A local store is getting rid of all their stamps. They say that stamping is on it's way out and that scrapbook supplies sell much more volume than stamping supplies. I am curious about your preferences.
I'm not a scrapper...just make cards. Too much work for me to make a scrapbook page just for 2 pictures. I have sooo many pictures it would take forever and thousands of albums!!
I voted stamp since I haven't scrapped since 1999. :rolleyes: I need to start, though. I have an 85 year old grandmother with Alzheimer's and an 8 year old sister who'll need lots of memories preserved.
I do, however, buy a ton of "scrapbooking" stuff since all papercrafts kind of blend together for me when it comes to supplies.

What kind of store was it? Was it predominately a scrpabooking store that carried some stamps, a stamp store that carried some scrpabooking supplies, or something else? I can see if it is a scrapbooking store that they see the use of rubber stamps in scrapbooks falling off, especially with all of the other embellishments available to a scrapbooker.
I started out scrapbooking. Then I went to digital scrapbooking. I missed working with my hands and so I picked up stamping. I will continue to do both, but scrapbooking is definitely the long term hobby for me. I want a lasting record for my children. My almost 3 year old loves looking at his scrapbook now and I know when he is 45 he will really treasure it.
It was exclusively stamping for 6 years and then she started adding scrapping until it crowded out the stamping. She is now selling out all stamping stuff as she feels it is "over".

It may depend on the area as to how her sales are. My guess is that she's selling more scrapbooking items than stamps. I think that you'd have to carry a pretty huge assortment of stamps (which is costly to keep an inventory) in a storefront.

I cannot believe that stamping is on it's way out; if anything, it's growing! Must just be the area in which this woman's store is located. I do cardmaking exclusively.
She is wrong, people were saying that when I worked in a stamp store 7 years ago. It has only gotten bigger since then.

I have to say now I prefer stamping, only because it takes up less room and I can do it with my daughter. Scrapbooking takes up an entire table and I need concentration and do it when my kids are in bed or at crops. Which isn't often.

Aloha all from CA. I just joined recently, and I have to say that so far, I'm enjoying it all. I voted that I prefer stamping as I stick with making cards. I've seen a bunch of stores decrease their stamp supply and increase their scrapbooking stuff recently so maybe they're going along that same notion of scrapping is more "in." I personally avoid scrapbooking like the plague. I don't enjoy it at all.
I love stamping, and also prefer that medium for card-making over using scrapbook supplies/materials. I feel that it gives me far greater artistic control and an easier medium to use for creating more distinctive pieces. It may not, but I *feel* that it does that for me, so that's why I prefer it.
As far as stamping being on its way out, I think the contrary.
Poor sales of product is very frequently the result of poor merchandising, based on my observations . . .

I think the store problem stems from online availability as well. It is hard for a store to keep up with all the new designs....that would be almost impossible for them to do. Unless they have classes and hands on stuff to keep the stampers coming back, then I could see the decline. There has also been a move to unmounted. My LSS does carry a lot of Hero and Wordsworth unmounted acrylic now but most of their stamps are unmounted.

I voted that I do both, but I do scrapbooking much less frequently and almost exclusively on long weekends away from home (I try to do this about twice a year!) Stamping is so much easier to do within a smaller segment of time, so overall, I stamp cards much more than I scapbook, I quess!
I really don't think stamping is on it's way out, either!

I scrapped long before I started integrating the stamps into my scrapbooking. I do some cards now and I enjoy the instant gratification they give me to do them.
I think stores are getting out of the rubber stamps, with the advanced popularity of the acrylics for the scrappers. WE can see exactly where the stamp is going to go.
I hope the art of cardmaking does not go "out". One of my favorite things is to get a homemade card from my 92 year old great aunt Ina, they are true treasures.
I meant to add that I'm also an instant-grat chick and stamping affords me that--I like being finished with a card in 15 minutes, whereas a scrapbook page or 2-page layout can take me an entire weekend, especially if I'm working on anything much larger than an A-2 "canvas" . . . :p

I voted for both. I have stamped for years and never thought I would scrapbook. Last year two of my friends and I decided to start getting together on weekends to stamp/scrapbook. I now love scrapbooking but I only tend to scrapbook when we are all together. Next week we are having our 2nd "sleepover" and I am hoping to get lots done. I am actually going to start on some scrapbooks for Christmas presents. I have found that I use a lot of my stamps in the scrapbooking that way I can use them over and over instead of a sticker that is only used once and then use stickers or emblishments to accent the page.
I only make cards. I did ONE scrapbook for DH and it DRAINED me. Also, I have tons of pictures of my nephew, but his pictures stand alone - no need for embellishments! Actually, same for all the photos that I have - I feel like any additional frames or embellishments would take away from their beauty.
I mostly stamp. I like that I can get something done in a fairly short amount of time. Scrapbook pages take me forever.
I think a fairly large population is needed to support a stamp-only store. There is one store in my area that is mostly stamping only. There are probably about 6-8 scrapbooking stores with no stamp supplies, plus several Michaels, Jo-Anns, and Hobby Lobby.
I stamp 98% of the time...the other 2% is scrapping. I much prefer stamping to scrapping...I've only made a few scrapbooks...one for my Dad for Father's Day of my kids, one for my DH of his Colorado hunting trip and I'm just starting our Disney album...which I should finish by the time my 5 year old DD graduates high school! :rolleyes: ;)
I think the deal with stamps is that they are a one time purchase. You buy them and you can use them over and over again - it's a great investment. With scrapbooking supplies, they get used and you can't use them again, so you must replenish. From a retail standpoint, it's more profitable for them to carry scrapbooking supplies.

I have such limited time to do any of this, that when I do, I need to find something that isn't so focused on one topic as s'booking. I like the variety of cards, tags, ATCs and other altered itmems... but nothing that takes too much time!

Ditto me here. I started out scrapping, but it takes hours and hours for one layout. I love that I can have a card done fast. I still do scrap, but I stamp much much more. Actually I've been getting into altering a lot, and sometimes that doesn't include stamping much either. Love making little books, altering tins, etc.
I voted for stamping because it seems like that's all I have time for right now. I would love to do more scrapbooking and incorporate my stamping with my scrapbooking but I can't seem to find the time right now. I used to work in a scrapbook store that had some stamps. We really didn't sell much of the stamps because we didn't have anyone to really demo them and show techniques (I didn't stamp back then). Maybe that is the problem the store is having. Now I am buying more stamping stuff than scrapbooking because it give me the flexibility to create my own embellishments.
I am new to both stamping (2 cards) and scrapping (one book).

I have two daughters and the youngest never had a baby book and now and then she would in jest mention the fact. For her 36th BD I made her a memory book starting from her birth up until now. It was quite a scrapbook and I enjoyed doing it but the greater enjoyment was watching her. She still goes back through and will comment on something she missed before. I am going to do one for the other daughter and one for DH and myself. I want to do some stamping in the ones to follow so I am on here getting stamping ideas and will do some cards as well.
Do you prefer stamping or scrapping?
