An acquaintance has asked me to make 250 simple tags for her wedding table favors. The project involves 2 layered squares with the top one torn on all edges. I would have to stamp and heat emboss 1 initial on the top square. Each tag would need a hole punched for a ribbon (she will attach the ribbon). She is paying for all the supplies so I just need a cost for the labor.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I read this wrong the first time - guess I'm still sleepy. Figure out your paper cost first. Then add your cost for a new pigment pad and embossing powder & any other supplies you use. Then I would add about $.25 per tag for labor of embossing. JMHO
Is she choosing and purchasing the materials herself or is she reimbursing you for them? Definitely figure in your time either way! So many crafters forget or neglect to do this and as a result people who ask for handmade things don't realize the effort that goes into them! I know many of my fellow crocheters work out what to charge by tripling the materials cost. This formula doesn't always work, though, because yarn costs vary so widely.
Anyway, all the suggestions here are great -- good luck on your project!
I made some tags for some wedding shower favors that the hostess was attaching to decorated Chinese take out boxes. I purchased tags at the scrapbook store and then decorated them. I charged .25 cents per tag and then added on a flat fee for my time.
- punching out 500 squares
- stamping initial on 250 squares
- tearing four sides of 250 squares
- aligning, adhering, 250 squares on top of 250 squares
- punching holes through the 2 squares
- delivery?
I figure a solid 4+ hours labor for this. I would charge $80 for, as you call her, an acquaintance.
However, I would offer to attach the ribbons for that price. This way, she has a completed unit ready to go. If she says no, that she indeed does want to attach the ribbons herself then I would charge her $60.
Think of the Advil you will need for your hands with all the punching!
When I get large orders like this I figure out the design (or a mock up using the same difficulty level if it isn' decided) then I time myself from start to finish to complete one. Multiple by the amount and that's your time. I charge $10/hr for labor plus cost of supplies.
