I had some jump rings (I think) for my birthday (thanks to my stamping group) - when I asked for them I had LOADS of ideas... but now I can't think what to do with them. I'm sure someone will have a great idea for me please!
I've looked in the gallery and now I'm not even sure if what I have ARE jump rings? They are about an inch in diameter and have a hinge on one side. The ones in the gallery seem smaller.
Also... why, oh why, are they (or the little ones) called jump rings? :???:
My mum beads, and when I was helping her look for jump rings they are little wee loops of metal (anywhere between 4-10 mm-ish) that form a continuous circle except for where the two ends meet. There are also split jump rings which are like the part you put your keys on on a keychain, except smaller. I've no idea why they are called jump rings, with the exception that it's probably a term jewellery makers coined, and we all know they are nutsos. ;)
I've used extra split jump rings as hinges on little books made from punches, and have also tried making them as a belt loop idea with ribbon on cards.
They do wobble, so I prefer to use just one jump ring so there is only one axis of wobblation. Frex, I made a mini-album of about 12 pages for one of my nephews using some ~9 cm diameter circles and used a split jump ring of about 1 cm diameter, and the wobbling wasn't so distracting with those dimensions.
GREAT word! I like the sound of the circular album - I have some Rob & Bob coasters that I bought in a sale just because I wanted to see what they looked like - they'd be perfect for this idea! Thanks!

By the way, I've seen jump rings (and they are tiny) used to attach tags or charms. I can never get them lined back up right so don't use them much.

I think you guys may be talking about two different things with the same random name. The jump rings(?) aptly described by Mahloumel are the continuous rings used to attach jewery parts, like right before a clasp or to add beads. They are separated and put back together with pliars. The large jump rings are the hinged thingies that give "wobbelation" to projects like the mini brag books like this lovely example by Kisamarie: Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
They are more of an office supply item. I've used them to make tag books before and I have made my own journals like the one above.
Then there's the double kind of ring that keys are used for keys. A couple years ago, before my life with SCS began, I used the formica chips and stamped my image on each side, then sandwiched them together. Then used a large jewery style jump ring through the hole, then added a key-ring style ring and made a cool key chain! Sure wish I had taken a picture of those!
Anyway, correct me if I'm off base! Or give me a ring...LOL.
Ah - thanks for clearing it up! That mini brag book is v cute! I have the hinged wobbleation types - I think Mel should post this term around the forums until it becomes an accepted term and we all know what kind of jump rings we are talking about!
I started a mini (3x3) scrapbook last night - going to turn it into a Little Book of Cats for DD, with all the cats she has known - and still knows - and loves. Although if it turns out too well, I may struggle to hand it over!!! ;)
There's only one ring in one corner - next time I'll try two and compare wobbleability.
With the big rings that you make brag books with, I thought that was the reason you tied ribbon around the rings, to stop them wobbling and also hide the ugly rings.
Could you do something similar Helen to stop the wobble, maybe used fibers instead of ribbon if the rings are small.
The metal rings with the hinge are called book rings. They are an office supply item and I believe are used mostly when 3-ring notebook papers need to be removed from a notebook for some reason. You clip the stack of paper with those so if dropped the stack stays together. At least that is how I've seem them used (before stamping).
The much smaller metal rings that hook the claspy ends of jewelry on, have ends that just meet. They are called jump rings (not sure where the name came from). A few years back jump rings were being used on cards to attach multiple cs squares together on the fronts of cards. They looked so cute being used but a bit of pain to get placed.
The wire rings that you find on keyrings are called split jump rings--probably because you must split them apart to place the key on.
I *love* the word wobblation and will be using it as an official word going forward. My husband laughs about how I create words when I can't think of the exact word I'm looking for when I'm explaining something to the kids or to him. He thinks its hilarious that my created words roll off my tongue without hesitation--making them sound as if they were in the dictionary. Thanks Mahloumel for a new one to throw out to them one day!
