the stamping items that would fit into a carry-on bag what stamps sets, pads , paper, accessories do you keep reaching for and would absolutely have to keep and how would you organize them? Which items would you never miss?

Not sure on the organizing thing, but I would never miss my glitter or wheels.
Are you seriously traveling or is this just hypothetical? I ask because my father-in-law used to work for the TSA (security at airports) and they would confiscate anything that worked like scissors or a knife so your paper snips and paper cutter would be taken away. They also take away knitting needles (so I've been told). If this is hypothetical, I'm a dork and totally ignore everything I just said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just EXTREMELY space challenged and overwhelmed by what I actually own ... I even have stamps at work - (well supposedly those are the ones I amgetting rid of) I have stamps and accessories in my desk, under my desk, on my book shelf, in the utility closet, even in the storage room in a box and in an empty file drawer .. as we speak I have two unmounted sets IN MY PURSE
I get so exhausted looking all over for what I need for a project - I never get to actually stampI need to assess, condense and simplify so I can get stamping .... so carry on luggage, or something similar, it is ...
what a great question! timely for me too since I am off to seattle for a week and a half on friday. the scissors and cutting items should be stowed in your checked luggage, probably the bone folder too since to those not in the know, it kinda looks like a prison shiv. ;p
since I need to pack up some supplies, here's my list of what I think I'll take:
=instead of a paper trimmer (too bulky), probably a cutting mat, metal ruler and craft knife.
=assrtd precut and scored colored/neutral CS and envies
=bone folder
=fine tip scissors
=double stick tape or mono, 2-way glue
=glitter
=mist/scrub
=ink spots
=sincere salutations and generic all-purpose set like paint prints
=xmas stamp set (better hurry up with those xmas cards!)
=assorted brads
=aquapainters
=watercolor pencils, a few sheets of watercolor paper
=since they're flat, assorted stickers. good for superquick cards when you have limited supplies.
though I love eyelets and embossing, I can't see myself carrying the heat gun or the hammer (though I might reconsider if I had a silent setter). normally I am punch queen but they are too bulky and unjustifiable for the limited use they would get. I'd love to bring ribbon but those are so bulky too. maybe some white ribbon and then dye it with the spots.
sorry, this has turned into an online check list for me and not really that helpful to you for your culling of your supplies. I think it's a hoot that you have stamping stuff stashed everywhere like a chipmunk and nuts.
If I HAD to downsize I would probably start with the sets that I have not used in a long time (or ever!)..... the older ones..... then I would remove all the extra magazines and idea stuff (you can get that here online!) after that I would probably get rid of my patterened paper (have never used it to make a card anyway!), extra ribbons (keep all su ribbons) that are taking up way too much space, lastly all the extra stuff that I have purchased to do different projects (ornaments, empty containers, boxes, bags etc)
Julie HHR 's list was very good but I would have to add my double stick tape and my tool kit and eyelets/brads and ribbon.....(I have only 5 yard cuts and they are rolled up in little cropper hopper mini boxes and in a tackle box so they do not take up much room ; )
OH and I would have to add the embossing gun, clear embossing powder and versa mark pad (if there was still room)

heck this sounds like a fun game! I'll play. if I had to consolidate I'd deffinatley keep:
classic spots
clear EP
heat gun (I love to emboss)
versamark pad
basic black classic pad
one assortment of each color family cardstock and a package of WW CS
markers
paper snips
12" paper cutter
rubber scissors
white grosgrain, wide organdy, and narrow organdy ribbons (you can dye them w/ ink)
coluzzle
basic eyelets
crafters tool kit
adhesive
aquapainter
brayer
stampin' scrub and mist
and my very favorite stamp sets getting rid of oldest or those that have gone the longest w/o being used first.
I'm thinking that I'd have to have at least 20 sets. but if I got rid of everything except for what's on the above list I could have all my stamping stuff in a scrapbook tote plus something for the paper (so it won't get bent from shifting around). this could easily be stored in the corner of a room, or even under a bed if you had to.
good luck consolidating. I hope you're happy with whatever solution you decide on
Michelle
Y'all have a good list going but please add the watercolor crayons! Those & an aquapainter are so handy! If space were a problem I would pick brads & a hole punch over eyelets & the tool kit. oh, and the 250 Xyron & the Cheeta Xyron are for sure! I have about 70 stamp sets & really could downsize some of them if I had to. Also all of my cheap "I'm saving money by buying junk" could go!!! :p

I have shared this tip before but not everyone may know about it. use a craft knife or some other blade to make a slit to hold your brads. no need for hole punches and no risk of the brad falling through the hole!
Okay...so if you're not traveling ;) , it sounds like you need to get organized. One of my friends is a professional organizer and she suggested to put "like with like". Gather all of your supplies and sets together and put retired sets in one pile, sets you always use in another and then general sets and start weeding out from there. Put all of your accessories in one place. Put all of your ribbon in one box. Put all of your ink pads in one box. I'm sure there are TONS of ideas on this site about organization and storage.
The other suggestion was to "think vertical". Put up shelving and use as much wall space as possible for storage. I had some closet space which was for hanging clothes, but I put in an over-the-pole sweater shelf thing that's made of material. I store some of my supplies there.
Good Luck!!!!

I would have to have my stanley tool chest! it is stainless and black too cool not to go with me. all the other stuff sounds great, although I would add the Little pieces and canvas bg stamps! Taishea
ROTFL!!! You really wanna know what I'd choose from the Royal Vault???? ;)
Yes, ma'am! I'm sure we'd all love to know what you consider the most versatile set . . . let me guess -- Simply Circles?! I couldn't pick just one, that's my organizational/space problem

ROTFL!!!! I do love that set IMMENSELY (understatement)
But, if I had to select ONLY one graphic set, it'd hafta' be (drumroll):
All Natural! (cymbal crash!)
Now, don't laugh at me! But, here's why I chose it as my #1 versatile graphic image set:
1. Has a daisy image, and I love how cheerful daisy images are (despite how stinky the REAL ones are! )
2. Acorn and leaf images can be used for masculine designs
3. It's got a geometric/shadow stamp!!! Great for background patterns, or for stamping the focal image over, and it's textured, to boot!
4. The pear makes for great non-gender specific designs; pears remain, for some reason, a popular graphic image?
5. The images are rough sketched and open line--they can easily be watercolored to great effect
6. All images in this set can stand well alone, or, when combined with each other offer many, many possibilities!

Oh, I concur, Julie! By "graphic", I was thinking geometric shapes but I LOVE All Natural (as I'm looking at my November CD calendar I made last year with those pears on it!). Ok, so now I can downsize from the other 100-some odd stamps I have here, right? LOL!
EEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!! I wouldnt want to think about downsizing,,,, That is too scary,,,, just way too scary... LOL,,,, you gals certainly give us food for thought......
I agree with Julie,,, All Natural would be the best set of choice, even if stranded on a desert island....
