Default One layer cards?

I'm wanting to make some cards to send to friends in Africa, and would like the cards to travel as easily as possible. I seem to recall seeing something once that showed how to make a one-layer card that looked like it had more than one layer. It was like there were multiple mattes that I think were maybe done using a masking technique??

Does anyone know how this is done? Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but I have this card saved in My favorites.

I think that it was masked off with post-it notes. But not positive.
Hope this helps.

here is a link to a challenge in the gallery that was for one-layered cards.

most are done with masking--just cover parts and color the others, I think there are directions here under Resources

Some of the cards have directions included on them, too
