Yeah, I do that all the time. I might know what stamp set I want to use but not sure what I want to do so I start sketching and writing down color combos, etc. It helps me not waste alot of cardstock
YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I'm having that problem right now. My mind wanders too much and ideas are everywhere. Don't know where to turn.

I have started carry a small notebook with me to sketch ideas or write down color combos. I am tired of forgetting that great idea I had, know what I mean? If I am having a creative block sometimes it helps to just make a card. Force myself to just use whatever is on my desk and make something even if its *gasp* horrible. It really helps me.
I also sketch out what I have in my mind at times. It's not all too neat but I give myself enough to get my thoughts down. I also label the colors I think I want to use as well as notes such as "cuttlebug emboss" (and which one), or heat emboss, ribbon, brads, etc.
I have a sketch book and I often sketch for new sets coming out that I don't have yet (dt stuff). This helps a lot when it comes time to start creating. It really helps jump start everything when the stamps get here. Whenever an idea hits, I try to sketch it out and make notes before I forget. I don't tend to sketch when I'm stuck, but it's great to turn to when I'm stuck.
I often sketch especially when I'm planning an event to be sure the cards don't look too similar. I also keep a pad by my bed because i come up with stuff as I'm drifting off.
And with the two little beasties at home it helps to know what I was thinking about before I was needed to nurse, wipe a butt or heat up dino nuggets:-)

Sometimes I do sketch it out. But usually, I find that it's more helpful to sit there with swatches of paper, ribbon, etc and kind of play around with different placements.
I don't write sketches. Whenever I'm stuck I just stare at my stamped & colored image. I look for paper to match, abandon the work, get back to it the next night lol! Having a sketch to follow is more organized but by the time I find the papers I need to use I'm too tired to craft. crazy I know.
Im not really a sketcher but I might give that idea a go. Usually I have to have a purpose to create something like for my mums birthday I just knew what I wanted to do. But if I dont have an occassion sometimes I struggle so sketching mite be the way to go to help me out.
NEVER! But I am fascinated by those who do. My mind simply does not work that way! I almost always start with a stamp, then chose my papers and go from there. I do a lot of playing around with placement. I'm excruciatingly slow. I never glue anything down until I'm sure. I'm so bad with sketches that at least half the time when I'm working from someone else's sketch, for a challenge or whatnot, I mess it up so bad, you can't even see the resemblance. I'm so right brained it's always a surprise to me that I don't walk in circles!;)
I am the WORLD'S SLOWEST CARD MAKER!! ... even slower on scrapbook pages!
I'm with Lilian here.. I spend a considerable amt of time staring! After hrs of thumbing thru all that paper, I'm pretty sure what sketch I'm shootin' for.
3 things that have helped me a whole lot:
I have a master list of techniques that I keep in my stamp index binder -cause *outta sight, outta mind*.
On cardstock shts, I punched all shapes and sizes of my punches. All circles tog, sqs tog, etc. These are also in sheet protectors in my binder. I can pull a sht out to measure over my stamped image to see how it'll look or if another shape looks better before I jump to punch that image and then have to start all over.
I have a master list of all my tools and my stash of technique supplies. Glancing over these helps refresh my memory to the many diff. ways I can prep, build, layer, embellish, etc. my card.
I guess its OCD, but I have to have a complete picture in my mind of the finished card before I make a 1st cut. ... or is this just paranoid? lol
May God bless, Sandi

Reason: addin' stuff.
I sketch out my cards too, but I have to do it sitting at my craft table with some of my "ideas" nearby, such as stamp set, papers, embellishments, etc.
