This is too cool! I had seen one of these posted either here on SCS or from one of my e-mail groups and thought they were sooo cute. Saved the picture into my "to-be-CASEd-later" file and now just happened to run across this thread! Woohoo!!! All these great ideas are making me want to go home and stamp (shhh, don't tell the boss what I'm doing instead of working right now!)
Anyway, I would also like to hear some more ideas about what to put inside. Loved the lottery ticket idea since that is one of the things we always give with birthday cards in my family. I'm thinking you could also put a small gift in it - any kind of jewelry, small make-up items for teen-aged girls, small embellishments for stampers/crafters, etc. Help me out here ladies!!
happy stampin'

On new years every year my favorite grandma used to have small scale gifts ( little somethings that are of specific use to each individual) sitting at everyone seat that were just the perfect thing for each person. They were so much fun. These little cups gave me the idea to do the same thing for my family this year.
Some ideas I've come up with... (and with trying to keep all the cans the same size)
-postage stamps
-laundry money...quarters, for those away at college
-small nail polishes for the younger girls
-block buster gift certificates, or any for that matter rolled up should fit
-lip gloss, the round ones
-tags ( small precut ones) or emellishments: eyelets, charms, buttons etc. for scrappers and stampers...
-those metal brain teaser type things, have one person in mind for that
-nylons...wondering if they will fit in the can or not !!
Still have others I need ideas for...still thinking...
I have used these for the "Book to Look" game and I put gift certificates in there for their booking gift to be ordered at their workshop.
They love the little cans and it adds to the intrige that they can't peak inside. I bring my can opener because they want to "recycle" their gift can.
Someone here asked about the Cambell soup cans. The bottom of the cans are round and the can opener won't open it. However, you can use the can opener on the top even though it is a pull tab.
I use the can opener from Pampered Chef. I went to a PC party last Tuesday and gave one of these cans to the consultant for her gift display. She loved it and hadn't thought about doing something like this.
After I received one of these cans from a sideline, I ran over to Sam's Club to buy the fruit cups. I showed all the demo ladies at Sam's Club the little gift idea. They just loved it.
At stamp camp this weekend, I will be giving my girls that wear pink one of these cute cans. I used the Pretty in Pink Craft pad and the Swirling Stars Jumbo wheel to make the wrapper. Then used the matching stamp set, Happiest of Holidays, for a tag. I used silver cord and light pink narrow organdy for the tie. I wheeled labels to wrap around the Hershey Nuggets for inside. They're going to love them!

~I now get my daily requirement of fruit due to this project! LOL~
OK.....I was totally not going to read this thread either, but now oh my goodness!!! A safety can opener and Del Monte fruit cups are on my list!!!!!!! I am shocked and amazed at the things we can make!!!! THANK-YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!
I am with some of you, I wasn't opening this topic either, because I know NOTHING about plumbing!! Too funny! This is just the coolest idea! I do have a ? though. I have the PC can opener, but if you just press it back in place, won't it come off and the stuff fall out? Someone had mentioned that you didn't need to seal it w/ crystal effects.

You do need to seal it with the Crystal Effects. I tried it without and it doesn't work. Maybe if you use the other can opener that some are talking about you don't have to but, with the PC one you do.

I couldn't find a safety can opener at Wally world or Kmart so I went looking online. I did a google search and found them for $19.95 in several places (can't remember where right now.) I was just wondering how much the safety can opener is from PC and Tupperware. Does anyone know?
I have so many ideas for these cans just swimming in my head and I have GOT to get one of these can openers!!

Thanks for the info Gayle! I was thinking it would have to be sealed. I love the can opener I have from Pampered Chef (PC)! I have had it since it came out and it is wonderful!!

Your Welcome! I love it too! I have problems with my wrists and this can opener is so kind to them. I love the smooth action instead of choppy like the old kind that cuts the lids.

