Red face Question about electronic submissions

I have decided to start submitting my work to publications (a long shot, but you can't win if you don't play...). Do those of you who submit on-line keep the actual card or project? I was going to give my card away, but then I thought, "What if they accept it and they want me to send them the actual card?"

And...do you submit the same card(s) to multiple publications? If so, what do you do if it gets published? Isn't there a rule about not being published already...what if they were accepted at the same time?

okay..not like these things will happen to me, but I just want to know the ropes before I hang myself.

thanks for all your input.

Okay...first off congrats on deciding to submit!! And you are right...can't win if you don't play...

I'll attack your questions one by one:

Okay...you do need to keep the items that you submit since they will want you to send them in if they are accepted for pub.

You can submit to multiple pubs...but I would suggest doing it in seperate emails. I usually find that you won't have to worry about subbing to more than one mag at a time since calls don't usually happen at the same time (unless you are subbing for a holiday edition). You are right you can't sub a previously published item again. If you have the same project picked up by different mags...first off good for you!! secondly...you can choose which one to give it to...I would take the one that offers the better compensation...

good luck!!

Hold onto the card for awhile. Once I submitted a project electronically to an independant zine where it was published. Six months later, Somerset Magazine was doing a spot on that zine for its Melange section and they wanted the sample to photograph for their magazine...but I didn't have it anymore so I lost out.

Good luck & Have fun!

If you give it away, you'll have nothing to send the publisher if it is accepted.

Keep it somewhere safe, until you receive word on whether or not has been accepted (some magazines never notify you; find out what they're editorial procedures are, so you know what to expect)

I advise against making duplicates of any submission for giving away; while you may annotate on the back that it is intended for publication and must remain confidential, there are no guarantees that the individual that receives it will notice this nor fully understand the importance of such a request . . .

Never submit the same card to multiple publications, particularly if they are publications that compensate (whether it is monetarily, or with complimentary product) for accepted works.

If a publisher is paying you for the piece, they will expect exclusivity because they are buying all rights to the piece, including the piece itself, and the instructions you write up for it, and all diagrams you submit along with it.

In return for the compensation (monetary or otherwise), they will expect:
  • That the piece never have been uploaded, and, depending on the publisher, not uploaded even after it appears in print, without their express consent (like I said, they bought it, they own it; you gave up those rights when you sold it to them)
  • If it has been uploaded, and they still choose to publish it and pay you for it, for you to remove it from the internet, until they grant you permission to display it again, if ever.
  • You to not redistribute the diagrams or instructions to others via any means; as I said, you sold the rights to that when you sold the piece to the publisher.

The aforementioned typically doesn't apply to publishers such as Stampington, which does not compensate artists for designs used.

But, I would advise anyone to research very carefully the policies/restrictions/requirements of each and every publication you intend to submit to; every one of them is different.

Thank you all for the info...it was just as I expected...I guess I will have to pick which pieces I want to submit to what magazine...(And it is so HARD not to post them as I think they are some of my best pieces...but I will resist!)

Happy Stamping All.

I was wondering the same thing, not because I"m thinking of submitting, but because I was just reading the latest Stamp It and so many of our SCS sisters have work in this issue! Julie, Sarah Vrolyk, Lisa Strahl & Lisa Johnson, Jess Witty and Ellen Houston; all great stuff! Sarah and Lisa and Jess each have a coordinating set which is what made me wonder if they sent in the whole set hoping it would get picked up or if it goes in first by a photo; interesting stuff (and lovely work ladies); I'm sure there are others whose "real" names I don't recognize!
So anyway, Best of Luck Colleen! I'll be watching for you!

Thanks...I already had good news today! (an on-line magazine picked up the card I sent...) I am in the process of sending off more to other places.

Here is the site I use to see what publication calls are coming out. It is a bit confusing and more geared to scrapbooking (and I only do a small amout of that) but it is a good place to start. It also lists contests and design team calls too. Here is the site...http://pubcalls.blogspot.com/index.html

Good Luck to all of you and thanks for the support and info.
