Default Glassy Glaze - duck your head!!

So do you need safety goggles to use this stuff??? I just got some to do cracked glass with since it was taking 6 layers of regular clear ep. I did it the same way as the other (layer of versamark then shake the glassy glaze on and tap the excess off) But when I go to heat set it, the stuff gets blown all over! I had a black shirt on and there was little bits of glassy glaze all over my shirt! I got it a little more under control by doing it over the trash can. Am I doing something wrong, or does this stuff just get blown off? I was thinking since it is a bigger particle that it may not "stick" to the versamark as well and that's why it flies off easier. Anyway, just wanted to check cause it was blowing all over!

I had the same problem! Now I just heat it from the back side until it starts to melt, then I finish it from the front.

what she said.

also I try to make sure that for the subsequent layers, I hold the piece with a clothspin, heat it, while still hot, run it through the GG (dumped in a rubbermaid flat container). Heat again. Seems to help.

sounds like the UTEE I've got - took me weeks to clear that mess up! Heating from underneath seems to help although I still get some flying particles so I do mine over an empty box to try and stop them getting too far ;)

Another tip...heat the piece in the bottom of a shoe box some thing similar...it will help contain the mess...

How do you get the UTee to come out clear. I tried it and I could barely see my image underneath the three layers. Do I need to heat it until it's clear cause when I heat it it looks hazy...is that from the versamark...Can you do the cracked glass without using versamark?

You only need to use versamark for the first layer. AFter that you can just dump the GG on while the previous layer is still molten -- it'll stick so you can melt it. Repeated applications of the Versamark or embossing ink will make it cloudy. Just work fast, lol!

I do versamark on every layer, but I've had no problems with the hazy or cloudiness that others have had. I have used clear ep and glassy glaze.

You can also hold your heat tool farther away so it heats the stuff slower. Sometimes that helps to get the top pieces kinda melty so they stick together, then move in closer to really heat it through. I set up a shield made from a cardboard box to "catch" the flying particles though, cuz you still get them. I guess the only way to avoid them altogether is to use a melting pot.

I have only used UTEE but I dump it out and use a clothespin or tweezers to hold the cardstock and run it thru the pile. I do this while the UTEE is still molten and don't add VersaMark after the first layer. Stuff still does fly so a cardboard box is handy. Or just let it make a mess and clean up later...or not, like me.

Too funny! I think you should break out the safety googles and see what DH says about that. Mine already thinks I'm crazy so he probably wouldn't even notice! A nice pair of pink ones would be cute... maybe put some jewels in the corners of the each eye. Ok... now I'm getting carried away

It helps if you heat the CS from UNDERNEATH instead of aiming the heat gun at the EP and blowing it everywhere. I aim it to the underside of the CS and it works like a charm (just make sure you're holding the CS up w/ tweezers or somethin ;)) every time - never have problems w/ it blowing everywhere. HTH!
