I make tags/labels quite a bit because my hubby is retired, but has lots of stuff at home that he still works on.
My first thought would be to make sure that the content part of your tag is very visible and readable, at a glance, like you said. For this type of thing I like to use my printer and a simple font. I enlarge it really big and usually "bold" it.
You could do this on white cardstock, and then add something cute and appealing on the end by stamping and coloring in bright colors.
