I really want this stamp becauses of all the great samples in the gallery, but it seems that you need the craft pads to make nice color on color backgrounds. I can't invest in the craft pads right now, so should I still get this stamp? Convince me, ladies!
So far I've only used it with the regular classic inks and I have no complaints. As a matter of fact I had a workshop yesterday. We used this to make the background for a monogram card. It was a hit. Now I will tell you that to get good coverage I use a brayer to apply the ink. My stampers loved this idea.
I agree with Consuelo, classic ink works just fine, especially when using your rubber brayer. I'm sure craft would give great coverage, but too messy and time consuming for me!!
I've used classic inks a lot with background stamps and they work great. The only thing you have to be sure to do is use a darker shade of ink than your card stock. The craft inks are great for times when you want to use a lighter ink on a dark card stock - it really shows up because the ink is almost opaque. If you don't want to invest in all the craft inks, you could get just the white pad for now - it makes for a really pretty background on some of the darker papers.
I had a hard time w/ coverage on backgrounds until I discovered the brayer! Now I love it! Also, have you heard about "Butt Stamping?" Someone discovered if you sit on your stamp (with the ink towards the paper, please), you get better coverage! Others ink up the stamp, put it inked side UP & lay paper on top of it then press down or use a brayer to roll on it.
Emilymomto3 just answered my question. I use my versa mark pad for a lot of things like this. I don't have that particular stamp though. I love the Versamark for backgrounds.

Classic (dye) or Versamark works great for tone on tone!
If you want a deeply contrasting effect, because you are using 2 equally intense colors, like Pink Passion over Only Orange ;) , then you might resort to Craft inks? Some folks have said they used Classic and achieved satisfactory results, but I went with Craft and was wild over the deeply saturated color.
Granted, Craft is a bit messier to clean up, but usually, if I'm using Craft, I plan on doing more than just one (to make it worth the extra effort, LOL!), and then I blot the stamp with scratch paper, then wipe it with a baby wipe before scrubbing (so my Stampin' Scrub doesn't get all gunked up and I have to clean it, too, UKWIM?).

I own no craft pads and use only the classic inks with this stamp (and I think it turns our great).
If you want to use classic ink as craft ink - use versamark on the stamp first (to keep it cleaner) and then the classic over it - you can then emboss in clear for the craft ink look!!!

Wow! Great suggestions from all of you. I actually do have the white craft pad that I could try. Maybe I should invest in a few more like pink passion (thanks Julie)!
I will also try that clear embossing idea--thanks!

Donna,
This is the second time I've seen this similar hint. Not to sound dumb - but do you go directly from puting on Versmark to putting on classic ink and then stamp your paper? Or do you stamp the versamark on your paper and then stamp the classic over it (trying to line it up)?
Thanks
Melissa
I have done this too -- sparingly. you should know though that SU's recommendation is to stamp on your paper with versamark FIRST, then use the stampamajig to overstamp with your classic ink.
While I don't have the Floral background, I did have the same worries about the Paisley background. I figured I would use it for a while and then decide if I just HAD to invest in more craft pads... but I love it with the classic inks! I don't use a brayer to ink it, so my pads that are well inked work better with it. I do have the white craft pad and I've had it a looooong time without reinking it, but IMO it works great cause it is not as juicy and messy as it was at first, but it still gives good coverage and a nice look. I also agree with those who use the busy backgrounds with Versamark... really adds a lot to a blank layer.
