I am sure it has been asked and answered before, but what does everyone do with ALL of the fruit left over when doing a big pop top project? I'm wanting to use about 50 cans, and the thought of that much fruit cocktail makes me a little sick!
What does everyone suggest!?! Thanks in advance!

do you have a link to the pop top project? I have never heard of it. Thanks!
As for fruit cocktail - make lots of fruit cocktail cakes? Maybe you can freeze them for holiday gifts? I don't know if this is even possible a lady I knew growing up used to make pound cakes with fruit cocktail.
how clever!! I wonder if there is a place you can get empty cans instead of having to buy tons of food. Thanks for the tutorial link - I've already printed it out for my ideas/tutorial binder.

The trick is getting the empties, with them having been opened from the bottom, preserving the pop top. Tricky!!

Oh - good point.... yeah, you'd have to get already packaged pop-tops with "stuff" in them. Guess if I want to start doing this, I'll have to ask my family to save their pop tops and only open them from the bottom. They're used to my strange requests by now so what's one more? LOL
I have never done this project but when i make fruit salad I satrt with a base of fruit cocktail add chopped, apples and pears, mandarin oranges and a bit of lemon juice. My kiddos(and neighbors) love it! You can serve it with a slice of banana bread also!! The juices soak into the bread, Super yummy!

haha, ditto for me! beer caps, cereal boxes, baby food jars, baby bottle nipples (if you cut off the tip they make great little craft funnels)
I know I have a recipe from one of my great aunts in Canada for a dark spicy cake which used fruit-cocktail. It used to be such a treat when we were kids. PM me if you'd like it.
50 cans is a lot of fruit to use, though. Have a party with fruit salad for the dessert :-) and dress it up with a couple of additions like mango.
I would think, too, that if you were going to cook it after it thawed (as in the cake) it would safe enough to freeze it in small batches. I would also think you could liquidise it in the blender and make some sort of *tropical fruit* ice pops.
If you have a food dehydrator, you ought to blend up a bunch and then spread it out on the sheets and make fruit cocktail leather. I bet it would taste pretty good!
Hum, 50 cans is a lot. Do you have to do them in a short amount of time? You'd be really healthy if you ate a few cans a day, but then you would be sick of it! I buy the small cans of various fruits every so often and I make sure that I always save them and open the bottoms, but I've never needed 50 at once. Do you have neighbors you could entertain?? Make it part of a nice summer BBQ?
I just did 300 cans for wedding favors. I did start eating 1 can a day about a year ago!!! I am not going to be eating any more fruit cocktail for a while!!
I had a great, easy, frozen fruit salad recipe (fruit stirred into some sort of whipped cream). Did it for holiday meals some years back. I'll see if I can track it down for you. Was very yummy and it'll keep for a good while.

I have one too if you can't find it.
Maybe you could whip up a big batch and call around to some local churches to find out who is having the next potluck/dinner and donate it? Or, maybe even donate it to your local Salvation Army for the evening meal (if they accept donations of open food items).
Not that this helps you for the immediate future, but one trick I heard was from a lady that said that whenever she have to bring an item for a pot luck (during the holidays or a summer BBQ, etc), she always signed up for fruit salad, using the pop-top kind but saving the cans for a later project. She would also add a few fresh fruits to dress it up a bit. Then, whenever she wanted to do a pop top can project, she had plenty in her stash already.
Like I said, it doesn't help you in the immediate future, but just a thought for the next time you want to do the project!

I did a Google search to find it (used "frozen fruit salad recipes") ... lots of healthy options these days! Might have to go out and get me some fruit and whipping cream ... LOL!
