I'm actually just getting interested in my backgrounds. I don't have any large background stamps (just a couple SU background filler sets) but I've seen so many cards with different backgrounds that I want to get a few: I'm looking at Sanded, Linen, and maybe one or two others. I also want to get the Cuttle Bug soon so I can make embossed backgrounds.

Love my background stamps, love my cuttlebug and love PP for backgrounds...who says we can't do it all!? Do what you like, not what everyone else says is "in."
The absolute best way to stamp backgrounds (IMO) is this:
Lay your stamp rubber side up and ink'er up! Rub the pad over the stamp or pat it all over...make sure you get good coverage!
Lay your cardstock face down on top of the stamp.
If you're doing this on grid paper, flip the grid paper over the top of the stamp and paper; if you aren't, put a piece of scrap paper over the top.
Now, holding the cardstock under the paper in place firmly, rub gently all over the paper to transfer the image on the rubber onto the cardstock. By using the paper, you keep your fingers clean.
Then just peel off the paper and cardstock; you'll get a great image everytime if you inked up properly!
This is how I use mine, EXCEPT after I cover it with the scrap paper I use my brayer to get great coverage. Works every time!
I love them both! Part of it is the minimal number of BG stamps I own (and there are always more sets that I want to buy!) Part of it is time - deciding on a BG can actually take me a lot longer than starting with DP. Though I AM intrigued by the idea of using a BG (like linen) over a DP. Hmmmmm.....
Again, I use my background stamps ALL the time. I am one of those people that is just now starting to use patterned paper (for real). I don't think it will deter me from using my background stamps tho cuz I love them!

I think rumors of bg stamps being dead are greatly exaggerated. Trends come and then they go. It's always nice when new options come to light (and with new pp AND new bg stamps coming out all the time, it's really quite fun!), but there will always be people who prefer one over the other or who (like me!) love them both. I do use pp and bg stamps, but I really find the stamps easier to work with. It's just a matter of preference, and I for one am glad we have options.
I love patterned paper but BG stamps do have their place. I use mine a lot more since I got a press. I get complete images all the time now and have wasted a lot less paper.
This is a link to the press I have. It was more money than I wanted to pay by myself so my kids gave it to me for my birthday. This was the cheapest wesite that I found.

I do this except using my bone folder instead of my brayer. My bone folder's always out on my table, whereas my brayer has yet to see the light of day.
I LOVE background stamps. I'm always looking for new ones....or ways to use any stamp as a background I just 2 days ago put in an SU order and on that I ordered Sanded and Linen. I can hardly wait to get them! I don't have any problems with using them, but I read some people just can't get a good impression. I use a stamping mat and stamp like normal - meaning I don't put the stamp face up and brayer it on the paper or something like that.
So, with all the patterened paper...which I LOVE, there are STILL times I want something and can't find exactly the paper....so a making my own works great. Check out my recent one here:
I rarely use pattern paper for a background - don't like busy patterns or mismatched colors. I have several SU BG stamps and use them often. I was looking at the SU catalog last night and added a couple more BG stamps to my wishlist. I love them.
I like to heat emboss the BG images for a bold look but lately I have been using the versamark and pearlex technique on my backgrounds or versamark and shimmery chalks. It's a more subtle look but the color variations are so beautiful.
Girl, ya gotta check out my blog because I am all about background stamps. LOL!!! Seriously, I am behind the times because I seem to never use my patterned paper on my cards. I guess it's because I am a background stamp junkie!!!! I did get to use some patterned paper on my cards at Convention. I like the look, but I think I still prefer my BG stamps more!!!
I have only read about half of these posts, but I was thinking that part of the issue may be that SU just released so many new papers.
Anyone who is into SU here on SCS, (and there are a few) is probably currently using all of their cool new papers. Will they go back to bg stamps? I don't know.
I love to use designer papers, BG stamps and no background at all. It all depends on my mood. Right now I use more DP then I do BG stamps. When I want to make a simple card I usually do not use a background of any kind on my cards. Some times I like keeping my cards fast and easy.
