My cat peed all over my ribbon storage container!!! All of my ribbon smells like cat pee. I am wondering if anyone knows if/how I can get the smell out of my ribbon??? I have lots of ribbon and I am hoping I do not have to replace all of it - I really can't afford to right now. I don't know whats going on with my cat. Shes starting to pee around the house, which she has never done before...
I don't know if that cat pee smell ever goes away...I have a sensative nose though...Kind of strange to use ribbon on cards that's been pee'd on...not sure if I would try to salvage it...
As for your cat, I would take it in to the vet, it might have a urinary tract infection. A lot of cats get them and they need meds to get better. For the ribbon, I would just toss it. As much as that stinks (literally) I would cut my losses. Cat pee just doesn't come out (I know, I have had way too many horror stories about cat pee). Sorry to hear about your troubles!
As a Cat owner, I would have to agree with the above poster. Cat pee is Very hard to get rid of.
I have two male cat's. But please do take your cat to the vet and get her or him checked out.
With having two cat's that love to spend time in my stamping room with me. I keep all the stuff that they can get into in Plastic containers with locking lids. Cause if I don't they will get into it.
Some ribbon is washable. Try hand washing it and rinsing with a solution of white vinegar. If it works, you're good to go. If it doesn't, you haven't lost anything by trying. Good luck!

Speaking from experience, I can tell you that the smell WILL NOT go away. I agree that you should 1.) get your kitty checked out for a UTI, and 2.) just cut your losses and toss the ribbon out. And last but not least...if you PM me your name and address, I will be more than happy to send you a spool or two of ribbon to get your collection restarted. What are your favorite colors?
Soak them in the sink with laundry detergent and baking soda. That should do it!
My cat pees on anything in the floor, including towels or clothes. That's how I know. My friends have promised to tell me if I smell like cat pee!
How old is your cat? Our is almost 16, and that is why he does it.
My cat only peed outside the litter box when it had a UTI. Also, it seems to me th pee smell was stronger due to the infection (could just be my imagination). You could try the advice about the baking soda, but I wouldn't count on it.
I have cats and I too cringe when I find something they've used as a litter box. I haven't had any trouble for years, but I did find one thing that worked quite well. I wash things in a heavy duty solution of Febreeze. Sometimes nothing works, but you might try the Febreeze.

try and wash it. i would put them in a lingerie bag then in the washing machine. the agitation from the machine is stronger than by hand.
hang to dry and iron.
i have 7 cats, plenty of things get peed on here. the only places i have had problems getting the odor out is the couch-but thats ok, i wanted to get rid of it anyways and wood. if it can go in the washing machine, it does and it gets the pee out. i usually use vinegar and detergent, rinse, the again with regular detergent.
As a cat owner also... I'm thinking you can TRY by hand washing it... but my guess is that the smell will linger. You may not notice it right away, but on a nice warm, humid day you will suddenly smell... well.. cat pee.
And yes...get the kitty checked. Our cats started peeing in the house and they both had UTI's and we found out one was diabetic... get them checked right away!!!

One solution that works well for carpet is 16 oz. of hydrogen peroxide, 1 Tblsp. of baking soda, and a drop of dish soap. Mix together and pour on carpet over urine stain (after having soaked up as much urine as possible) and lay a white towel over top and let set for several hours. Follow up by spot cleaning. I'm not sure if that solution would work for the ribbon or not.
Having a fair amount of experience in dealing with cats and cat illnesses, please do take everyone's advice and take your cat to the vet to see if it's sick or has developed a behavioral problem... you want to be sure to get either dealt with quickly.
As for your ribbon, do you have any OxiClean? Maybe it might be as effective in removing scents as it is in removing stains??? I know it says on their website that the product can be used to remove stains from litter boxes, so maybe there's a chance it will remove cat pee scent too.
I lost my 16 yr-old Big Kitty, Most Faithful Friend, last spring. He was doing the same as Erin's cat - peeing on anything left on the floor. By the time I found out that he had an intestinal tumor, it was too late. I found out that it is common in older cats.
Don't think that because your cat does not cry or act distressed that he/she is not sick. Cats are good at hiding illness - it is a survival instinct. You would not want to think back that your kitty was sick and that you didn't know and didn't help them.
You will NEVER get the smell of the cat urine out of the ribbon. I can't imagine even considering using it!
It's unfortunate it happened, but that's one of the consequences we have to deal with if we have animals. Just like human children, they have to be watched.
The kitty needs to visit the Vet asap to check for a medical problem.
My dear old kitty Madelynn (6 yrs) peed in my favorite shoe!!
She did have a UTI, which was treated and went away, but continued to "pee outside the box" on clothing or plastic.
As much as we hated it, we had to take her to the Humane society.
I cried for days!:(
I was able to get the smell out of my shoe, with some sort of solution I got at the pet store (enzyme of some sort).
I don't think I would use any of that ribbon though...

