Susan, I'll let you in on a little secret. I just bought a pair of large scallop-edged scissors because I can't find a border punch with large scallops, and that corner rounder scalloping technique doesn't turn out quite right for me.;) I still use my scalloped and pinking scissors, and sometimes the wavy-edged ones.
Slide Mounts....ha..you know it's bad when you can't get rid of them at a yard sale for 25 cents!!!! I donated 'em!!!!!
I know I'm gonna get it for this but.....embossing powder...yikes!!! Haven't embossed in probably 5 years...just don't like it anymore! I remember how AMAZED I was the first time I saw this...had nearly 30 colors of powder!!!
Wire, quilling, and I have always hated "card candy".
I hate card candy too!!!! I was in a swap and ended up with 6 bags of card candy b/c I subbed for flakers in other rounds....haven't used a single one!

I never understood altered books. Wonder if anyone made one. What do you do with it after you spend hours making it?
I make handmade books (blank ones for keeping notes, printed ones for Christmas presents), and I totally hear you. I tried to make an altered book, once, and threw it in the trash.
These are, I think, works of artistic self-expression, not really intended to be "useful" except as art objects. I'm too practical to get into art for art's sake, though.

I think they make sense if used as a memento book of sorts - perhaps a gift to a friend than includes pic's and ephemera of things done together, or a travel journal of sorts - that sort of thing.
Card candy is...embellishments ready to go...3-D flowers or something that has already been put together so all you have to do is add it to your card. The ones you find in the store would be on the sticker isle...but easy to make your own with punches and die cuts. You might find a cheerling outfit or flowers with gems already attached. This is card candy.
Altered books are books that have been altered with paint, dp, cs, stamps, die cuts...those sort of things. You can add pics or journalling. I've used magazine pages and painted over a bit to highlight just the area I wanted. Most of them are made for artistic impression. I've only made one...for a sort of living journal. I've been working on it for years...lol. I don't think I'll ever make another...even if I ever finish this one.
The one thing that no one mentioned, probably because we've forgotten the trend, is BOTTLECAPS!! Never DID see the beauty in those things! And I HAD to buy that mulberry paper first thing..........which is still in its original plastic. The only thing OLD that I still use is brads, and I'm still stuck with all those old "brads"(?) that you had to pound in using a hammer. POUND IN WITH A SPECIAL TINY HAMMER.......arghhh
In Hawaii 'fun fur' is used to crochet gorgeous gift leis that last forever. I missed the papercrafting part of it. LOL
this thread is cracking me up! I needed a smile today.

I have really enjoyed reading everyone's comments (I especially loved the "gut-shot" animal eyelets! roflol).
I am just SO not trendy. As some have said, if I like it, I like it and use it. There are things I regret feeling COMPELLED to purchase - like all that wire and the jig-thing (I have problems with half-inch grosgrain ribbon doing what I want it to, what made me think I could get wire to behave??!!??). And there are things I bought that have seen very little use...
But I have to be philosophical. Everything that I tried (and sometimes failed at), helped me develop my papercrafting talent! The first card I tried (I was SO naive and enthusiastic) was so awful, and took so long to make, that I wouldn't have given it to the neighbor's DOG on its birthday! But I tried things, kept some, discarded others and developed my own particular style. I love seeing everyone's cards, even though some are not what I'd do...
As to outdated scrapbook pages...please, before you alter! My mother made a baby book for me (not scrapbooking, as that was unknown in the MIDDLE AGES...lol) but she embellished a store-bought one for me. It is SO Fifties, and a lot of people would think it hilarious...but it is precious to me beyond price. Those early scrapbook pages may seem amateurish or silly now, because you've evolved and developed your talent...but they show your early efforts, your obvious excitement in the craft...someday THOSE "outdated" pages will be priceless beyond measure to someone...
One man's (or woman's) trash is another's treasure! ;)

I recently came across some "magic mesh" in soft subtles from SU...loved it for maybe 2 cards, but obviously not too muchj since I still own it years after it retired!
I never saw animal eyelets that were "shot" in their poor little bellies...but I can't imagine using them without laughing!~ I found it funny that someone said her hubby liked it for his hunting scrapbook pages...LOL!!
...and I never saw bottle caps...thank goodness! that makes no sense to me!
staples on projects confuse me too...did the adhesive not work? ;)
I still have some old mulberry paper...kinda like it, but I am at a loss of what to do with it. I just like its texture.
I think I will always like hand-torn edges (I never bought a tearing edge...I like the random torn look!) ...they are so forgiving when I cut or stamp something crooked...

remember that technique where you placed a round photo on the page and cut another photo in a spiral and placed it on top of that. to see the picture on the bottom, you simply lifted the center of the top circle.
I never understood altered books. Wonder if anyone made one. What do you do with it after you spend hours making it?
Do you mean things like altered composition books, journals, etc? I LOVE them, and my daughters do, too. They love to receive a journal/book altered especially for them. And the teenagers love to get the altered comp books for using them at school. I altered a Target journal for a friend who got a lot of comfort from journaling (she had been a victim of a violent crime and was now dying of cancer). She has since passed away. Her daughter cherishes that journal, as it was made especially for her mother and with her mom's initials, and her irreplaceable journaling. You can see the album here: Notebook for my Friend by durhamzoo at Splitcoaststampers
One of mine is cutting out the photo around the main focus. I've seen many scrapbooks with cut-out photos and find it sad to lose the context.
Another one is curly writing in a spiral that you have to run the book over and over to read the journaling. No patience for reading it, let alone writing it

Cropping photos with templates - diamond, heart -bleecch! White backgrounds. Bad doodling.
I'm with you... I have tons of templates and stencils. I keep them in a couple of notebooks just incase I MIGHT use them someday. That was the way, before cricut and diecuts!!!

