Default Photoshop Elements question

There are images in the gallery which have the SU copyright/artist information overlayed on the photo image. I use Photoshop Elements but am at the point of only being able to basically edit a scanned image. It seem logical to make another layer (?) but I'm not quite sure what to do next! Can someone post instructions on how to get this text over my image? Thanks!

you can hit the 'T' button for text, and write in your text.. then double click on that layer ( a layer is automatically made for text).
when you double click that layer, a box comes up allowing you to shadow your text, or change it up!

then you flatten image under the layer tool.. and you are good!

also to the right, on the strip containing the layer, right above layer, it allows you to change the opacity of the text, making appear almost see through, giving it a watermark effect.

Thank you Julie! That's easier than I was doing before.

Thanks so much Tasha & Julie! For some reason, Elements is a very difficult program for me to figure out! Julie, the tutorial link you gave is what I needed - a lot of hand-holding & step by step explicit instructions!
