Default A lesson for all...

I sent my DH to the store to buy (gasp) yes buy a mother's day card for his mother...yeah, the queen of cards here was too busy to make a Mother's Day card for the dear MIL (BTW she has never sent me a card - I have 2 kids), so I asked him how much it cost to mail it, thinking it's 41 cents because the rates went up ( they didn't yet), no he says it cost 63 cents. It was a bulky card - the card cost $5.00 !!!!! Yikes 5 bucks! I could have had lunch out at that price. Lesson learned - make a card.

Happy Mother's Day All!

Yikes - $5! That is just crazy. My DH bought his mother a card also. Don't want to know what he paid. He has never asked me to make a card and since I always seem to be doing my own mother's card at the last minute I have not offered. Each year I think I say I will get it done early and each year I am doing a last minute card. Maybe next year.

Nice, beautiful bought cards are very spendy! It depends on the manuf. too. $5. isn't bad, it coulda been a whole lot more! If you add in his gas $, that card probly cost over $6. total. That's not really a bad apeasement. ;) Just consider it a given.. and again for her B'day.
I wish my Mom and MIL were still here to make cards for. They both were very appreciative of anything hand-made.
Ya'll have a very happy and blessed Mother's Day!!

How about banging out a few OSW cards in ten minutes and set them aside for your MIL? That's gotta be cheaper than even dollar store cards, seeing as you have the supplies already.

I was glancing at cards at the store tonite, looking for an idea for a graduation card; I saw a really pretty one that had a bookmark in a vellum pocket; I loved it and was considering buying it just to case the idea.....and then I looked at the price! $3.99!!! I decided I could remember it til I got home and wrote it down!!! DH has a bad habit (blame it on good taste!) of buying expensive cards!

I just switched it to Martha yesterday AM. I wouldn't call myself a big fan of hers, although the cake I'm making for DH's birthday tomorrow is one she demo'd on her show 200 years ago. Maybe I'm more of a fan than I think!

BTW, you're a lot nicer to your MIL than I would be! The card you linked was stunning, and if there was some kind of price requirement on bought cards I had to send to others, they'd be getting used cards I found in the trash can at the office. "Oh shoot, all I can find is this Happy Retirement card for Bill; I guess it'll do!"

Parrothead, that is a very lovely card. I really like the coloring.

I don't always hear comments about the cards I make, but at least I enjoyed making them. However, I don't always "feel" like making a card for someone who never appreciates my efforts.

My DH has several times come into my stamp area and found one of my cards and written on it and given it to me! His comment was, "Your cards are better than the ones at the store." At first I was a bit shocked, but I decided to consider it a compliment!

Default For all your non-crafty friends.....

Wish I could remember where I saw a certain rubber stamp to use on the back of your cards. It reads.....

"If you think I made this card
myself because I'm cheap,
then you haven't seen
the price of rubber stamps lately."

I think we have the same MIL! I've given her the only grandchildren she will ever have and I mean nothing to her.

Oh, and Parrothead, My MIL regards homemade cards as elementary, too. She more than happy to raid my cardbox if SHE needs to send a card, but does not appriciate recieving them herself. Guess $5 is to much to spend on her own freinds.

My husband won't let me near the card aisle at stores (especially those like target that have the more embellished cards)- I just like to pick them up and gape at the price.

I'm not spending LESS money by stamping- but I'm certainly saving money on cards. At least this way my money gets spent on cool stuff that makes me happy and I can use in pursuit of my hobby. And as a side effect, I don't have to buy any cards!

JoanB, you would be surprised at what some people choose to be offended by--among other issues, my MIL has been very angry that we sent flowers for her birthday but did not send a separate handwritten card by DH.

I do like some of the Hallmark cards for the original sentiments. I have a friend in a rehab hospital and I'm alternating handmade cards for pretty with those cards--for witty.

Joan, that is so sweet. Remember, no matter what kind of trolls they might be, they must have done something right raising your hubby - at least give them credit for that

I figure that if I got enjoyment out of making the card in the first place, and the recipient doesn't comment on it at all, oh well. However, if I had someone that I knew did not like handmade cards, or thought it insulting that I didn't buy one, I'd make the effort to go shopping for them. (Thank goodness I don't know anyone like that, though )

I just remember a card I made for my grandmother when I was just kind of starting to do this; it was cute but pretty basic and she really didn't say much about it at the time, but my mother has it now. My grandmother kept that card and they found it in her "treasure box" after she died.

My MIL displays the card I made and gave to her. This woman is such a spectacularly talented artist and has a home full of GORGEOUS paintings she has done. I feel so honored that she put my card with her gems. So guess who gets more handmade cards from me!

I have experienced this too. Eventhough my inlaws (mostly) do not make cards--I really like the pretty ones they pick out for me. They can be inspiring. And a demonstration of affection is always good --handmade or not. ;)

My MIL is a kindergarten teacher. I'm not sure if she thinks my handmade cards are elementary or not. I do try to send her the more sophisticated, grown-up looking ones. I mostly use Terrific Tulips or Petal Prints for her stuff. My FIL is a car fanatic and really enjoyed my Loads of Love retirement card I made for him at a stamp-a-stack!
