Default Question for those that have done beaded pens

Do you stamp on cardstock or regular paper for the inside of the pen? Also if you used the tape do the beads ever come off or are they on there really well? It seems like they would come off as the pen is used.

I stamp on thin copy paper. It's easier to curl and place in the pen.

When I put the tape on- I heat the tape with my heat gun (after I remove red film!) roll it in the beads, pressing firmly into the beads. Caution- don't play with the beads (or let your kids) the oil from your fingers gets on them and they don't stick. After I've covered all the tape with beads I heat it again, then roll it between my palms, pressing really hard again, to press the beads into the tape.
Works great the pen I use regularly hasn't lost any beads.

I don't put paper inside of the pen, I use an address label that fits around the barrel of the pen. I stamp the label and then cut it to fit once around the pen and apply to the outside of the pen. Then I put the sticky tape around that and roll it in microbeads.

I make these all the time. I also use address labels on the outside then place the tape over the top. I order the sheets from PennyWise. Then heat it with the gun and roll in the beads. I make sure to roll mine on the table after they are covered. I haven't had any issues with them coming off. Have Fun!

I've used the address labels. I've not heard about the heat gun to the glue sheet and beads. That's a good idea. I'll be sure to try that when I make the pens for my daughter's preschool teacher.

I haven't tried these yet. Which sticky tape do you use? Also, do the SU micro beads work or do you order them from pennywise? Thanks for the info. They sound pretty fun and easy to make.

I use the O'So Sticky Tape sheets from Suzanne at Pennywisearts.com. along with her microbeads. I've never used the SU! beads so I can't address those.

I use the .5mm beads to start with and then roll the pens in .1mm beads to fill in blank spots.

Here are some pens (and note cubes) that I just did.

I use the terrific tacky tape and the micro beads from SU. Works well.

I still have sticker paper from SU (it was 'retired' last year :( ) - that's what I stamp on. I stick in on the OUTSIDE of the pen. I find that anythign on the inside of the barrel really doesn't show through the beads very well.

For adhesive, I've used both the SU Sticky Strip tape (wind it around the pen in a spiral) and the O'So Sticky Sheets that you can by from Pennywise Arts. Both work great. Either way, you do want to heat up the adhesive so that the beads don't fall off - I simply roll in inbetween the palms of my hands after I've rolled the pen in beads. Then I roll it on a hard surface to smoosh the beads down more.

These are beautiful! Great job!

Thank you everyone for sharing the tips! I would have never thought about the address labels, but I'm sure that will make the pens look much better!

I have a Xyron adhesive machine I have never used. Maybe I can use that to make the 'labels'.

Hi,

You can use the Xyron to make the labels, but it is not strong enough to hold the beads...

The reason for heating the tape after putting the beads on is that it will make the beads stick better... Just be sure to roll them on a hard surface/table top to help the beads stick/embed into the tape.

The Bic pens are usually used with the labels and the RSVP are used with the inserted stamped paper. Beads on the outside...

The RSVP pens are also used for putting beads on the inside of the pen barrell....

Have fun and enjoy.

BTW, Suzanne at PennyWiseArts has new sizes of the clear beads....

Ditto what Donna said - the Xyron adhesive won't hold the beads on. You'll need something like the red line/O'So Sticky/Sticky Strip tape.

I've used the Bic pens and wasn't as pleased with the way they looked, although I do have some and use them for giveaways. I use the RSVP to bead on the outside. Pentel also makes a smaller pen that I really like to use, too (beads on the outside of the barrel). Still have not put beads on the INSIDE of the RSVP pens, though! Gotta try that!