I've been stamping and creating cards for about 14 years. I can't just buy one of something I have to have a LOT of them in different colors. I have accumulated a lot of stuff. Fibers!! I have so many of them I could just about start my own store. How about those Style Stones put out by ClearSnap? They were something you could either leave plain or color. I had to have a lot of them but have only used one or two. I also had to have another product by ClearSnap-the Stamp Press. I have used it once. Google it if you don't know what it is. Ribbons and punches better not go out of style or I am going to have a lot of things to get rid of. I tend to hold onto things forever. Trying to purge things right now.

I'm lucky, my hubby lets me buy all the stamps
and accessories I can hide.
I started scrapping about 10 years ago. It seems that stickers and deco scissors were the only thing we had to use (at least in my neck of the woods). I remember experimenting with different things - going to stores just looking for something that would work. I ended up in the kids craft section most of the time. The one thing I remember buying (maybe using) was Crayola Markers with the heads of them in various shapes (i.e. stars, diamonds). I haven't looked back at my earlier pages to see how much I did in fact use them. All I know is that they are long gone from my scrapping room.
The other thing I remember is using templates such as the shape of a heart where your finished page would be in the shape of a star with various pictures (not sure if I'm describing that well or not).
I still do like some of the stickers such as those that come with SU Simply Scrappin packages. But any of the stickers with white borders, no thanks.
And finally ....... we recently had a challenge at our LSS to make a page with all sorts of our old stuff ...... nothing new allowed. My page came together quite quickly with old SEI paper, ribbon, rub ons, and buttons. My only problem ........ I can't find a picture to fit with it.
This thread has been SO much fun to read! :p I'm having trouble even imagining how to use 1) bottle caps 2) slide mounts. Anyone have any examples they're willing to share? ;)
This has been a hilarious discussion. I really like staples, and I'm afraid I've used most of the mentioned items, but I tend to get tired of anything I've bought a lot of LOL!
This thread is a B:ST to read!!
Paperkins - isn't that what those little paper dolls were called? I had TONS - most of which I sold at a garage sale a couple years ago. I even used to make my own outfits, if I couldn't find what I needed.
I still use a couple of my decorative scissors on cards and still use my QuicKutz, with my Cuttlebug. I am probably in the minority, as I do not yet own a Cricut - I'm waiting for them to invent something that doesn't require you to keep spending $$$ on cartridges, cuts anything I can type or scan in to the computer, can hold an SD card and emboss. They're getting closer, but every time I finally save up enough to buy my "heart's desire", they come out with something better, LOL!
What a relief to know I'm not the only one with stuff in a drawer or bin that I don't use. About the only thing I don't have is staples. But, I am such a hoarder!!! I love the stuff, buy it and then don't use it!! That is so irritating..most times I take something out to use it and then I will put it back (hoard!!) and use something else. Arghh!! My glue sticks dried up. The things fell apart after about a year. I still have mulberry paper (who had the good idea for using it??). Eyelets--I have gobs and usually never use them. I just don't like them like I do brads. I like buttons (hoard them too). Some stickers are lame. I am trying to make myself part with some of this stuff I love to hoard and Use It!!
Don't use the templates and stencils, fibers, slide mounts, decorative scissors (except for the scallop, zigzag, & 1 or 2 more. Altered books I never got into either. I remember watching I think it was Tim Holtz on Carol Duval's show making the altered books. I guess it is kind of like genealogy~~some people will really get into it and some people won't. It is kind of disgusting how much "stuff" I didn't use :P

Reason: misspelled word
By Altered Books, I think we are referring to hardcover books with bunches of pages glued/podged together, some with groups of pages cut into frames. Some are meant to have pages turn, others sit upright as a sort of shadow box. I think they are cool when people use them to store shells, travel memories etc. Some are just done for art's sake. They are different than books or journals with decorated covers and dividers meant to be used as a notebook or journal. They are a finished art piece once you are done. Unless you are collaborating with others, some travel all over the world with each person completing a section. Art journals are like that sometimes too.

Since I started back in 1996, I have been through all the phases, although I bypassed a lot of the artsy ones. I was mainly scrapbooking for a long time, then primarily cards for a while and back to doing both now. For all of you who have amassed lots of stickers - even if they aren't the greatest - I uploaded some pages from some books I have been making that use up a lot of stamps. They are little 6x6 scrapbooks and I have made them for my granddaughter, my grandson and several family friends. The software I used to colorize the photos is called Color Studio Magic Splash from the Internet. In any case, I still love stickers - you just have to be careful how you use them and I admit I don't use them on cards very often - probably never!
