I can hardly believe it! My Dh has finally agreed that I need my own space/set-up for my stamping. He has agreed to let me take over the loft upstairs as my space. Here is where you all come in - his caveat is that the loft stays presentable in case we company - he wants cabinets, cupboards and a nicely finished space - YEAH! No more plastic! So, ladies let me have any ideas, thoughts you have the space is 15 x 18 with only one solid wall, one has a window, the third is a half wall (open to the entire second floor) the third wall has a small closet which is totally shelved out - for stamps of course!
Rebecca, there is a whole gallery of stamping spaces you can look at for ideas...let me see if I can tell you how to get there...go to gallery, special showcase (I think) and then stampin spaces...I think that's right! :p
Congrats on getting your own stamping space! *sigh* I'll have a nice one someday!
I have the same situation, that I am making a new craft room and want it neat. (I'm the neatkin) and looking for great ideas. I've been finding old dressers and cabinets at rummages (garage sales) and the like. I also need things portable, as I spend a lot of time at my bf's house, so I've been finding totes and suitcases, that fit into those cabinents.
It's not much help, I guess, no links to great sites, but Target and I have had a close clearance relationship all summer in terms of shelves, organizing cabinets, and file boxes.
Here's a link to the Special Collections - Stamping Spaces that sassyat30 mentions above.
My suggestion on the full wall is to put none stop floor to ceiling closed in cabinets with doors. My DH gave me two cabinets and when not in use the doors close for that very neat look.
On the wall with the window put your stampin' desk with your gotta haves on decorative shelves around the window.
On the half wall (open to the downstairs) you could set up table and chairs along the way for stampers that come to share in the fun.
Add-on...
I forgot to add.. that my suggestions will leave your middle area very open for an air mattress in case you need a spare bed for visitors or more tables for stamp camps.
My mom JUST did this and it is SO awesome I am green with envy (she keeps telling herself *someday* I can do this too -and she isn't even a SU! demo & I AM!)
She bought pre-made countertops in 10ft & 8ft lengths (one of each) along with 10 feet of bottom & top cupboards - the least expensive they had, which were plain white, and you put them together yourself. Obviously the 10ft countertop went on top of the 10ft of cupboards; the 8ft piece was set on top of two 2-drawer file cabinets she had, with space between them to sit in her chair; this is her main workspace. The countertop was not as deep as the file cabinets, so my dad made a small shelf to fit behind the countertop - it works great for her to set her ink pad storage, small radio and other things on top, OFF of her work surface yet right in front of her, within reach while sitting down. I should take a picture next time I'm there!
She put each countertop on opposite walls, but you could do an L-shape in a corner or whatever might work in your space. I think she spent MAYBE $80-100 for both countertops and another $2-300 for all of the cupboards. (Top AND bottom) Sounds like a chunk of change but it is SOOOoo worth it and looks all clean & tidy.
I've been cleaning up my area, sorting through things again and rearranging and organizing - well, actually purging more than anything! I am finding that I prefer to have all or mostly the same containers for things. I have a very deep desk, so I've made shelving with white wire cubes ($14.99 not on sale at Target) and zip ties. I love making the shelves whatever height I wish. I have white plastic baskets (found at Walmart, Target, etc...) that house almost everything besides paper - punches in one large on, tools in 2 of them, tags in one, fibers in one, eyelets in one, etc... I made some of the openings large enough to put my 12x12 cardstock in their SU! craft keepers on them, as well as albums or anything else large. This wouldn't work well if I didn't have such a deep desk (its maybe 34" deep) My stamps are in an old glass door cupboard I found long ago. I use it like a bookshelf, with stamps in their cases, stacked up with set names facing you. It is easy to look for what I want in there.
I would also suggest looking at other stamp spaces in the gallery. Good luck! You'll have such fun once you get an idea of what you'd like to do!
