It's easy to put up a listing, but selling it is quite another matter. I'd say that jewelry and paper goods are the most saturated categories on Etsy. There also seems to be a preference for printed, letterpress, etc. cards over stamped. More graphic design type things than stamped.
Etsy is a fabulous little site that is gaining in popularity. I've been selling there for about a year. I like it because it's not like an auction, you list what you want to sell your item at and that's it. They charge twenty cents to list and then take a % when you sell. And if you're using PayPal they'll take their chunk, too. But I prefer it over Ebay.
I've been selling on Ebay for years, but just started on Etsy a few weeks ago. I only have 5 cards listed right now, but hope to add it to it over the next few weeks. I've had a few bad experiences on Ebay lately....not to say it can't happen on Etsy....but Ebay has become quite expensive & it seems they are always changing stuff.....& not for the better!!
I registered with etsy last year and sold 2 cards there. The only two I listed. I just decided to start listing the cards I make since my house is being taken over by cards and I love making them. It cost me 20 cents per item to list. I don't remember how much you are charged if your item sells.
I am thinking of starting an ETSY shop and I am curious on the etiquette w/ sketch challenges, etc? SHould you give credit to the person who came up w/ the sketch? Any rules on CASE'ing and selling?
Etsy is a great site, but it is really saturated in the paper goods market. It can be difficult to get exposure. I've had a shop since October (mostly graphic design and a few greeting cards) and I did pretty well during the holiday season, but it has really slowed down since then. I would suggest being really careful about the types of stamps you use if you are planning to sell. It's important to make sure that you are adhering to copyright laws and angel policies. Companies like Disney (for example) are cracking down on people using licensed images. Etsy's increasing popularity has really caused large companies to take notice. Otherwise, I think having a shop to relieve yourself of stacks of unused cards is a great idea. Good luck if you choose to go ahead!
I love Etsy. I have been using it for about 4 months. It is simple to use. The one mistake I made was signing up multiples of the same item. They charge you a listing fee for each item. It is only 20 cents but you are out the money if they do not sell. Now I just add a few more as I sell.
for those of you that have sold items on etsy, how long does it normally take for an item to sell? I guess I know that it will vary based on the item, but if I were to post something for sale on Etsy, do you normally know that if it hasn't sold in a month it isn't going to sell? Also, do they have time limits on how long your 20 cent listing fee is good for?

There's no rhyme or reason. I've had things sell the day I've listed them, and I've had things sit around for 2 months before they sold. I've had things not sell in 4 months, and then I re-list and they sell a week later. I have one item I've renewed at least once or twice, 6 people have marked it as a favorite, and it still hasn't sold

Yep, same here. It really depends. If I have items that are 3 months old, I'll put them in a SALE category and mark the price down. That helps to move them when they're that old. Also, making sure you have the proper categories under your item will help people search for it.
