Default Gel pens--Any way to rescue them?

I have quite a few dried up gel pens that have hardly been used. I have tried running them under hot water, heating with my heat gun, and writing on rough cardstock to clear the tip. I am about to toss them. Any last ditch things I should try?

Is the ink just dried around the ball point, making it stick?

or Is all the ink dried up?

I cannot tell. The tips are clean since I ran them under hot water and worked them over some rough paper. They should not be dried up as I bought them just before Christmas.

I find my gel pens work way better if I store them with the tips downward. I put them in a glass jar with all the tips facing down. Some that used to be non funcitonal are now writing.

Good Luck

Here's a few tips others around the web have tried:

When your gel pens have "dried out" or won't write well, you can try heating the tips or using (soaking?) vinegar...

.....or use Perfect Ink refresher marketed by Ranger products.. put a few drops in the barrel of your marker and they will work like new. sandie

...I have dipped them in some water and put the cover on again. After a few minutes, they will work again but it is a termporary fix. intgrtyhon

...somewhere I read that if you put the gel pens in the freezer for a few minutes, they work better

....Pens do get old quickly!.... I am especially leary of pens on sale because they are often old stock that the stores are trying to get rid of.

...I find most of those kinds of pens have to be kept really airtight to work for very long.... think they recommend storing them on their sides too

I heard on Carol's show the other day to store pens in a plastic bag and laying down so they don't dry out. I'm glad you brought this up as I need to do mine.

I am not sure about the gel ones but I have heard that you can put a flame to the tip of a ink pen and it will make it flow again. I would try this over a newspaper or something the first time with the gel pens just incase it makes a mess. I think the ink on the tip sometimes gets dry and hard so the flame takes care of it.

I have found when that happens to my pens, there is no saving them. The best I've found is the UniBall brand. Also I've read and heard that you should store them flat, not up and down.

a trick to reviving gel pens which are notorious for "drying" up is to open the end of the pen and blow reallly hard into it. i don't know why, but it always works. the ink itself isn't dry, i have no idea why they don't work all the time!
