The one I use the most is retired, Alphabet Fun. After that, I would say I use Brushstroke and Alpha Dots the most. I'm going to buy three new sets in the next few months, Headline, Newsprint, and Tidy Alphabet. SU has a lot of good ones this year.
I have and use Classic Alphabet all the time because it's versatile. I think if you are only going to start with one alphabet for scrapping I'd go with on of the smaller double alphas (Classic, Simple Type, Newsprint, All Around, Brushstroke, or Bold) that you like the best. I think those are very versatile and nice to have both caps and lower case. I have Pure and Simple Alpha and just got the Stencil Alpha - it's fab! but I got Classic first - a good all purpose one.
Headline and Letterpress, which I have on my wish list, are great but I think it's good to have a smaller alphabet to go with them.
My 2 cents,
HTH,
Anita
I love Crayon Fun but if I had to choose one that is current, then I would definitely say Newsprint. It is hard to choose between these two, I use both so very often. I love all the Alphabet sets so much. (I just gave all those pages of half-used stickers to DD)
I've got the brushstroke and I'm not as excited about how it looks in scrapping as I thought it would be. Alphadots & the big & narrow letters (don't know the name off hand) are next on my list.

I scrapbook 12x12 and really love BIG titles, so I'm really excited about the Headline and Letterpress alphabets. But if you're only having one set I'd go for something medium-sized and very plain - personally, I wouldn't want my whole album done with a very distinctive alphabet all the way through (unless it was a theme album). Pure and Simple is very nice and plain. I don't like the G much but it would still be my top choice from the current selection.
