I keep my sets together right now, but plan to separate them. When I was unmounting them, I noticed several images (identical or very close) were available in different sizes throughout my collection.
I think I'd use some of them more often if they were grouped by category instead of isolated in their sets.

I store all my stamps out of their boxes in trays---separated by category---i.e. flowers, bday images, animals, bugs and flying thingies, sentiments and so on and so on. Here is a picture of a tray stamp storage by wendykins at Splitcoaststampers I have them all stacked right on my table,so that i can look at all my hearts(or whatever) at once, with out having to flip through my index book.
I REALLY like this idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
In the original boxes for me - I'll admit, it gets hectic on my stamping desk when I pull out four sets to use on one card - but I just love the "cuteness" of a set of stamps all in their own box.
Ignore me - I discovered Stampin' Up! last November and I've been crazy in love ever since!
I break mine up into categories but when its a set of parts that go together lke the parts of a flower, or the little truck from SU!, I keep them together.
I store my stamps in SU! boxes inside iris carts and when I want a stamp I go to the drawer that has birthdays, people, critters, warm fuzzy, etc.
I find that I use more of my stamps this way and a lot of times I just shop through the drawers to see what inspires me.
I also have a stamp catalog where I put in either scans of the labels or stamped images of the stamps. In the catalog also has all my magazine/catalog cutouts of cards I want to make. They are either filed with the stampset or by catageories that match my iris carts.
Thanks for all the input- even tho I wasn't the OP!
I have been debating how to work my sentiment stamps. I want them split up by category. I think I will stamp them onto index sheets and note the box number next to each one. That way I don't split them up but can find all the "wedding" verses!
I know it's sick but I literally know every dot or flower and each set that it goes with. ...Seriously, I actually think it's easier to keep track of all my stamps and sets if they're together, they retain their value better and they store nicely.
So glad someone shares my sickness with me! I know every stamp in every one of my sets, too. One time, one stamp got separated from its parents, and I had to spend 3 hours tearing my shelves apart looking for the set's box (then I remembered that I had lent it out;) ).
I have only been stamping for 2 years and I have acquired over 150 stamp sets. But I keep all of my stamp set together in their original case. I store them in alphabetical order on my book shelf, only after I have stamped the image on a sheet and put the stamped image in a three ring binder.

I keep most of my SU stamps together except I've consolidated a few sets (all the tag sets go in one box, little pieces and big pieces is in one big box), but my non-SU stamps get unmounted and placed in CD folders by themes (even if it came from a set). I've indexed everything in a 3 ring binder and if I want to pick out a sentiment or single stamp from a set I can pretty easily find it. It makes me feel squeamish to think of separating out my SU sets (I guess I have a touch of the OCD thing too!).
Another OCDer here! I think it is so practical to split them up but I just can't bring myself to do it. If I had more space I might but again that OCD part likes things together and orgainized. I just thought............I don't have that problem with all the loose ones I buy from HL or Michaels. Why am I so bad with SU? Any psychologist among us?
Separate is the way to go for me..I have un-mounted ALL my stamps & placed them in CD's according to themes. I have flowers, insects, animals, trees/leaves, sayings, winter, summer, etc. I stamped 2 index cards for each CD ( 1 goes in CD with stamps, the other into index box) as well as a note-book file as I unmounted. I keep all the blocks in their original box with the image still on the block(in the basement). This way, if I ever decide to re-mount, the stamps will be easy to re-assemble.(which probably won't happen as I love using them un-mounted) I can store all my over 100 sets right on my desk-top this way and find that I use a greater variety this way.
I read this thread and split my retired words into groups. Wrote the name of the set on the sides of the stamps to make it easier to put them back together if need be. I never get rid of words so I think splitting them won't be an issue. I think I am going to like them this way.

First I stamp the entire set onto white cs so that I have a record of how they came together. I then break them up into categories - sentiments, birthday, flowers, trees, animals, one word, shapes etc.
I find that I get much more versatility with the sets this way. I don't feel confined to use just what came in the case on one project.
I always keep my stamp sets together. I don't think I'd ever be able to get them back to the way they were (as a complete set) if I were to split them.
I put the set name on each of the stamps in the set when I mount them - makes it easy to put back
I'm new to stamping and can't see myself meshing my stamp sets. I like the idea of stamping each set on a sheet of paper and putting them in a binder. I only have about 15 SU sets but I see my stash getting pretty large and I know I won't be able to remember what is in what set.
Do you keep your sets together in the box when you store them, or split them up and store them some how differently? Like the alphabets sets for example...
Split them?? This never occurred to me!!! I store them together in the set the Stampin Up Goddess intended them to be stored with!
Most of mine are all kept together. Last year I did take all of my retired sayings and put them in one of the bigger boxes and I condensed a few retired sets that were all flowers into one box. Other wise it is easier for me as a demo to be able to reach for a set and have it together.

this is similar to what i do - i separate all of my wooden stamps and then store like with like in clear sterilite boxes. i found that i was buying sets that were too similar and couldn't remember what i had before i separated. i am a demo, but just do this as a hobby, and am not worried about keeping sets together to sell, as i can't ever see myself doing that! also starting to unmount some sets too.
I take out the sentiments. I keep all like sentiments together.
I first photocopy the image sheet and keep that in the box so I can put the sentiments back if needed.
I put sets with accessories together in a larger box. Occassionally I will put a non SU stamp in a box.....ie a cute sun with the Boat Load set...I think that's the name.
I alway take the words out of the box and keep them together. I keep a binder with picture of all my stamps in different catagories. I just look at the binder when I need an idea for say a baby card and they are all together. Some stamps are in the binder more than once if they could go with 2 different groups. This has really really helped me.
