I know the deal at Viking is an awesome one but do I really need that many colors? I bought a set of 24 colors at JoAnnes yesterday with a 50% off coupon, but I'm hesitant to open them because I'm afraid I will wish I got all the colors! Any opinions welcome.

I was required to buy a 36 pack of Prismacolors for my architetural classes umpteen dozen years ago. I can honestly say that I never needed anymore than that, even with all the colouring I did in classes. They blend together very easily so you can acheive any shade or tint you require. It's just a matter of practice.
I don't know if you need 120 colors.
I went back and forth between getting them and I just don't use my set of 24 that I have enough to justify the price even if it is an excellent deal.
Someone tole me that if you have to ask then you probably don't need them.
I was going to ask the same thing. I see that Viking has the 48 color set, I might just get that with the $20 off. I can't see using 120 colors...even with the $20 off it still comes to $70+ and the 48 colors would only be around $25.
On the Viking deal just substitute the first 3 letters with BLN and you will get the extra discount to $56. then with the $20 coupon it comes to the $40 with tax. It is a great bargin. I paid that amount for my set of 48. I am not experienced enough to know how to blend them to get the extra colors, it never fails that I end up still looking in my 48 for a color I cannot find.
WOW!, DARN!, Now I want the 120 colors. I would have been happy with 48. But how big of a box do the 120 come in? Are they in a tin like the Dewent pencils? If it's too big then I'll have storage issues.
Viking is out of stock of the 120 count pencils. :( I wonder if I put them in my cart and they go on back order how long before they get them in. The 48 count come up at 22.98.
You ask do I need the 120 colors? I don't even ask! Of course, I need them all. There is rarely a time when I don't feel like I need every marker or colored pencil I come across. Do I use them all? Probably not but I HAVE them.
Don't let me loose in an office supply store

I have had the 48 set for years and think that amount is enough. They blend so nice. You can make further colors by mixing/ blending. I don't think you'd want more colors than that.
Okay Girls, now you have peeked my curiousity. I have been wanting this set it seems forever. Can you please share the code so I get the absolute minimum price for them plus is there a discount code as well? Share please!

I just tried to order the 120 pencil set from Viking and it says Low Availability. So I tried to add (1) to my cart and it said it was out of stock. Just thought I would let everyone know. If anyone else tries to order them and it goes through, please let us know!! Thanks!!
JMO! I have a 120-Prismacolor set, but I had a 72-color set for 15 years. . . Do I find the 120-color set more useful? Not much. I don't know if 24 colors would satisfy my need for variety and choice, but 72 will be quite adequate for most people. :-D
I have the 120 set that I bought awhile back and haven't used it much. I guess I've felt intimidated by them!! Now I think I'm ready to bring them out and try the MCP technique. Do you sharpen them with an electric pencil sharpener? The gals on 2Peas thought that might not be good for the lead inside the pencil. I tried a handheld one and that seemed to eat up too much of the pencil. Would be interested in what everone does about this.
Also, how do you make different colors w/ the colors you have?? Color one color on top of the other? I do have a Prisma blender pencil too, and something that's a little like a blender pen that's supposed to blend wax-based colored pencils like the Prismas.
I guess the reason I haven't dug out the Prismas is that I've been busy with my SU stuff and I now I can't demo them <sigh>.
Just ordered the 120 set. The store they service me from is in Dallas and they are also on B/O, but hey for this price (and I definitely do not want to miss out on this deal) I decided to go for it. I'm going to call them in a bit and see if they can tell me when they are expected.

There is also a rebate on the prismacolor pencils, so don't miss out on the additional savings. the website was posted earlier on where to get the rebate form. sorry I can't help on that, I am not too computer savvy and don't know how to paste that part in.
I just tried to order the 120 set & it does come up as back ordered. I thought I'd order one anyway & just wait but it no longer accepts the BLN#. It keeps going back to the original number & the $97 price. Has anyone been able to get a set on back-order at the special price? It won't even accept the promotion code for $20 off a $50 purchase.
Thanks for all the replies! With the newly discovered rebate I just can't pass up this offer. But as is par for the course I'm a day late and a dollar short! Now Viking doesn't have any left! I'll keep trying though.

