I have a couple that I am close friends with that just found out their dog has lymphoma and will only be around another 2 weeks to 2 months. It makes me very sad as they used live right next door and their dog and ours looked ALOT alike and played together - even had doggie sleepovers when they went out of town.
I want to prepare a card with a nice sentiment but I'm having challenges finding the right words. Any suggestions out there that you would be willing to share?
Thanks so much.

I feel your friends pain having lost my kitty of over fourteen years to cancer. If your friends treat their dog like part of the family than they will feel its loss as a member of the family not as just losing an animal. If this is the case, than anything you would write as if they lost a human member of the family is totally appropriate in my book. Some of my friends who didn't have animals couldn't quite understand the pain I was feeling but those that where close to their animals truely knew it. It felt so good to be supported by these pet loving friends. I bet your friends will so appreciate your support no matter what sentiment you use.
I agree. I think you could use Thinking Of You or just a nice card with no sentiment on the outside and a personal note on the inside. If you talk about how you remember their dog and special things he/she did or a funny story that will make them feel a little better.

Here is a sentiment from a 'store bought' card my daughter received recently:
In the loss of your pet
“A pet is
a special part
of your family
who will
always have a
special place
in your
heart”
They are gone
from our sight…
but not our memory,
gone from our hearing…
but never our hearts,
gone from our touch…
but their presence is felt,
and the love that they gave us
never departs
My favorite for friends is a poem called Rainbow Bridge:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Losing a pet Is never easy . . . Please know that Others understand Your sense of loss And are thinking of you.
Pets touch our lives In their own special ways And remain forever In the warmest Corners of our hearts . . . Sending you Thoughts of comfort And wishes that The many special memories You hold in your heart Will help you through This sad time.

And:
He is your friend,
Your partner, your
defender, your dog.
You are his life,
His love, his leader.
He will be yours
faithful and true,
to the last
beat of his heart.
Card front: It's no small thing to lose a special friend...
Inside: Thinking of you at this difficult time and extending heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your pet.
This can be used for any type pet.
The rainbow bridge is my favorite. (See NK Johnson)....I have a Jack Russel Terrior with her own line of "handmade cards." I found a stamp that looks like her, I colored it in her colors, added some embellishments, and typed the rainbow bridge inside the cards. Everyone seems to appreciate the saying, and it puts tears in my eyes everytime a type it, even now. I'm so sorry for the loss of anyone's pet.
I lost my dog of 11 years this past June. To tell you the truth, I am still not over it - I'm sobbing as I type this... He was diabetic - I gave him two insulin injections daily - and he was most definitely a HUGE part of my family, and of my heart. When he died, I received a card from my best friend that was simple, but it meant so much:
"Never was a pet better cared for or loved. So sorry for your loss."
My heart goes out to anyone who has to endure this heartbreak.
It is often heart breaking to make the difficult decision to end the suffering of a furkid. I gave this poem to a friend recently in addition to "The Rainbow Bridge". I thought it might help someone else as well. Get the tissues ready.
Friend to Friend
You're giving me a special gift, so sorrowfully endowed.
And through these last few cherished days, your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing, When your best friend is in pain.
An understanding earthly act, will only be in vain
So looking deep into your eyes, Beyond into your soul.
I see in you the magic that will, Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess, Is why I look to you today.
To do this thing that must be done, for it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you, and chose you as my friend.
And why I've loved you all these years... My partner 'til the end.
Please understand just what this gift, You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost, And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf, For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right, For I believe it too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent, And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you, To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here, Dear Friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog, My pain and struggle done.
And don't dispair my passing, For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart, And memory I'll stay.
I'll be there watching over you, Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run...a young dog once again.