. . . but plumbing and pull top cans is even better.
My sister has a case of pudding snack-packs, but the bottom is rounded. I used the safety can opener around the top and will try resealing it with CE. When the recipient opens the can by the pull tab, the stress will be at the top where I've resealed it, so I want to be sure the CE has a chance to reach maximum strength (I don't want the whole lid to come off at the joint). Anyone have a suggestion on how long to wait after applying CE?
Another idea for the list--keep the original label on the can, tuck in message and goodie, reseal, pack in lunch. . .

Linens & Things has them online, so I'm sure they'd have them in their store too. I don't have one close to me, though. I have heard several others have found them at WalMart. I did not however.
Good luck and you guys who are lucky enough to have one of these can openers...would you please post pics of the cans you've decorated?!
PLEASE, PLEASE! Maybe it will help me contain myself until I can get one of those nifty safety can openers

I was really confused, at first
My first thought was that you were talking about the plastic cups that fruit now comes in mostly. I was wondering what was the point of cutting out the bottom and the re-gluing it back on and how it would look to use wood, instead.
Now, after seeing the sample, I'm really jazzed and can't wait to get to the store and buy some! My kids' fruit intake is about to double!
For anyone who's done this successfully, is there a trick to re-mounting the bottom of the can? I tried this today, and somehow the can ends up smaller than the bottom - not by much, but enough to see a little edge. Or does it not really matter because "nobody will notice"?

What do you mean by smaller and seeing a little edge? I did 7 of these last night and you can see the bottom rim and tell its a can, but there's no indication that the bottom has been cut off.
I used crazy glue to put my bottoms back on after filling them with the makeup I bought. I shook them this morning and all are holding well. I'm using actual fruit cans (the smallest available on the shelf not in packs of 4) instead of the fruit cups because I wanted a little more in them. They still have the pull tops, aren't as big as the huge ones, and are just bigger enough that I could get 4 little make up things inside and still have them rattle. And the dimensions for these cans are simple. I get 3 cans with one sheet of CS.
I'll try to explain what I mean.... When I try to match the can with the bottom on one side, leaving just the rim to show, as I work my way around, by the time I get to the opposite side, I have more than just the rim showing. It's as if the circumference of the can is now less than that of the bottom that I've cut off. KWIM?
sounds like the can opener is having issues. I get a perfect cut and you can't tell the difference and cen even change the bottoms from one can to the next. I got a "Good Chef" brand at Harris Teeter, but I know it's a common brand.
I've been using a can opener by StarFrit... Not only can I not switch between cans, but as I rotate the bottom, I can often find a better match in some places than others.... I guess I'll have to go on a shopping expedition today LOL
Well, I finally found the safety can opener at WalMart for $8. I had been looking in the electric can opener aisle and realized that they were in the aisle with the hand utensils.
I just posted my first can. I can't wait to do another! Please post your pics for more inspiration!

While at WalMart, I bought several fruit cans and a Pringles can. I'm going to try cutting off the bottom of the pringles can and use that too! (Got that idea from SUSisters.)
Thanks!!

For an idea to place inside: one of the newest things i have seen on SCS is the handstamped Christmas Ornaments. If you had a small ornament it might fit into a larger fruit can, you would just have to put a little padding on the top and bottom to prevent it from cracking, but how neat would that be? you think you get fruit and you get a beautiful ornament. Plus then you dont have t worry about it breaking in a normal box.
Thanks for the great idea. I have to admit the first time i saw it, i did not even open it as i though "nah, i will never do anyting with plumbing parts". I guess i was right since that did not work. Now i have one more project to do, like everone else, i guess!
That's a great idea to put an ornament in the can. Just make sure their is enough room between the lid & the ornament. You don't want to break the ornament when you pop the top!

Hey Kymber, have you posted yours that you made yet?
Debbie
No, I'll try this week. Have to take the disk to WalMart to get it downloaded so I can post. 3-D items don't scan well. BTW ~ they went over great at the party!!!!
