How do you display your Christmas / Holiday cards?
I just got an ad in the mail and there was a picture of some Christmas cards hanging from a red felt ribbon. I thought, "What a great idea! But how do you get them to stick?" That brought to mind my annual issue of how to display all the cards we get. :?
I could use some ideas from the experts!! Thanks! - J.
My mom has wooden cornices above her two living room windows. Each year she sets her cards on top of the cornices, the when she runs out she tapes them to the front. We have a large family and Mom used to work at the county courthouse so she knows tons of people, so she gets quite a few cards every year.
It depends on where we are that yr. lol We have moved way too much in the last 6 yrs.! I have a wooden reindeer card holder but I think that is going in the garage sale next month. I have taped them to the doors, walls, draped them on xmas string and yarns, etc. I think this yr I will hang them on pretty wide ribbon and tack that to the wall. Of course I will most likely change my mind between now and then too. lol

Has anyone else done the wide ribbon thing? It looks so nice but I can never keep the darned cards from falling off! What do you use for tape to keep them up there? I thought about trying to make something with a slit in it to slip the cards into, but that sounds WAY too crafty for me - a sewer I'm not! Anyone have any ideas how to do this? Thanks much! I've got some good ideas brewing!
Straight pins! DUH!! I guess I just never think to "alter" the cards to hang them - like pins or staples. But I don't know why not? I'm just going to throw them away anyway - or cut them up for gift tags, as my mom has always done. (I like making my own tags now, but some traditions still have to be upheld!)
This will be my first Christmas to really recieve handmade cards so I wouldn't just want to tape them like normal, I like the ribbon idea, maybe a little hermafix would keep the cards closed around the ribbon and not damage the cards.
Normally I hand my cards up the stair rail and on the inside on the front door. Its glass and I put one in each pain, it makes the house look festive from the outside too.
Now I just have to decide what I want to do for My Christmas cards tis year!
I use the small hole punch and punch a hole in the upper lefthand corner of card and string on holiday ribbon that has been cut a little longer than the heigth of a door. Then hang with a clear pushpin in the uppper corners of the molding of the door. As more cards come in the mail, they can be "strung" at the bottom of the hanging cards.

if you string a pretty ribbon across a long space, you can also just let the folded cards hang over the ribbon so that the ribbon is actually inside the cards at the fold. of course this isn't as nice for the vertical cards because their design will go the wrong way, but it works perfectly for the horizontal ones... just an idea...

Couldn't you use little teeny tiny clothespins to hold them to the ribbon? I found some at the dollar store. You could paint them silver or red or whatever color to match. Or am I not understanding correctly?
Short - they should be some type of clip - i am going to go buy them today - they are listed as photo holders so I figured they have to have a clip of some type...
Youe could also take a piece of ribbon and get some of those small clothespins and clip them to the ribbon - after the holidays are over you can use all the little clothespins to make cute cards....

Last year, we had a really deep fireplace mantle, and I was bound and determined to display all of my Christmas cards there. Those spiral-shaped card holders were just too expensive, so I rigged up my own using cheap heavy gauge wire, cut at different lengths, bent into a spiral shape on one end. I stuck the different stems in a long block of floral foam (which was hidden by a garland I had draped at the front of the mantle). It worked! Unfortunately, our new house has a shallow mantle, so I think I'm going to have to try some of these other ideas this year!
Last year I hung some Jute across the fireplace and used some tiny clothes pins to hold up the cards. Worked great!! It looks cute too...In fact it's still there with all the pictures that people sent!!

Bought a HUGE cardboard wreath from Lillian Vernon/Miles Kimball (can't remember which) and it has holes that you place the cards in. Wreath is about 2 1/2 feet wide/high... Mount it on a door/wall. Keeps them in a central location.
All are great suggestions! Thank you! I may have to try one of each and spread them throughout the house! THANKS!! I knew I could count on you guys! - J.
My Mother me a beautiful creation to solve this dilemma. She painted a window shutter red and distressed it, then painted holly, etc. on it. I hang this on the wall and then slip the cards onto the slats.
Ya know, I really love that shutter idea. And my kitchen is already red so I could even leave it up all year round, and just replace the holiday cards with pictures in the off-season! So many good ideas...so few Michael's coupons to implement them. How many circulars between now and December?
I take wide organdy ribbon and pin the cards to them vertically, and do a few rows that way and hang them in the living room. Last year was our first Christmas so it was the first time I did it, but I really liked how it looked!
I used to do the ribbon thing. I used about 3" wide faux red velvet ribbon and hung it vertically with a bow at the top of each ribbon. I just stapled the cards to the ribbons with a mini stapler.
Now, I just have a cute basket on the coffee table and put them in there.
Regardelss of how we display them, though, our Christmas tradition is to pray for the people that sent us cards each day before we put them in the basket.
What about the cool round paper clips they FINALLY carry at Target now. They would be festive and functional to attach cards to ribbon. You could even use 1/8 or 1/16 whole punch on the card if you needed them to "hang" a bit more.
I staple the cards onto ribbon that I hang vertically, spaced enough to see the individual cards. Then I just staple onto the door frame, etc., and hope my dh doesn't notice.
I "wrap" the back of my front door or an inside door (in AK it was the door between my Arctic entry and kistchen) with wrapping paper and then tape or hermafix them to that. It's nice to have the door wrapped for decoration purposes and then to see the door completely covered in cards at the end of the season is cool too. Also, then people that come to visit get to see the cards as well...
This is an old thread but interesting. I wrap one of my staircases bannister railings with an artificial garland and then use clothespins to clip the cards to it. I sprayed the clothespins with gold spray paint ot decorate them.
I tape mine to my front door. I like to enjoy the fronts for as long as possible. Plus now everyone seems to be using photo cards, so I like seeing the photos too.

I have no idea how I came upon this one today. Ordinarily I just click on "General Stamping Talk" and look through whatever is on the 1st page.
Here is another GREAT idea. (Actually a very good friend of mine is making these at her stamping retreat). Take a yard stick and spray paint it whatever color will work best for you. Make sure there is a hole at one end, if not, drill a hole to hang it by. Then use clothspins to attach your card to the stick. Stamp the yardstick any way you would like and you can stamp on the clothspins too. You are limited to about 10 cards but it is a nice way to display your homemade cards. In addition to the stick, you can make a title plate on top. She just cut another yardstick at 5 inches, spray painted it and drill a hole. Loop the title plate and stick on a ribbon and hung it from that. The sticks are really cute!!

we did this when I was growing up and my mom just used straight pins to attached them to the ribbon.
she also had several pennies taped in the back on the bottom for weight.
