A while back I bought this really cute Monkey Madness stamp set from the dollar stamp store online. I have plans on making some shadow boxes with these stamps for my bathroom (monkey theme) but, I wanted to ask if anyone has ever used real life sand for any card, sb or paper projects. I would really love to add sand to this frame since my bathroom decor has it with the monkeys.
My Question is...
How would I adhear the sand? I want it to look like if the monkey was on the beach. Would I use that red really sticky tape? or glue?
If you have used it in any of your projects can you share a picture with me?
I recall seeing lots of cards made with real sand that were shaker cards. (Especially with the SU set Crab and Co...you could check this one out in the gallery). I don't know how you'd make a shadowbox card with one...you'd have to have it sealed somehow so the sand wouldn't come out. hth!
First, I love the Monkey Madness stamp from Clear Dollar Stamps!
Second, if you use the Red Sticky Tape (you can also buy it in full sheets), it will hold the sand, beads, shells, glitter etc. whatever you might want to stick to it.

Awesome! I thought the red tape might work but wasn't sure. Do you have any cards or anything you have made with that set. I'd love to get some ideas. :o)
What I suggest is you go to Michales and buy this sand spray/paint called Plasti-Kote. You spray it on thiker cardstock and it looks just like sand. Its super cool!
instead of real sand had you thought about using sand paper, you could get it in a different grit to suit your needs best? I have seen the real sand used in shaker boxes. but the double stick sheets would work or a two way glue just depends on the amount you are going to use and how it will be placed in the shadow box. godd luck on your project ;) ~~Bluegirl~~~
I don't have a picture, but I made a beach-y card with sand (the art sand/play sand from Michael's in the kids section) and adhered it with Crystal Effects. Not sure how it fared in the mail, but it looked good when it left my hands!

These 2 ideas are great! I had never used sand because I simply didn't know how to use it. I had anticipated buying that expensive decorative sand in the miniature train section at HL because I thought it would smell nicer than just collecting real sand from the beach.;) I know in the train section, they also have mediums there to adhere the sand for those who create miniature train scenery, I just haven't read up on it. Might be an option for you since you are creating a permanent decoration.
But, the spray on sand sounds like a super alternative, sounds much less messy!

There are tons of examples over in the Clear Dollar Stamps idea gallery:
Two reasons why you should use craft sand (cheap kind from kids' crafts row) and not actual sand from your beach:
1. Beach sand contains living organisms and can get smelly or moldy over time.
2. Beaches are threatened non-renewable ecosystems that needs to be protected.

If you already have some beach sand and wish to sanitize it, spread it out onto a cookie sheet and pop it into a hot oven for a while. I have beach sand in my stash that was *stolen* from Panama City eons ago. ;) I also have builders sand bought from Home Depot.

If you bake it, do you have to put anything like bleach on it to make sure everything yucky is killed? I still stand by "no real sand" but people always ask me about making stuff with their sand from vacations.

Mary Beth, the heat should kill any organisms. I got this tip years ago from the Craft Queen - Carol Duvall. You can sanitize regular ole yard dirt too. ;) If you do, tho, you're killing the good stuff that plants need to grow too.
Pixie, my sand has been in closed containers and still looks like it did when I dumped it in there. The only thing that would probably affect it is if it was still wet when you closed it up - now, that might get gross!
May God bless, Sandi

Mary Beth, I re-read my reply and apologize if I came across a bit snarky. My Panama Beach sand came home with me in 1963. Waaay back when beach sand was snow white and waaay before any of us thought of protecting anything. I'm all for anything we can do to protect our planet. In Fla. they dredge on a regular basis to blow sand back up on the beaches. This process is scary for a 1st time observer. Here's the ship waaay out in the water with these humongeous pipes connected from it going all the way up onto the beach. Hearing the shells fly thru them is unbelieveable. May God bless, Sandi

We saw the dredging in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The beaches of our Eastern Seaboard are diminishing. These dredging ships are off shore but not out in the middle of the ocean. I thought it was quite odd that they don't close the beach when dredging. My kids were all over those huge pipes. They move the pipes to a new area when they get 1 portion of the beach filled w/ new sand. From memory, I'd say they were about 10-12 ft. in dia. Only the portion of the beach where the sand is blowing out is closed.
I'm sorry, Pixie, I didn't purposefully hijack. But thanks for bringing back great memories.
May God bless, Sandi

I use sand for A LOT OF STUFF ... I use Versamarker and draw where ever it is that I want the sand to stick, and then you sprinkle the wet ink with HEAT AND STICK POWDER (You heat this and then you heat it until it is clear, and then you pour the sand over the sticky-powder, you re-heat it and make the sand stick permanently) You can find the Heat and Stick powder on page 187 of the Spring-Summer catalog from SU.
I have tried the sticky tape but I like the H&S powder better because it gives a little more "real" looking varriants! It is AWESOME!!!!
I am going to post some examples over at my blog. Come visit if you wanna see some things I did with it.

I've used Tacky Tape too, but I've also mixed sand w/ Elmer's Glue until it was pliable and then molded it to whatever I wanted. Really cheap to do it this way and you get great dimension. It dries clear but leaves the sand hard. Perfect for a shadow box I'd think. Love the Heat & Stick idea though, that one never occured to me!
