Help w/ Christmas ornaments!!! AAHHHHH!!

Ok my Mom and I tried these today Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

and they look HORRIBLE!!!! The first thing I see is that this person used colored pencils (we used Sharpies....they bled everywhere!!!) but we could not get the glitter to coat the inside completely. We tried fine glitter (even Dazzling Diamonds) course glitter, clear glitter, holographic glitter.....and more!! We went through 12 glass balls and not one of them came out looking even half way decent!!

So could it be the glitter? Or is it the varnish? We bought some at Hobby Lobby from Dreamcoat. That was all we could find. Is ModgePodge the same? Could we use that? Or do we need the Future floorwax I have read so much about?

Any help would be greatly appreciated by BOTH of us!!!

Thanks!!

I thought they looked really cute. Sorry, but I can't be of any help. But cute, really cute.

When you use stazeon you have to stamp on one side and color the other side with the sharpies so the ink doesn't smudge together.

I would thing that colored pencils would rip the tissue paper also when trying to color. What kind of pencils were they.regular wax based pencils, watercolor pencils or oil based pencils.or just kids colored pencils there are differant kinds of lead inside the pencils.acid free.etc.

I'm not sure what the instructions were for for the rest of the ornament but if you have them can you post them here. And what kind of varnish did she use.

I would love to try these they look better than the acetate ones that stand freely inside the glass ball.

Default Glittery glass bulbs

I thought these were gorgeous and decided to hunt for the instructions and found them!!! Go to HGTV.com, the Carol Duvall show and type in Holiday Ornaments for the search. The instructions, along with pictures are in the "Glittery Glass Bulbs" instructions. I would do the attachment, but am completely computer illiterate and haven't a clue as to how to do it. Hope you can find the instructions and have fun with your Mom making them.

I used the instructions from HGTV! In the original ornaments I saw she said she used colored pencils....not sure what kind. We used Sharpies because I thought the colored pencils wouldn't have enough vibrant color but they bled so bad!! We even heat set them before!

We used a water based varnish from Hobby Lobby made by DreamCoat. And the glitter just didn't stick enough I guess! It didn't coat the inside completely...

I just don't know what we did wrong.....if anyone does these please let me know EXACTLY what you did!!! Thanks!!!

OK. I was here on the site, reading like I always do ------ I spend WAY too much time here -- in fact I had just posted that I spend more time on this site than I do actually stamping -- but this ornament was so pretty and I knew I had all of the ingredients to do one -- so I actually did 2.
The first I did using a very small holly stamp, and had a very small image. I had a little problem with it, I think it was too small. Then I made a second one using the hedgehogs, and it is going to turn out perfectly (I think -- I just did it and it is still draining)
SOOO try again, it will work !! Just no sharpies.

I made a half dozen of the ornaments this afternoon and all of them turned out perfect. I used the Prismacolor pencils and Future floor wax and VERY FINE glitter and they turned out gorgeous, so think if you use regular colored pencils, the Future floor wax and put lots of glitter in them, shake the ornament a lot, then dump out the extra glitter, that should do the trick. Good luck!

So after you put the glitter and shake it up, do you put it upside down to drain more?

Looks like I will be looking for Future floor wax!! Does anyone know if ANY floor wax will work or does it have to be Future?

I am assuming that you used the Future floor wax in lieu of the clear varnish as in the directions from HGTV. So, stamp the image with stazon on tissue, color using pencils and then cut out the image; then coat inside of ornament with the Future floor wax, insert cut out image, then add glitter and shake it up; let it drain and dry overnight. Is that it?

Let the extra Future drain before you put the glitter in. Other than that you have it right.

If you want a more subtle shimmer, you can substitute Perfect Pearls or Pearl Ex in lieu of the glitter.
