I am confused as to how you place a computer generated font directly on the cardstock. Say for instance I wanted to print on the bottom right corner. How do I know the greeting is going to print where I want it to?...not too close to the edges etc. Do I just have to eyeball it? I have seen several posts talking about a sentiment in a circle shape, but I would like to learn how to place the sentiment in a simple line. Is there a special software to use?
Also, do you place a full sheet of cardstock in and then cut it to size?
I haven't done this in a long time. Depending on what program you use you should be able to select the paper size. Mine has a card template. Then place your text box, pick font ect... When I printed I would use the print preview opt. Again depending on your program you may have to cut the paper then print. The one I used, don't remember what it was called, allowed me to print it on a whole sheet. Like I was making two cards. Clear as mud right.
Also you might want to play around with it first. using black ink and plain copy paper. Learned that the hard way.
I've attached a template for Word for an 8 1/2 x 11" sheet of paper. Make sure that you do a "save as" so you can always use the original tempalte.
Feed the 1/2 sheet into the printer as you would a full sheet of paper
Print following the instructions on the template
I use an HP ink and it works just fine for me
Note that I created the template using a table and I put in the borders so you could see the size of the table. When I use it for myself I don't have the table borders turned on.
If I have text on the inside and the outside, I always print the cover first and then follow my instructions.
If you print more text than the size that I have for the table you will run off the page.
Thank you all for your suggestions and links and templates! I have been trying to figure them out, but I am just not getting it. I will have my daughter look at your posts tomorrow and hopefully she can figure it out.
We have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002. It has Microsoft Word Processor not Microsoft Word. I don't know if there is a difference. We also have Microsoft Works Task Launcher and it has the letter and labels section which has a list of label and card templates by Avery.
I went to the Avery site to see if they had any templates and they do. I tried using the postcard template which will work for a landscape card. I didn't see anything for a portrait card.
Stamphappy~I will have my daughter help me with your template tomorrow. I tried to print a text and it didn't work.
I print the sentiment and punch it out with my word window punch (or oval, etc) and attach the sentiment that way. I don't have the greatest printer and the template stuff confuzles me sometimes! LOL!

Teresa, I don't know Microsoft WORKS Word Processor but I do know that Works doesn't have a lot the functionality of Word. The template is just a Word table and when I said print text, you just need to print the document. If you can open the template and see what is printed on the page, you should be able to print it. If it prints, more than likely you can edit the text. Sorry, I didn't realize you had Works.
I went out to Microsoft and they have templates for cards that might work for you. See the link below:

This is the best tip my demo ever gave me - print your sentiment on regular paper - use removable adhesive (I use Dotto) to attach the CS u want to print on - you can check position by holding original sheet & CS up to a light. When u see it's in the right place, put the original paper with CS attached into the paper feeder (make sure it is the right way up), then print again and Voila! Easy peasy - I use it ALL the time even when doing a VSN challenge - it is very quick to do
I use the heck out of word, but I also find that Printshop is pretty helpful as well. I bought the $10 edition at walmart. It also has card templates, but I just usually use the blank sheet template and textboxes.
I do mine super easy in an old version of MS Publisher. Open up a blank card template depending on your orientation. side fold or top fold. The newer version of Publisher works well also but not as quick and easy as the older one. A blank template has four pages, this will give you four card front or two cards. For two cards your text goes on page one and three. Do a sample first on blank computer paper. I do a ton on the computer for my cards, my handwritting is terrible, the computer is my best friend!

That's exactly what I do all the time. It's completely fool-proof.
I am not sure if this will add anything, but I will reply anyway!
I am absolutely not a computer savvy person, but this works for me. I have Microsoft Works - it is what came on the computer. I do not feel I use enough to justify purchasing a different program.
I have a file for sentiments - mostly for the inside of cards, but it also works for the front - I just do not do that much. I print 2 at a time, using a whole sheet of cs which I then cut in half after printing.
When I first started, I did practice runs on scratch paper.
In my file I have some pages containing all my birthday, get well, etc. verses.
I also have my own templates, for portrait (open at the top and open at the side) and the same for landscape. I just copy and paste with new verses. In format, I select 2 columns. I usually have about .7 for both the right and left margins of the main page. I then use 1.4 for the space between the columns. That will make the two sides of the folded card equal. I can adjust fonts, color, size - whatever fits. (This is much easier to do than to explain LOL!)
Aside form my poor handwriting, I love using the computer because of all the options with fonts. Fancy, elegant, whimsical, distressed the list goes on and on. Your text can match whatever your card design.
Thank you to everyone for all of your help! I hope to try these suggestions tomorrow. I am not computer savvy either~what should be easy sounds very complicated~but I will certainly give it a try!
