I'm looking for ideas to make for a pirate party. We're going to make treasure chests that hold Nuggets, but I was trying to think of some other things, also. Please help!
Do you have the Ahoy Matey's set? Gotta have invitations made from that. The paper can be dipped in tea for an aged look before you stamp on it and rolled like a map, depending on how you have to deliver them. Gotta have a hunt for treasure following a map. I love parties like this!
and when you role them up...put them in those little plastic bottles with corks (you can find them at M's and Hobby Lobby)...malted milk balls make great "cannon balls"..that would be cute in a little bag and a topper...
You could get eye patches and face paint beards and scars.
My friend put a plank between to kiddie pools so the kids had to walk the plank.
Divide the kids up into teams and give them maps of different treasure hunts, where finding each clue sends them to the next.
I did my son's invite on a sheet of paper and instead of a tea bag, just used one of my brown stamp pads and kind of rubbed it along the edges to give it that weathered look. Oh, I forgot that I ripped it first. Then I used hemp twine to tie it and we delivered the invites. We actually went bowling (cannonballs), so we didn't have any arts and crafts, but the ahoy matey set is perfect! Have a great party!
We had a treasure hunt outside.
1st they had to find the map itself hidden in the yard. I had a crazy set of directions written out they had to follow to find the treasure-which was a pinata filled with gold coins and beads rather than candy.
They had to "Walk the plank" which was a wood beam angled off of our deck.
The kids all got eye-patches and t-shirts when they got there. The t-shirts used the pirate kid from Ahoy Matey. They also got a bandana for their heads-but since I asked for folks to dress up on the invites most kids had something already.
I made a pirate boat cake and actually lit the paper sails on fire so it looked like it had been attacked by canonballs. Plus it was so hot and humid so the cake slid down-we told teh kids it ahd been attacked by other pirates and a kracken and they thought that was cool (what fun to be little! LOL) You can see the "boat" damage in the pic. I got the idea from Family Fun magazine and although the pic is from the back the front was super-cute.
I also made buried treasure cupcakes. Blue food coloring, rolled 1/2 in graham cracker crust so it looked like sand, and had a chocolate gold coin sticking out of it and a pirate flag on a toothpick.
Another thing the kids liked was that each invite and nametag had a pirate name on it
Cannonball Camden
Riptide Rory
Pegleg Pacey
Aye Aye Andrew, etc.
Hope that helps!

I did those cupcakes too. Just regular chocolate frosting with the graham cracker crumbs, flag, and gold chocolate coin. I used clip art to print out the flags then cut and paste them onto toothpicks. Didn't want to do a big cake and the cupcakes made it easier for me. The dollar store around here has a ton of pirate goodies right now.
Also, my guy was only turning 4 and we played pin the eye-patch on the pirate. I drew him myself on some posterboard - copied a pic from one of the many pirate toys we have around here. Loved that party.
Another time we had a scavenger hunt in the back yard - my older son could read pretty well at four so we gave him the first clue (tied up in a scroll) and he led the kids to about 4 or 5 others clues and finally ended at a treasure chest full of the goody bags. Threw some mardi gras beads in and around the top of the chest (which was a black and gold spray-painted foam cooler).
I was just going to suggest oriental trading...they have some great tattoos...just search for pirate!!
Also a friend of mine did a pirate party last year and did the invitations and put them in water bottles, with rocks and sand, and then hand delivered them for the note in a bottle look. Very cute!!
Oops forgot to mention about Familyfun.com they have lot of ideas for children's birthday parties, from cake ideas to party favors to games to play. Love that site!
