Do you still own the first stamp set you ever bought?
I am getting ready to sell some old stamp sets that I don't use anymore and I am having a hard time letting some of them go although I know most likely they will just collect dust on my shelf. I could really use the money to buy new or different items. One of the sets that is potentially on the chopping block is the very first set I ever bought. I haven't used it in over a year, I don't have any plans to use it in the near future......but it was my first stamp set! LOL. It's tugging at my heart with its sentimental value. Does anyone else have this problem? Do you purge your collection often- including your very first stamp or are you a "collector" like I am?
I still have the very first stamp I bought back in 1980 I can't let it go and I will never use it again LOL. The first actual set I bought I just sold about a month ago. It was hard to do but then I got to order fun new stuff! I bought that set in 1996 - ouch! Good luck.
I do...Botanicals and Etruscan, both of which I don't really use anymore. Also "You warm my heart" which I'll probably keep, because it's teapots. I should try to sell/trade the others, I think. There's other stuff I want now!
I do have a bunch of really old stamps I bought when I was probably 12 or 13. Some are foam sets from Frank's Nursery. I was just thinking about selling my first SU set and decided against it. Somethings I just have to keep.

You know I am very good at letting the old go and BUYING new  so no, I don't have my 1st stamp set anymore. I dont know the name of it but it was in a "kit" they used to have in the SU! catalog in the front...it was a basket with different things to go in it...."bloom" something?
Yeah, sell it all ;)
But I'm a "collector" of paper and brads and punches and ribbon and stuff like that
My first stamp was a flamingo that I bought in 1984. I didn't know anything about "stamping" I just bought it for envelopes and because I love "mingos". It's on an old wood block like they use for words like fragile, copy, etc. It doesn't have an index and yes, I still use it. Ah... there is nothing like your frist love.
I'm positive that I still have my first stamp AND my first stamp set. Not because I'm sentimental about them, but because I'm lazy and haven't sold/traded a darned thing, LOL.
I don't even remember what my first stamp or stamp sets were.
I got rid of mine a long time ago. It was a foam mounted set that I bought at Michael's. It was cutesy hearts and flowers. I honestly don't know that I ever used it to make anything! The red rubber was not deeply etched and I could never get a good stamped image with it. It was horrible. Now, I think I do have the first wood mounted set I ever bought.

Of COURSE, I still have the first set I bought. I never get rid of ANYTHING! If you'd asked me if I knew where it was, now, THAT would be a whole different issue.

My first stamp/stamp set was SU's retured Sketch It and I still have and use it. I bought it for the "sunflower" because I love sunflowers but I keep it for the heart.
Over the years I have gotten better about only buying what I love and usually pass on a set if I cannot quickly think of a way to use at least two images in the set. I do, however, have a hard time of passing up sentiments/sayings/quotes and getting an SAB set just because I earned it (stocking up on cardstock etc.)
Simple Somethings by SU! Purchased at my very first SU! party because it was the cheapest in the book and I never thought I would get into this. I felt obligated to make a purchase, though, as it was my best friend's party. I actually still use it now and again. I love those little stamps!
I have none of those "feelings" for my first set of stamps I bought. I bought three sets, two of which I sold pretty quickly realizing I was in love with the image of what I hoped I could do and could not, lol. The third set Natural Beauty the rubber is stained black. I LOVE THIS SET and not because it was the first just because it brings me the best cards.
Now if you want to talk about "feelings" my first little cutter from CM I had to take a picture of and put into my scrapbook because that little cutter did so much for me when I started scrapbooking all those years ago. My son had even scratched my name into it so I would not loose it when I went to crops. So when it was time to retire that it was very hard to for me to let it go.
I still have my first SU set - I don't think it has a name! It came on foam and my next door neighbor cut some wood blocks for me and I used rubber cement to adhere them. The neighbor is gone, but the stamp set remains! I bought it in 1996 and it has a clown, ballooons. other birthday themes and the phrase Happy Birthday. I actually still use it. It's pretty juvenile but I still have young neices and nephews so every now and then it gets resurrected. My second stamp set was a party invitation one that I bought from Ben Franklin and it gets a lot of use (well, at least twice a year for my kids' birthday parties). I have put some of my other sets into the don't use any more probably need to sell category and then what do you know - a few months later I go to retrieve them. So, for the original poster, if you have enough room to store and aren't desperate for the money, I would say hang on to them (unless you don't like them anymore). I've also found that I can't quite stomach selling a stamp set for $5 that I paid over $20 for, but that might just be me. Good luck!

