I was looking thru all the gallery photos and noticed many of you guys had put up photo's of your stamping rooms/houses.. haha... and you have SO MANY stamps...more than I could ever fathom. So I was just wondering how you guys fund your hobby? Do you make cards and sell them? Or is it soley a hobby? Do you work soley to just buy stamps?? hee hee.
For example...I pay for some and my DH pays for some too....BUT he is always saying how I should try n sell some more cards before I buy more stamps....BUT just wait till I show him what some of YOU all have... ha ha..then he can just be quiet. (I have all of like 20 stamps... wow...).
I work a full time job that pays the regular bills - but to fund my addiction, I mystery shop.......Shopping & Stamping go very well together!!!
I sell crack to support my stamp habit and I sells stamps to support my crack habbit.
Teehee....totally kidding.
I work a full time job (don't have to) and I spend my paycheck as I please. I have a pretty cool hubby!
My hubby is pretty good like that too. He bought me a sizzix machine and all the little goodies that go with it. But I don't really use it...Poor thing, he always says that he isn't going to buy me anymore stuff, till I have used what I have already got....then lo and behold, there is a new stash of stuff he has paid for every week....awwww poor things they are.
My husband has had expensive hobbies for years - he homebrews and he's into mountain biking. I've never said a word about what he spends. He's thrilled I finally have something that interests me. He doesn't mind what I spend as long as it makes me happy, and vice versa for him and his hobbies.
I don't make big purchases though. Sort of to start with I did, needing the Stampin' Spots and cardstock. Now it's just the occasional stamp set I get. Now we've moved and don't have a Michael's, I probably will need to place more orders for cardstock. I don't find it that expensive honestly.
I too sell things on ebay to help pay for things....it's a great way to fund your hobby spenditure jeanstamping2. I at the moment have only been making cards for 3months now and only been stamping for maybe 3 weeks or so...so I only use the dining table (thankgoodness it's big). DH has said if I am still at it in a few months time, then he will fix up one of the spare rooms solely for my hobby. So at least that is something to look forward too.
I am in and out of hobbys like I am the shower.. hee hee....but this one seems to be my fave one.
We share a room/office. My dh built a desk that we divided, if my office is ever clean i will post a picture. He has about 1/4 and i have the rest I don't work (outside the home) but spend what ever i want. DH has two statements when asked about what i/we spend to me 'you do the books you know if we have the $$ for it' to anyone else 'i credit and she debits' lol...i do sell on ebay but that stays in paypal until i find something else i want.
My dh doesnt have hobbies, but spends money on what he wants, which usually isn't much.
Both dh and I work full-time. I spend whatever money I want on my stamps and stuff. He doesn't say anything as long as bills are covered, we have a roof over our heads, and food in the house :-)
I decided to become a demo for the discount and do stamp classes once a quarter or so. I have customers that order somewhat regularly but so far my customer base isn't supporting my habit.

I get a retirement pension, and my hubby works! I spend every last single I make thru SU back into SU! SO I guess that would make me a Hobby Demo! SELL SELL SELL SPEND SPEND SPEND!
(oh yeah, I do spend some of my stamp money at Joanns and Walmart!) hee hee
Yeah What money I get from selling my cards at my work place, I put straight back into my cards...tho it doesn't really cover much. But it keeps me happy and that is what is important.
My husband is a reserve sheriff deputy (translation: works for free). Buys all of his own equipment, guns, uniforms, radios, lights and sirens for the car. My SU hobby is nothing compared to his. But I do sell stuff I'm not using anymore on ebay and get some $$$ from my workshops.
He doesn't hesitate a bit to ask me to make a card for him and I do a lot of scrapbooking which is for the whole family. So I don't feel as long as the bills mostly get paid!
Well I stay at home with my daughter and dh works and he spolis me. also, I became a demo in august just to get the discount. It took off and everything I make instant income and volume rebate I spend on stamps and accessories. Like last month I had instant income of 496 and a volume rebate of 207 US. So I have made back the money i spent on the starter kit. I usually spend more out of my pocket throughout the month on odds and ends and then when i get my check I splurge.
With my earnings as an SU! demonstrator, free-lance design work, etc. My hobby and my work are, in effect, one and the same, so I guess it's hard to call it "funding my hobby"?
Edited to add: I can remember a few occasions, when my son has been asked "what his mom does for a living".
He replied "She's a professional stamper."
It was kinda cute the way he said it like that, all matter of fact, like saying, "My Mom's an engineer." or what have you. ;)

As I am in Australia, I don't know anything about this demo stuff ya'll are talking about. But I do want to try n get a job working in a stamping shop, I would love to have a job doing what I enjoy to do for my hobby. I think it would be great.

Tookiepie,
Demonstrators (as we refer to them here on SCS) are independent contractors for various stamp companies that operate under the Direct Selling Association. This means: there is no retail store in between the manufacturer and the contractor/demonstrator.
As demonstrators, our job is to teach consumers how to use the products the company creates, and we earn an income through the company from the sales of those products directly to the consumer.
Does that make sense?
P.S. Not everybody here is a demonstrator; SCS is populated with both consumers and demonstrators alike, all drawn to the same obsessions with rubbah! LOL! ;)

I don't, but hubby does since he's the only bread winner around here.
With that said, I am still trying to find a way to at least partially support my addiction so I don't have to fully rely on hubby. With only one money maker the budget is limited (Sometimes a lot) and I don't get to spend or do things the way I'd really like. Everything has to be planned and budgeted out in advance. Working outside the home is not currently an option, as I don't drive and public transport is nonexisting around here.

