin Scrub.
Two words: Baby wipes! I scrub it down with the baby wipe, then use the Stampin' Scrub. I find this necessary with bg's like Print Pattern, as the ink, after you hand scrub it, gets into the crevices.
I've done the toothbrush and running water thing too!!
One of the best cleaners are the Goo Gone wipes you find at craft stores. They work great on large stamps and removing any traces of basic black, Staz-on, etc. They also work great for cleaning up scissors after a long afternoon cutting up new stamp sets - just like the one I experienced during the Super Bowl when I *finally* got around to cutting up my Sell-a-Bration sets. I save the used wipes (if they are free of residue/ink) and squirt a couple of drops of Goo Gone from the bottle on them for big clean-up.
I spray the rubber with Stampin' Mist and let it sit rubber side up for 10 min. or until I remember to clean it. Then I use the Stampin' Scrub like I do for my smaller stamps.
I don't know if I would use goo gone on my stamps. It's a solvent isn't it?

I stamp off on scrap paper too. If I used Versa mark I will use Dish Drops from (gasp) Amway (ok, it's Quixtar now) with a brush, in the sink with water and all the junk comes off even the basic black ink.
I bought two paint pads with hand grips on the back at the hardware store. I spray the background stamp with a little Stampin mist, hold the stamp in one hand scrub back and forth with one paint pad and then use the other pad to dry. Quick and easy. I used to dread using my background stamps because they were a pain to clean. NOT ANYMORE!

I'm another baby wipe fan, but my one piece of advice is always clean your stamp straight away. I have loads of different inks, SU and non-SU and the only inks that stain straight away are Staz On and sometimes Colorbox chalk inks.
But if you clean them straight away and use baby wipes and Staz On cleaner the ink comes right off.
I must admit I am incredibly anal about my stamps, I hate ink stains, so since I first started stamping I have always cleaned my stamp before I do anything else, coloring, mounting etc

I'm exactly the same way! I am actually trying to become less anal about them. I keep telling myself "They're only stamps. They are meant to get stained." It's not helping very much.
I use Costco baby wipes. Some of the other ones tend to shred when I scrub, but I found costco ones to be better.

I do the same thing. I will use a drop of moisturizing soft soap too. At first I was worried about mildew, but I figure that wooden cutting boards can take an awful lof of moisture without getting nasty so the stamp wood should be just fine.
