Thank you, these are great inst.! Have you ever used one? Would the lights shinning through the sheets give adequate light? I wonder what wattage would be needed. TFS. May God bless, Sandi

This really looks like a pretty good idea...I actually made one similar with a box and white paper (directions were floating around here somewhere). My issue is with the lights themselves. I used two regular desk lamps and it just wasn't enough light. I think you really need those high watt lights IMO. I have been arguing with myself for weeks about just buying the whole setup off Ebay for about $60.

i went to bed last night trying to decide if i needed to spend the money to buy one...
i too made one with a box and tissue paper... most of the pix were not that great. i suspect it had to do with the lighting as well.
but i wonder if by the time you buy all these supplies which would be cheaper. because you still need to have a couple lights to go with this.
don't get me wrong... these are GREAT instructions AND i love love love to make things myself. looks like a fairly simple project and a sturdy frame when completed. BUT i am a cheap chick at heart.
You know what I do? I have a really good lamp I bought at Sam's club, I think, and It is above my desk...my desk has a sort of hutch....anyway I just prop up a piece of white paper on my laptop screen then put another piece on the keyboard turn on my lamp and I get some pretty good photos.

Were evolution true, Mothers would have more than 2 hands!
I also tried making a photobox, but think I had a problem with the lights as well. I bought 2 Ott lights I got on sale. I put them on either side of the card. Under the card and behind it sits white bristol board. It seems to work pretty good. I know I could do better, if I had more white on the sides, but I am not sending my stuff into magazines or a blog; my pics don't have to be spectacular. Just clear so everyone on SCS can see them!
I've been researching the light boxes today before I even found this thread I found a really good site for more than one way to make the box...It seems that sheer material/fabric works better from the pictures I have veiwed myself. The tracing paper looked just as good too actually.
Thanks for posting these. I definitely want to try to make one...but in my case, it has to be something that I can fold or collapse ~ we live in a trailer

The pvc light box can be taken apart It's in one of the links I think...It's made from Water Tubing and even though they say you need glue most people seem to prefer not adhering because lack of space and easy to carry with you if you need too. It is what I'll be doing...also I've ben reading that using high wattage florescents are better for lighting because they are cooler. The halogens are just as good but get very hot and being so close to the white cloth can cause it to burn.
LIght boxes with own carry case and the pockets for holding all the lights are available at Walmart in the Photo department for around $50.00..
Porter's camera sells the exact same setup for around $80.00. I have this one.
I used mine to take the images in my gallery ( all except 3--lunch pail tin-horses, military dalhia and Ready Mail Go) the 3 mentioned in () were taken by setting them in front of a white collapsible box(you know the kind you get at Christmas for gift wrapping) and using two Ott lights for illumination.
It is hard to tell the difference in the images.
Time is valuable also and the construction time for the PCV frame plus the storage of same is a good reason to spend the bucks and buy the ready to go ones....plus they have the correct lights.

My husband made one for me early last week. I guess he did listen when I mentioned wanting a light box. He did a Google search and found the above directions. He did wind up gluing the PVC as it was a little unstable. I will take a picture of my light box later and post on my blog.
Hi
I have been researching this stuff too. I have seen instructions on making one out of a cardboard box as well....I can't find that link right now. And another for making one from foam board... http://www.studiolighting.net/homema...t-photography/
since like several of you already mentioned, it seemed worth it to me after buying the supplies to build my own then buy lights.
I paid #34.95 for the kit and $14.95 for shipping. I looked up their feedback and several others have been happy with this particular kit. I really can't justify spending more than 50 bucks, at this point, to take pictures of my cards. After all, I just spent $650 a few weeks ago on a new camera! LOL!
We bought a light tent off ebay. It said it retails for $100---we paid $36 and that included shipping. It is mainly for my husband, who is less than thrilled with it. I know I wouldn't pay $100 for it! I uploaded some scrapbook layouts on scrapbook.com that I think look just fine without the light tent. My husband needs it because he makes pens which have a very smooth and shiny exterior so they tend to get shine lines in the pictures he takes and he thinks it ruins them. I tease him because I tell him that it's a little rediculous that he has to master another hobby just to show off his main hobby.
