Default Help with smashed brads?

In one of the catties I saw a little tip about smashing brads for a different look; my question is has anyone tried this and do you smash them before or after they are attached? Do you use an eyelet setter hammer?

I smash them after, using the hammer or even the eyelet setter if you want a more dinged look. You can also sand them to rough up the finish a little.

I too have smashed brads and I do it after they are attached. I really like the look and it just gives you one more option for a different look. I haven't sanded them yet but that would look really good with the shabby chic look.