Yes JulieHRR, It makes sense. I knew kinda what it meant I guess, but wasn't really sure. I don't know of anything like that over here, I would be straight into it. Tho Iam only starting out with the whole stamping thing. So I shud probly get myself into some stamping classes, so I can get the full benefit outta my stamps.
I work full time (salaried, 60-70 hours week) and also do secret shopper work. I've done some demo's at LSS too for trade of product. I've sold cards from time to time; but really do not find that supports my habit!!!

I am a gonna have to look for a new job like that in the new year I thinks. I just about want all the stamps I see, so that I never use the same one too many times.....sigh.....it's going to take me forever tho.
I work full-time as does my husband. I went through scrapbooking, Creative Memories, Sizzix and then I found my way to Stampin' Up! I became a Demo for SU after a couple of workshops to "help" with my addiction! I had two clubs set up from the beginning so I have been very pleased. I usually just buy what I want anyway and would have it no other way!
I became an SU demo and limit myself to $100 a month or $300 a quarter. when you bunch up your orders and take advantage of SU sales and promotions and hostess sets, that money goes far. Also, I sell off stuff that I no longer use.

My husband and I both work full time (and I have to say that work is getting in the way of my stamping after only just over a year of being a demo).
I have a way cool stamping space in my unfinished basement that includes the following freebies (or nearly free): ping pong table as the primary table for my stamping classes and any demos I do at home; foosball table with a board over the top, which is where I demo because I like the extra height (DS is away at college so that's why those two things are available); my mother-in-law's old kitchen table; my mother's old vanity; my sister-in-law's old hutch top from her desk as a kid; two old dressers that weren't being used. The almost free was a butcherblock table and four chairs that I found at a garage sale for $20. It's wonderful to have all this stuff and I'm now thinking our upstairs bookcase is looking rather shabby and is in need of a replacement (so that the old one can make the trip to the basement ;-).
Well the cards I sell at work don't really cover much....but it's a good insentive to keep making more, much to my DH's disappointment I'm sure. But I don't question DH on his purchases (mostly) so he is pretty cruisy when it comes to my spending.
I am going to try to sell some at a new market not far from my home, that has opened a few weeks ago. It's a little pricey to have a stall, but just for the experience, I think it will be worth it. And I will be chuffed to make some money back to keep putting into the stamping fund. Cuz I have figured, that you can never have too many stamps..... heh heh....
Well about seven years ago....my then demo stated that she couldn't teach me another thing...and that I should start selling cards to pay for my bad habit;) So I tried that and now I have grown into quite the card lady....I do shows in the spring and fall and that total supports all of my bad habits now:rolleyes: This year I made over 6,000 card to get ready for my shows and I have been smiling ever since my last show....I have been trying to figur out what I really need for Sellabration time and have also been redoing my craft room...I don't spend alot on having fancy stuff to keep everything organized. I try to turn old things into treasures.....I'll try to upload a picture of my room...later..

I've been stamping for about 7 years, and a demo for 5. When I first got sucked into the stamping vortex, I was still working full-time so we had more room in our budget for my goodies. Now, though, I am a SAHM so things are definitely much leaner. Being a demo does help with the discounted merchandise (although I also use it all up more quickly!) and I've been going through my stuff from the "early days" and selling some of it off. Other than that, I try to stick with just spending my instant income, but I must admit to using some of our household budget when I know there's a little extra.
I have a paper route (started out being my kids' route, but I ended up with it) which provides me with a nice chunk of spending money every other week, for not a lot of extra work. Those early morning weekend deliveries are tough now that winter is here, though!
Right now, being a new demonstrator, everything I make goes right back into SU! I am planning/hoping to actually make some money beginning next year to help with the family bills and spending money for the family. I still need a lot of stuff, so once I complete the ink and paper collection, I am hoping to use the income to help out.
I pretty much take the moeny from our disposable income for my stamping habit. I work part-time, my husband full-time, and our money goes together in the same pot. I am the keeper of the checkbook, so I do my best to keep the spending in check but I don't do a very good job of it, I'm afraid. I'm blessed to be able to work extra to earn the money to pay for things when I go "overboard".
My hubby is terrific, though, he never complains about the stuff I buy, as long as I am happy, he's happy. He's a wonderful guy.
Then there is always the time he wants to buy something silly (like a drill doctor, a 150 dollar tool that sharpens a 2 dollar drill bit) and I have to bite my tongue because I know I spend FAR more than that on my hobby. Stamping ain't gonna make me rich, but it keeps me out of the bars :-) (j/k on the last comment)

Well I started out in the dining room and then moved to a space between the Furance and a Post. It was a Tiny space.
Then I moved to the place where I am today...Only because my Dh told me. "IF" I cleaned it "I" could have it.
I have 3 full walls, 1 has a peg board 1 has a cork board & a small window. and the other has a window.
The only thing I don''t have is a door!
But "IT'S" my space!!!!
One day you'll get some real space and not have to work in the dining room.
My sister has taken over a closet in her home. She took the doors off and painted inside a lovely lime green. (it's pretty to her)... two file cabinets and a old shorter flat door, she now uses this for her stamping table. The file cabinets she uses for her paper and stamps.
I am a demo, so that helps immensely. I have a seperate account for my SU stuff, and use that money for holiday shopping, vacation spending, and of course stamps. Our "family money" is not used at all for my hobby, so (as usual) DH has no say! LOL

I am mostly a hobby demo; I have one group that meets about every other month. I "try" not to spend more than I earn, so I get to stamp for free (in theory!).
When I first started stamping --- the first six months I just bought with our family account. Then, I switched to only spending what I make as a demo --- through sales, classes and if I sell anything. So, for the past year I have been able to maintain my habit plus redo my stamp room with money to spare. The demo discount and perks really help!
What is this mystery shopping you guys are talking about? I'm a SAHM and looking for something to help fund the habit and pay off the credit card (maybe those are one in the same...?).
Can you help?
