I'm making gifts of 1" glass tiles decorated with Christmas scrapbook paper. My question is an opinion question...if you were the recipient, would you prefer they be magnets, or keychains, or pendants, or....?
I sealed 1/2 of them last night and will finish the tiles themselves tonight...but then I need to determine what to present them as - I think I'll 'wrap' them in nugget boxes since that seems to be a quick and easy way to box them up. TIA for your thoughts or ideas!
Even though I made a point of purchasing enough bails on Etsy to make pendants, I too am leaning toward magnets....or maybe pins? Ugh. I just want it to be something they will enjoy...
So if I go with magnets, since they are only 1", should there be more than one to a box? I don't know that I have enough tiles or enough time to order more....hmm...
Since you are using Christmas paper, I would think pendants would be nice. Magnets are on the fridge year round so I tend to make non-holiday magnets. JMO
Hmmm.... I like the pendant idea the best! But I just thought of something else. Could you make a hanging decoration ie for the Christmas tree or something for all year round. Use a ribbon on silver cord for hanging.
You would have to chose something that the recipent would enjoy.
If you make 4 magnets they would have to use really strong magnets on back cause they would be on the heavier side. Some people use their magnets to hold notes on the fridge too so they would need to be stronger.
Can a nugget box hold 4 plus one piece of tissue paper? Test it out! have fun!
Well, I guess it's going to have to be either an ornament (great idea, mayjoynstamp!) or pendant/pin.
I've checked around here and noone sells these in-store. I purchased what I have from Etsy....and I only have enough tiles left to do one more per person (I'm making 25 gifts total) - 2 magnets would be chintzy, I think, and I don't have time to order more, wait to get them, then make them.
Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts and suggestions!!
So as much as it disappointed me to do so, I went ahead and completed these tiles as pendants - I don't have time to order more to do complete magnet sets. :(
I'm wondering if anyone who has made the pendants has any tips on 'cleaning' them up? I used Ranger Glossy accents to affix the paper. After they dried, I had to use my Cutter Bee scissors to trim as close to the glass as I could (unfortunately my craft knife was next to useless!). Then I sealed the back of the paper with Gloss Accents again. Once that dried, I ran another bead of the GA around the edge of the tile. Now I can still sort of feel the rough edge of the paper. Am wondering if it's possible to file/sand around the edge without ruining them?
I also still have to go over the fronts to scrape off any leftover GA.
And I am SO messy when using e-6000 glue - that stuff leaked out from under the bails, but I'm hoping I can clean around that, too. Ugh. Not sure if I just made these too quickly or should have made one at a time rather than as a group or what, but I want them NICE since they are gifts...<sigh>
Basic Grey has a nice set of metal files...but you can find these in many Jewelry supply catalogs and sometimes a hardware store. They are very thin and very fine. They come in a round, flat and triangular shape. These will remove excess GA as well as paper, are stiff so you can hold at a slight angle - which will bevel and round the edges from the tiles.
I because obsessed with Memory Glass and glass microscope slides many years ago. Move from E6000 to a jewelry glue - it comes in a hypo like tube and resembles gel type superglue. It's made for the findings and less likely to pull off the plated finish. This will be in the bead section or you can find it at a stained glass store (where fused glass supplies are).
On my memory glass, after the paper, I would layer a piece of mulberry paper on the back, solid colors. This finished it off nicely, was thin and didn't pull away like another piece of paper could. There are also leafing materials out there that look like silver or gold but are not. So, you can have a very expensive look, but a 9x12 sheet will go very far on a 1 inch pendant.
As for glass tiles....I know Etsy member sell "handmade glass tiles" - but check out the hardware or home supply store. For a good deal, try a tile/flooring company. Glass tiles are very popular right now in home renovation. They come on a mesh background that you CAN remove from the tiles - tiles come in transparent colors, marble, stone and a variety of shapes. The best part, they come in sheets of as many as 50 pieces. IF you check out the flooring place - they sometimes have "broken sheets" or leftover single sheets that they will clearance.
I made fridge magnets from 2x2 marble tiles one year. Each set was 4 stamped marble tiles (super magnets on back) and I paid 50 cents each for 12 by 12 inch sheets because the box was opened and some of the sheets had a chipped or broken tile in the corner. Deemed un-useable by the company, they sold them to me for cheap. Better buy than begging for old discontinued wall paper books.

You know...I have those Basic Grey files! Now...wonder where they are...
AND I have the jewelry glue...but everywhere I read tutorials on these, they used e-6000, so I assumed there was something I didn't know....argh!
Plus I already have the bails on the pendants, so mulberry paper would probably be a little lumpy if I added now....oh, well...
Could you also add a magnet to the back of the pendant so they would be multi-purpose? The recipient could wear as a pendant during the holidays then use it as a magnet to remind them of you for the remainder of the year.
I love pins! When ever I go to a new place, I buy a pin that reminds me of that trip. I have pins from all over the world. I love you idea of using tiles that way and know my sister would love earrings and a pendant. She likes the earrings that go on a wire, so how would you attach the bail for that as well as the pendant? I hear glue, but do they come with a flat surface that can be adhered to the back? Have never done this, but would love to.
So many said magnets was their preference. I add to that by making the magnets into 'pin-less' pins. Just add a washer, et voila! Magnet or pin - your choice!

I have to see if that will work. I LOVE this idea! TFS

That is such a cool idea!! Will definitely have to try it!
