For those who don't want to do the baking and sealing...photo coasters are a great alternative, but they do cost more. They come 4 to a box along with a little storage stand. Just insert your stamped image instead of a photo.

I have a buddy who sprays the tiles with a light layer of hairspray to seal them. I've never tried it though.

Ok...you do NOT have to bake your tiles. There are many ways/opinions of how to make tiles, but I'll share what works for me.
  • I put my tumbled tiles through the dishwasher to wash all the dust off them.
  • Stamp my tiles with Stazon ink. Let dry thoroughly.
  • Once the ink is dry, I color them in with my SU pastel chalks. I don't always color mine in, depends on if I want the image colored or not. You know what I mean.
  • To set the chalks I spray my with a sealer. I use and prefer Patricia Nymock's Spray Sealer. It comes in both matte and glossy. I use the matte as I don't like the glossy look on the tiles. There are other spray sealers out there that will work as well, you basically want a spray craft sealer. Check the label and make sure it will work for this purpose. I have gotten Patricia Nymock's sealer at Michael's.

Note: If you do not use the chalks to color anything in on the tiles, you do NOT need to spray with sealer. The coating of sealer is there to protect the chalk color.

In fact, if you only stamp with the stazon and nothing else the tumbled tile will retain it's absorbent properties and absorb liquid as a drink is on it. If you cover the whole tile with sealer the coaster will not absorb liquid. That is why I leave an edge around that isn't covered with sealer, so that it will still absorb.