My cat Checkers gets very stressed with any form of change no matter how small. Some cats will develop UTI's if they get stressed enough, recently my boyfriend brought his 2 y/o grandson over and she retaliated by peeing on various things. I have a solution I got from the vet that has enzymes in it that destroy all remnants of the urine. Having said that, I still don't know if I'd use the ribbon :(

I am so sorry that that happened to your ribbon. I would definitely TOSS IT. Even if you did get the smell out I cannot imagine sending a card to someone using that ribbon. You just never know if the smell will come back later when the card is in their hands.
I agree kitty needs to see a vet ASAP! UTI's are a very common reason why cats urinate outside of the box and it most likely will not improve on its own.
I don't know how much ribbon you had - but it *is* possible to get cat urine out of things... not easy or fun, but definitely possible.
1. Handwash and Rinse the ribbon well.
2. Soak/completely saturate everything in Nature's Miracle - allow to air dry - several days.
3. Wash again.
This should absolutely take all odor away.
What condition the ribbon would be in is questionable - but the odor and all microbes causing it would be gone.
Nature's Miracle is sold by the gallon and smaller qualities many places - PetSmart has a formula specifically for cats.

I just had to buy a new couch for our sunroom because one of our cats decided it was better than a litter box. I tried EVERYTHING to get it out- Urine Off, vinegar, etc. Cat pee is indestructible.
Be sure to take your cat to the vet, though. There wasn't anything physically wrong with ours (just mentally), but if your cat has always used the litter box and you haven't changed anything- like the type of litter you use or gotten a new cat, chances are he/she is peeing everywhere to tell you something is wrong.

First, take poor kitty to the vet. There is something wrong him/her.
Above is what I was going to suggest. You CAN get the smell out when you use a pet stain cleaner with enzymes in it. The enzymes kill the harsh stench of pet urine. Nature's Miracle enzyme Pet stain remover is only one of those. I don't have the other brand names, but any Pet store like Pet Smart, PetCo would have this stuff. There are some at Walmart in the Cat section too.
Also, your Vet can probably point you to the best product as well.
I see the popular advice here is to throw it out.
I say only throw it out if the enzyme product doesn't work. What might happen is that the enzyme solution may remove the odor from some of the ribbon materials and not others, or it might remove the odor from all of it.
With THAT much ribbon, my opinion is that it is worth the money to try this.
HTH

Ditto on the Nature's Miracle. If your pet store doesn't carry it, they will probably carry something called "Petastic." It's the same as Nature's Miracle, and it will take out the odor without discoloring the ribbon. It costs about $10 per quart, but it's worth the expense.
Natures Miracle workes well, as does the Febreeze for Pet Odors. I'd use those on most anything--but I'm not sure whether I'd use the ribbon or not. One problem is that once you smell that cat urine odor, you'll tend to smell that on lots of things where it ISN'T--at least that's how it was for me! I smelled it everywhere!
Take that kitty to the vet--we had to put ours down last year after multiple UTIs, and surgery to remove a bladder stone. We'd think it would be better after meds, then he'd get it again. Finally, his kidneys were shutting down.
The only way the cat has to tell you that something is wrong is by peeing on something. And one sure sign of the UTI is if they are peeing 'against' something--like backing up to a chair leg, or box, or anything like that to help them relieve the pressure. Watch them use the litter box--straining without results or with little results is a good sign that he has a UTI.

I would toss it all! You can't get that smell out! The previous owners of our house had 3 cats and we had to get rid of ALL the carpeting in the whole house and the WOOD FLOOR (yes, we tried to seal it and everything) in the living room and dining room. Those cats cost us $5,000 and that was 22 years ago! I was never fond of cats, but was less fond of them after that!!! I will never ever forget that smell.....

Sorry, had to!
What a shame about your dilemnna...that really stinks--hope you find a good solution.
Spew!!!! Good thing I didn't have anything actually IN my mouth at the time! ;-)
As for the cat pee smell, get the enzyme treatment stuff from the pet store and just put all the ribbon in a plastic bowl and soak in the stuff. My sweet Ashes (now in heaven thanks to the coyotes) had a UTI and we didn't catch it right away. She had peed all up and down the hall on my carpet right against the where the walls meet the carpet. I spent a LONG time treating the area with the enzyme stuff and finally got it smell free. Took forever. Wish I could have picked the carpet up and put it in the washer! I actually had to inject the stuff with a syringe in order to get it into the pad.

I would definetly toss it. Even if you can't smell it I would be totally grossed out if I knew I got a card with that on it. YUCK! I'm so sorry about all your pretty ribbon though.

OMG Cammie you made ummmm, spew? isnt that the word? (and almost pee myself, but not on ribbon) ok that was bad too...
My older kitty started doing this too, and she had a tumor pressing on her bladder...long story short, we had to put her to sleep, she was 17 yrs old.
Id probably toss the ribbon too myself. Lots of ribbon don't hold up to washing, even if by hand, and then need ironing, etc....and I'm just to lazy to do that. At least ribbon can be found with good sales on!
