Default New Fiscars Cutter Issues... Help me!!

I had the old Fiskars Rotary Cutter and I loved it. But I was in Costco last month and I seen the new cutter witht he handle and all the marks for different paper sizes and I started drooling. Well my husband handed me a tissue to wipe my mouth and put the cutter in the cart. I got home and was ready to cut cardstock for a class I was having the next day. The cutting bar locks into the base.... I guess for when you are carrying it. But it also locks everytime you cut a piece of cardstock. Am I doing something wrong?? Is there a way to unlock it perminantly. Right now when I try to use it I have to either try to slide the cardstock under the cutting bar..... or I have to flip it over and unlock the handle. It drives me nuts. And because it is driving me nuts it is sitting on my table holding papers while I use my old cutter. Please tell me there is something simple I can do that I am just over looking.

I haven't seen that one but I purchased a similar version of that one from Michaels, so excited about the rotary cutter part. Well that one also locked into place to cut and was extremely annoying...I returned it and am keeping my swing arm cutter with the blade.
I did purchase this rotaty cutter from Michaels and that one is wonderful and does not lock into place when you cut. I use it for sheet cutting and use my smaller blade cutter for smaller cuts.

That is the old one that I have and I love it. But the new one I though I could hang by the handle and it would free up some space. Plus when we moved my two clear cases that hold extra blades craked off. ANd I thought it would be nice to have two cutters availabel during my PMS night get togethers. I am dying to use the new cutter without all the aggrivation. I am so close to having my husband take some cutters and fix this thing so it won't ever lock.

I don't have this cutter, but I'd give Fiskar's a call!

Good Luck.

Fiskars has a lifetime warranty and quick customer service response. I have e-mailed them from their web site and had excellent service. You may want to give that a try.

I just e mailed them. Thanks for all of the advice. I will let you all know what I find out. And if I can work this kink out and anyone is interested, the cutter was an amazing $29.99 at costco.

I also bought a similar cutter and was having the same problem. I called them and they said they realized this is a problem but the more you use it, the better it will get. I just had my husband lightly sand the little tab that locked it into place. It's works wonderfully now.

I have a Fiskars Rotary cutter that I have only used once for that exact reason!

It cuts like a dream but I CANNOT get that thing open! After I broke 2 fingernails, I threw it in the back of the closet and went back to my personal trimmer.

I have this one too. The little plastic thingies that make it "lock" break off very easily. My friend accidentally broke the first one off & I ended up breaking the other one not too long ago. I've noticed without them, you have to be a bit more careful about making sure the arm is down all the way before cutting or you get a funky cut. It still works great for cutting massive amounts of CS. Well worth the costco price, IMO.

I bought the older style of this model several years ago (at Costco) because a rotary cutter is much more accurate - it doesn't push the paper the way swing arm cutters do.
I got the new one about a half year ago @ Costco, and absolutely LOVE it.
The rulers are MUCH more accurate I don't need to measure and mark my paper anymore!

The first week or so I was annoyed that it locked up, but I learned to hold the right side down with my right hand and pull the bar up with my left hand, and it pops out.

As padawala mentioned it gets easier to unlock with time.

I have a scoring blade in my older style cutter, so I just go back & forth between the 2 when making cards.

My SIL was very concerned about the noise it makes, as she does crafting VERY late (or early depending on your view)
She'll get up @ 3 am and be making cards! She was afraid of waking up the family.

I have this one. I know what you mean. I like to work quietly late at night, and this one goes KER-THUNK every time you use it.

I've put up with it.

My markings must also be an iota off, because when I cut and then go to fold, the ends refuse to line up. So I'm not "squared" somehow. But it's too much trouble for me to worry about, so everyone gets slightly crooked cards.

I'm not convinced that the perfect cutter is out there without spending way more than I'm willing to. This one is "good enough."