I started stamping 15+ years ago. Picked up a fairy stamp, gold EP (that I didn't know how to use at the time and had no heat gun and didn't even know what one was LOL), black ink pad and some markers and white CS at a little craft fair event I hosted. Used the stamp a few times and was hooked. I haven't a clue where that stamp got off to but I know I don't have it anymore. Besides, it was WM and I am WM challenged LOL. I now only use UMs (and I have been known to unmount WM so that I can use them) and mostly clear stamps.
I have no idea what my 1st stamp set was but I am like you in that I am recently purging. I kinda feel bad though in that I don't remember which one it was though.
I was introduced to card making back in Dec 2007 via an SU party. I ordered Frosty and the grandiose plan was to make Xmas cards that year. Uh yeah... that didn't happen and Frosty was packed amongst the Xmas decor. Needless to say I was sucked into crafting and have purchased WAY too many sets since then... but Frosty was finally used Xmas 2008. LOVE HIM! Too soon to say whether I'd ever part with Frosty in the distant future, but for now I'm holding on to him....
Still have them. Bought two SU sets at a party, Chill of Winter and Trimmed with Love along with stamp pads, cardstock and ribbon. Yes, over $100.00 later, I was all set to save money and make my own Christmas cards.
The very first stamp set I ever had was a Chilly Willy set ordered from a cereal box promotion in about 1965. Don't have it any more! But I do still have the first single stamps I bought at a craft fair when I first started stamping in 1992 and my first SU! set (Funky Favorites).
I love these little trips down memory lane!

Reason: typo
The first set I bought was also a holiday set... four little squares with santa, reindeer, elf and something else..lol It's still around, packed in a box for when my daughter wants to make cards for her teachers. lol The second set I bought was Sketches, I oh so still have that set-- (mine has 7 stamps not 6) I recently went almost all UM so I'd have more room for well more stamps.... lol
I voted YES, but I am referring to the very first rubber stamp I purchased/owned as an adult (kiddie stamps don't count) It's a very countrish pilgram couple that I bought on a whim at Michaels. I recall buying the stamp, a cheap black ink pad, some cheap white card stock. I used my kid's markers from his school supplies to color in the images and made Thanksgivings cards that year (abt 12 yrs ago!) I could never part with the stamp, even though I highly doubt that I would ever use it again-country is definately out of style! I just have a sentimental attachment to it.
I still have the first SU! stamp sets I bought, Do the Hula and Sincere Salutations. And I still use them both. As for the first stamp, good golly, I have no idea whre that ended up! It was when I was a pre-teen, a funky mushroom stamp.

I don't remember what my first stamp was. Thats upsetting, I usually remember stuff like that.
I've had to purge many times (move a lot) though so I'm sure its gone.
Yes, I still have my first stamp set. It is Christmas Fun, a foam set. I bought it for my 2yr old dd at the time, to stamp the out side of Christmas cards envelopes. Just something fun for here to do.
This lead to our "fun little craft time" Little did I know at that time, what stamps would turn into!
Well, I can say at almost 12 yrs old now- sometimes I think my dd stamps better than me!
And yes I do sell stamps that I had to have, but ended up not using. Don't feel bad at all. In with the new and out with the old or not used!

I still have the first two sets I ever remember getting outside of a single stamp that was a gift when I first got into stamping...Button Bear and Sweetheart Candy both SU. I still use both occasionally. They actually make up about half my collection of SU stamps.

yes. and it's butt ugly. actually the first few stamps I bought are butt ugly and I have them all. The only reason I keep them is because I have this allergy to the mail, and therefore don't sell or trade things.. like ever.. so i'm stuck with it.

Yes! I think the name is bold and basic greetings. I bought the set, blank cards, and a gold ink pad. Just stamped a greeting on a card and it was ready to go! I got lots more cards made doing that! That's what happens when you live in a town where you couldn't buy thank you cards in! Been hooked every since.
I love reading everyone's answers. I don't feel so bad for having a hard time parting with some of my sets. I just feel like as soon as it's gone.....I will want it or need it. LOL.
My very first set I bought was Loads of Love and they offered it as a "kit" with a brown ink pad, Vanilla CS and the Earth Elements CS. I didn't know I would like stamping that much, felt I could afford the kit to try it out. Little did I know.....the obsession would begin as soon as I got my "kit." LOL. I honestly, don't know if I will ever use that set. It's not really my style.....but everytime I see it I think of my first stamping experience and how I thought I was never going to get into this as a hobby. ;)
