Default IKEA Expedit Reviews...anyone??

Please share your reviews/comments on your IKEA Expedit bookcase. I really like the look. Are they durable? Usually when I think of fiberboard - I cringe - it doesn't usually hold up very well.

Also - what containers do you use with your bookcase??

I have one and absolutely love it. It fits 12x12 albums perfectly. Each cube is 13 x 13, so you do have to think about what you'll be putting in there otherwise it gets put in fairly deep!

The construction is fine. It's a really solid piece so I don't think you need to cringe!

I've got boxes from IKEA that I'd put in there. They come in a two pack and they are a paper-board box. Nothing too heavy inside them. I've also got the two-drawer insert in a couple of cubes. Magazine holders, baskets, you name it, it'll fit. Ikea has a bunch of different storage items that are designed to fit inside the Expedit!

I've got pics on my blog if you'd care to see it ...

Your room is awesome! Very organized and looks so nice. I am getting a corner of a family room in the basement, so I want a system that will look "together" when not being used for scrapping/stamping. Do you have 12x12 paper stored in your expedit bookcase? It looks like you have the cropper hopper paper things.

oh - never mind I clicked the picture and it gets larger and I can see that you do have the cropper hopper paper things. (not sure what they are called).

Your room is terrific and you have given me lots of inspiration! Now I just can't decide which color the birch or the black/brown.

They're definitely sturdy--a great purchase, especially if you can pick one up in the AS IS room. Seems like every time I go, there's one in there!

In the picture that you posted in January, the top right corner, it looks like a black frame with frosted glass - is that an insert for it?

I've got the expedit, and it was a flipping nightmare to put together.

They tell you to put it together on its back, but in the end, hubby and I found it easier to put together on its side .... read the instructions, and you'll see what I mean.

I also thought the plastic 12x12 plastic cubes were really difficult to put together - in fact, I threw one because it was driving me insane !!!

However, now its altogether - I love it !

Do you have any pictures of your expedit?

I LOOOOOOOVE mine!!!! I got it in black/brown and my DH and I put it together, took about 1 hour.

It's SUPER sturdy, much nicer than most Ikea furniture or what you might think. I used some photo boxes that are from Ikea as well. They have tons of boxes and baskets that will fit in it.

I have the smaller one since I don't have a lot of space (it's 2 boxes wide and 4 high) and I LOVE it! I got it in white with red KASSETT boxes. Pictures on my blog HERE. Since the pictures I painted my stamp room So Saffron, and it looks great with the red and white (also a little black). I think the bookcase is very well made. I put mine together myself (too impatinent to wait for hubby's help ;)). Not really sure how long it took, but it was a pain. I'm very happy with it though .

It's a shadow box frame that a friend bought for me from Michael's. It fits PERFECTLY inside! I'm planning on getting DH to put hinges on it so I can just swing it open.

and yes, it was a slight nightmare to put together but it was SO worth the effort!

Another Expedit user here. Mine is the 5ft x 5ft one, 16 cubby's. I have CH vertical paper organizers, several 3 ring binders, photo boxes - Michaels, CM albums, several binders with SU and CM stuffs. took Dh a while to put it together though.. He hates instructions so tried without using them.. lol i've only had mine about 18 months but no problems so far.

My friend has the large one and it looks and works great. I helped her husband in surprising her with her own craft room from a dissued bedroom. It was set up with a desk also from Ikea, bookcase and a filing cabinets. The expedit was very easy to put together and is quite solid.
If I had more room I would buy one myself.
BTW She loved her surprise.

I have one and love it. It seems to be holding up great but the real test will be when we move it in the next few months. I got a couple of the cloth folding boxes to stash stuff away in. You can find them at Target, Lowes, etc for about $5-6.

Default LOVE MINE

I have one too and I love it. Both of my boys have one in their rooms as well and it has made such a difference in keeping them organized and neat! AND no matter where you use it, it holds SO much stuff! Looks great too! And at the price IKEA offers it at, you just can not go wrong! Don't hesitate!:-D

DH just put ours together 2 weeks ago. We previously had similar shelves from Target that barely tolerated being put together, not worth the $$$. DH said these were much easier to put together and you can tell that it is MUCH sturdier. We use it to store the kids toys in the playroom/basement. We already had the folding cloth boxes from Target so that's what we are using in there for now. There is also just enough room above for use to put these large baskets that came with our entertainment console that work great to hide stuff from the girls, like their 'craft' supplies (they are only 2-1/2.) I really do like the way it looks.

Wow! Thanks for all the great responses. I am glad to know that there is 100% favor towards them. That helps me tremendously in making my decision. Now I just need to decide which color - birch or black/brown. Does the birch have a wood grain to it?

Also - those that use it for scrapping/stamping - how do you fit the cropper hopper in there? I measured mine and it seems to be a bit over the 13" mark.

IKEA furniture for as cheap as the stuff is, it does last quite a while. I bought stuff when we bought our new home in California in 2000. I have moved 4 times since then and the stuff is still kicking.

I have 2 of these. I got one on craigslist for $50 (the 5x5 big one). The other I got in the clearance area because they wre remodeling the store and this was a display unit. Anyway, I love it! I have one at my music studio to make a wall out of (we added wood to the back to make it sturdy) and the other is in my craft room. I also bought the desk attachment. LOVE IT ALL! I was amazed at how much I got to fit on it. I mean, ALL of my stuff (except my cricut) fit. And I would like to add that I have A LOT of stuff, lol.

We have one in the middle of our formal living/dining (which is NOT formal). It is actually a room divider (bolted to the wall on one end while the other end sticks out into the middle of the room). It's awesome - because it's so deap, we can put books on the shelves from both sides. The spines are right at the edge on both sides and it's perfect, like a library.

In my craft room I have IKEA kitchen cabinetry.

I have one, too, and love it. My husband put it together pretty easily. Just an FYI...the cropper hopper paper holders need to be trimmed - they don't fit as is. Pics of my room can be found here... stampinmagic's Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

I cut my paper holders too, just an inch, I think. I used my paper trimmer to cut them down!