I just went to Viking to see if I could order the 120 Prisma color pencils and they are also backordered, but they did show that they have the 48 colors in stock. I was looking for where you would put the codes to get the special prices and didn't see anything. HELP!!! I would love to order these, but I would like to get in on the special deals.

Not only do I only have the 48 count, but-it's the same box I bought over 10 years ago in H.S. I used them through college. (I was a fine arts major). I dug them out a few weeks ago when I needed them for CHristmas cards. They are still perfect. So-that being said...they are worth the investment. But personally I've got a few colors that I've never even used. But if I could get the 120 ct for 40 bucks, I think I would jump on it. Like I said...they last forever.
I used prismacolors for years (and paid full price for them!), but to be honest, they have sat in a closet for almost 10 years now untouched.... Stamping took the front seat, and now the only prismacolor I ever use is white (white on black is georgeous!) Are you talking about the ink pens or the colored pencils?
My personal feeling is that you would rarely use the wide range of colors unless you are constantly using them. 36 should be plenty. With the colored pencils, they blend wonderfully, so I wouldn't bother with any more.
As a final note, they may be nice to use for other things, but I prefer the exact match up of the SU papers, inks, pens, eyelets, etc. and would never use them for cards or scrapbooks because I would have the worry of clashing colors. When I first learned about SU, the matching colors impressed me more than anything else.

Rita,
I like my color to begin strong. I couldn't get the strong color. I pressed and colored over and over and I couldn't get the depth I wanted. Also, I found the tips kept breaking. Too brittle! I never would sharpen them to a point because of it. So, I couldn't color in the fine details.

I am probably the only one that doesn't like my SU watercolor pencils. gave 'em away.
Jan, what didn't you like about your SU! pencils?
Rita~
I don't know about Jan, but it seems like most people whom I know that have issues with the SU watercolor pencils think that they are deficient in NICE greens. . . Who needs mint or green galore for realistic leaves? I have remedied that by either layering two colors, a green and a yellow (and showed my customers how to do that), or I use another brand of WC pencils that I had from college art days to supplement.
Now if SU would get a larger set of WC pencils. . . :-D Of course, they might run into price issues with actually selling them then too. JMO!

I've found just the opposite with my SU watercolor pencils. I like them better than my Derwent ones (did I spell that wrong?). My Derwent ones have hard spots in them that scratch the paper instead of coloring it, but my SU ones are always smooth on the paper and are vibrant. I wish the color range was better though.
You will probably use the same 24 colors most of the time. I've been teaching classes for 5 years using the Prismacolor pencils and we always use the same 12 to 15 colors. Most of my customers (including myself bought the 120 color set) About 75 of those pencils are still brand new. It also makes a little more time consuming to search through all those colors to find the right one. I would strongly advise that you get the 24 or 48 set and just buy individual pencils to add to that set (at about $1.00 ea). You can also download a Prismacolor color chart from their website and right next to the colors that you have color with your pencil. It gives you a visual guide when your're trying to find the right colors and you can also keep track of what you have.
These are the colors we use the most. The ones with the * we've only used a couple to times.
Crimson Lake
Crimson Red
Scarlet Lake *
Dark Green
Olive Green
Limepeel *
Burnt Ocrhe
Dark Brown
Indigo Blue
Copenhagen Blue
Peacock Blue *
Slate Blue *
Terra Cotta
Yellow Ochre
Goldenrod
Sand or Jasmine (some sets do not come with Sand)
Black
White
Cool Gray 50%
Cool Gray 90%
Orange
Peach
Pink
Violet
Lilac *
Canary Yellow
It must depend on where you live.....I just ordered the Prismacolor Set of 120. It took the 20 dollar promo code with no problem and they are supposed to arrive tomorrow. Since we have no Viking Store in my area they must be distrubted by Ofice Max or Office Depot or they will not be here tomorrow. If they actually do arrive tomorrow then I can send in the 25 dollar rebate which brings the total cost to $16.15.

Well, I guess everyone had their "druthers" so the characteristics of one type of wc-pencil will appeal to some and not to others.
Myself, I'm not fanatical about using wc-pencil or markers, I much prefer watercolouring with a paint brush or using oil pastels, but that's how I was taught and that's what I've done for too many years to count.
